  1. Mmmm....... the words cheek tongue in spring to mind
  2. £2 what a rip off ! I bet the locals will only be charged £1.50
  3. Thanks, and thanks for reading it ! I got most of it from a book I mentioned on another post today "A History of the Steelmen 1886-1986" by John Swinburne but the book doesn`t answer your question. From the same period I discovered that Hughie Ferguson who scored the goal for Cardiff City when they beat Arsenal to win the 1927 FA Cup signed for us in 1916 and went onto score 362 goals before his transfer in 1925 for £5,000. Hughie died young in Jan. 1930. Another poster mentioned he was related to a player called Frame , a W. Frame was transferred from Clyde in October 1924 for a fee of £550 with an additional £100 for the player himself. Frame made his debut v Dundee in a 2-1 win and his name appears on teamsheets recorded in the book until November 1926
  4. The mention of Intercontinental Hotel has prompted me to post this as I used to work for them in London. Intercontinental are currently running an incentive scheme for their staff to try and sell bedrooms in Intercontinental Hotels & Holiday Inns worldwide on what is called a friends & family rate which is a few quid less than normal Click here http://www.comeonout.org/ to find out more I`ve no idea who Bill Johnson is but he posted the link up on a messageboard that ex Intercontinental staff use to keep in touch
  5. A History of the Steelmen 1886-1986 by John Swinburne first published in 1985 by the club ref nbrs ISBN 0 9511029 0 7 for the hardback ISBN 0 9511029 1 5 for the paperback printed and bound by M&A Thomson Litho of East Kilbride
  6. It`s probably not a currency that`s kept in stock so will need to be ordered in. If you can go to a Post Office today and order it ( pay at the time of order ) it should be in the Post Office for you by Wednesday. Or you could call a Bureau de Change at Glasgow Airport and ask if they will have it in stock
  7. A few facts and figures relating to questions asked on this thread * 1927 - First overseas tour party to Spain & Portugal consisted of 16 players, 1 trainer, 1 manager and 1 guide. A total of £1,700 plus expenses was guaranteed for the 8 games. Played 8 W6 D1 L1 For 23 Against 10 `Well lost only one tour game to a Bilbao select and won the Barcelona Cup and the King of Spain Cup and beat Real Madrid Scotland as a nation did not play an overseas fixture ( other than Ireland ) until May 1929, a 7-3 victory against Norway in Bergen. Allan Craig of Motherwell won the first of 3 caps that day * By the end of 1927 a South American tour had been negotiated with Mr E Alcarez a London based agent for the sum of £12,800 for 11 games, after expenses there would be a profit of £5k with Mr Alcarez receiving £2k By comparison ( in financial terms ) Motherwell turned down a bid of £6k from Huddersfield for George Stevenson a player who gained his first cap in October 1927 in a team with the likes of Hughie Gallacher & Alan Morton in the era of The Wembley Wizards * Summer 1928 `Well sailed to Argentina for a tour of Argentina, Uraguay & Brazil where 6 of the 11 games were won with 1 draw and 4 lost. The final game was a 5-0 defeat against a Brazilian select in Rio before a 40,000 crowd The 2 cups and 2 shields won on that trip are in the Fir Park trophy room * In 1931 a tour of South Africa from 24th April to 27th July only losing 1 of 15 games. All expenses were paid plus a fee of £500 and the players were given £50 each for kit * In 1933 it was agreed to play 2 matches in Paris on 26th & 28th May 1934 for a fee of £600. Travel costs quoted by Thomas Cook were £16.16 shillings ( £16.80 ) a head * 1934 tour of South Africa & Southern Rhodesia for a fee of £1,200 plus expenses .Playing 16 Winning 16 For 81 against 12 with Willie McFadyen scoring 6 in one 8-0 win Jerseys - in 1928 the change was made to bright amber with claret collars and cuffs Stand - in October 1960 Tubewrights Ltd submitted an estimate of £30k for the steelwork & cladding for the new stand followed in Jan 1961 by an official quote of £32,738. A year later architects estimated it would take an additional £60k to complete the stand In 1962 the board decided to proceed with the new stand at a cost of £80k. Funds were raised by selling St John to Liverpool for £37.5k and Pat Quinn to Blackpool for £34k. John McPhee also joined Blackpool for £10k Many `Well fans showed their displeasure by boycotting the new stand but I would point out that St John had first put in a transfer request in Jan `61 and a bid of £20k from Norwich was turned down in May of that year before he went to Liverpool that summer. My own story starts about here as my Dad took me on the 240 bus from Lanark at the beginning of the `62/`63 season and my first memory of Fir Park is being lifted over the turnstyles and sitting in the old stand

  17. A good trip, a tidy wee town and friendly locals helped make it. Thanks to The Met Bar who went out of their way to make us feel welcome, taxi drivers for being easy to get hold of and not ripping us off Loved the sign in The Met Bar - there are only 2 teams we support in here - Wales and whover is playing England Friendly staff and great welcome at The Stradey Park Hotel and great breakfast on Friday morning, was I dreaming or did I really see a guy dripping wet in swimming trunks stroll through the breakfast room ? there wasn`t even a swimming pool in the hotel
  18. It was right next to us, we were in Block N19 Row E and shouted to the steward when it started, he got there quickly and separated them but then the perpetrator started swinging again. By this time more stewards and police arrived and removed him and all we could do was tell the police that they`d got the right guy A guy who seemed to be part of their party came and sat next to me and started telling me about something to do with his nephew(s) and how people were out to get them but he was pretty incoherent and not making much sense As we left on the final whistle we saw the guy outside with the police in their van. Real shame as we`d had a great day and greatly enjoyed the hospitality of the good people of Llanelli I hope the old fella and is family are fine and it won`t be too long before we see the matching knitted jumper & tammy again
  19. Tried googling it but can`t find it ( The Beach Cafe not the sea ! )
  20. cheers I found this http://www.sheeshmahal.net/ for any others who fancy a ruby. Reason I asked about the beach was looking on google earth there`s a photo of The Beach Cafe and it looked just the place to have a beer, when you spend most of the year 100 miles away from the sea it just sort of draws you to it
  21. Any of the curry houses open in the afternoon ? Which ones do you reccommend ? How far is the beach from the Stradey Hotel ? Any bars on the beachfront ? Ta

    Motherwellnet

Absolutely tremendous read and it brought back so many memories for me eg 14th May 1963 was my first ever case of `manflu`, the night before we were humped 6-0 by Celtic and I took to my bed with all the symptoms of a broken heart and my ma didn`t make me go to school. Well done
  25. For me too please, I have a couple of mates happy to travel up from Dumfries to support us provided they can get tickets sorted. My understanding is they can phone the ticket office up until tomorrow and collect from 6pm onwards at the stadium in Airdrie (?)
