As gutted as anyone about last night and canny believe we are getting dominated by league 1 teams. It looks simple to sort imo and that is we need 2 midfielders one to link attack and midfield and 1 to link defense and attack ala turnbull and gorrin. Hard part is finding them but our 3 last night and against queens park just stand in same position with no movement and i am not exaggerating here when I say none of them want the ball they just want to stay in their position and defend. We were on half way line watching last night so a good view and a lot of time our defenders were on 18 yard line 3 midfielders all about 30 yards out in a line and our strikers 10 to 20 yards inside airdries half, the gap was massive and meant if our strikers got a long ball up which they often did they had no one to lay it off to and airdrie defenders just kicked it away. I dont know if its GA tactics or midfield arent good enough or a bit of both but its worrying and we will need to get lucky during games in league if we are going to do much with that midfield. A lot are saying that wont be midfield for start of league but it looks as if it well could be. Id take rhys mccabe off them and liam brown back from queens park as although only 1 game v us they are better than any of our 3 and they both want and are comfortable on ball. Maguire i feel has something as hes fit and mobile and competetive but he needs 2 ball players next to him so he just has to charge about and also why at 6ft1 is he out taking corners it infuriates me. Robinsons midfield 3 was always set up and you could see what their role was and since GA came in I have not seen any game where i thought our midfield was in control as we won games at end last year through cole watt and roberts. Some of our performances were dire but as we scraped wins it covered shortcomings. Maybe Donnely will make a big difference and ohara but the majority of games midfield is where the game is won and lost and those 2 are out more than in. a front 3 of KVV Woolery and Watt has potential and I notice someone said Roberts has been moaning at hearts so he would be good to get back and watt maybe play just off KVV. We could go on and on but Ya Bezzer post about the players only here for a wee while and no really bothered is totally true but as always we will be there and hoping it improves and every now and again get a bit excited again its what being a Well fan is all about.

That's a great point wee yin. And 100% correct. Our midfield has been really poor this season and other than love in for campbell totally justified . When polworth was top assists in league he was still getting grief on here for being a "shitebag lazy bugger" who's set pieces were worst ever. It was hilarious and I wish we had someone in that form now. A midfielder who always wants the ball I hope is a priority.

Would love it to happen and all the pessimists saying it would be the end of Scottish football are imo wide of the mark. Yes sponsorship would I'm sure initially drop but football is our national sport and not like Ireland or wales where rugby is bigger. League would be very competitive and if you look at countries like Slovenia for instance they have clubs and population maybe similar to us and maribor have been in champs league. Plus the glasgow 2s fans would be going mental every 2nd week or more as they wouldn't be winning. All this pish that with money they'd be top 4 is nonsense look at likes of arsenal.newcastle Everton leeds etc I could go on who have done nothing in years. Their support would plummet I believe. All this talk of colts teams is I believe coz if they went to another league it allows their fans still to be involved in all the towns all over scotland supporting them in Scotland. It should not be allowed to happen

Totally agree with that kmac. They were miles better than us and Davidson has built a good solid squad
-
Yes we like him coz hes one of our own and I like him due to this also but if we are honest midfielders in my day I am (49) were the best players on the park with the no 9 a greedy fucker who could win you games. It's still same now but our midfield there are none who are really good football players. Maguire is best of them all imo but if you compare him to gorrin Rodriguez for instance he is miles behind. Our forwards are good and have potential but due to midfield limitations we are going to struggle. Polworth who I rate will be getting better by the week by not playing.
-
Yes it was scary at end and the subs like robinsons were so negative and invited them to come at us. But and it's a big but if it wasnt for utd keeper we would have scored 5/6 or more. Kelly has made 2 great saves and we are praising him to high heavens so let's not forget our forward play which was best wev been all season. Cole outstanding with watt not far behind and even long with his best game in a year. I dont know where that performance came from and other than last 15 mins it was very good and another step forward from county game. We are improving rapidly and thank god for that.
-
nope ill disagree with you there Shaka. yes hes left footed but very much plays on the right to cut inside rather than going outside if playing left wing. came on against rangers on right also.

Simple analogy Ropy but definitely the right one. It seems simple to try and get the best players at clubs at a lower level. Nisbet has shown if you are top player in championship and young and hungry then chances of success in spfl are high. I felt with the money we had banked year before then surely we should have been in market for him and maybe be were for all I know. This is where sometimes we have to take a risk as 250k was obviously now looking like money well spent. Also I feel more youth from other spfl clubs that for whatever reason it is not happening for them at clubs they are at. Dean campbell for instance at aberdeen always looks tidy on ball but is only a bit part player for them but was one of top players in under age scotland teams for years. Low risk and low wages I think but with potential.

Totally 100% agree ya bezzer it winds me up. I see it all the way down at boys football where a simple 10 yard pass from a player that keeps the ball and opens up pitch doesn't get any reaction but someone charges in and kicks ball out park gets big well done . Its reason campbell gets as much praise on here also but let's be honest his passing and awareness and shooting are miles behind Maguire but as he is busy about pitch he gets a lot of plaudits. Football is simple in that if you have the ball other team cant score but a lot of players dont want the ball coz they are scared and that is worrying. Top players are always available for the ball as well as always charging about the park.

In games v us last year I was impressed by him and was shocked when I looked him up and saw his age as I hadn't heard of him before. He imo is better than any of our midfield based on last years games v us and that includes campbell. He passes the ball tackles and as shown v us scores . For whatever reason he is out st mirren team but he cant just suddenly have went pish. Maybe a fall out? Who knows but we desperately need midfielders
-
That is totally spot on. Huge moments in game and I get so annoyed when we seemingly just accept it. Call it out it's not whining its facts.
-
No no proof as such other than anything we can all read. That's where we used to buy and those players were successful all the way back to Lambert from st Mirren . Even polworth who yes is poor just now but he was Inverness best player and this is who I'm suggesting
-
As always on a terrible run we are making out that all our players are crap when that's not the case. If we are being honest then yesterday if the keepers were swapped then we would have won the game definitely. I dont like to slag or talk down our players for nothing but I for the life of me been watching Well for 35 years cannot remember a worse one than Chapman. He is just big and that's it and even at that cant dominate his box. A good post from someone yesterday saying how our model of recruiting lower league english players to move on is not working as their is no stability at club due to this which I agree with. Our model should always in an ideal world be roughly 3or 4 from youth 3 or 4 Motherwewell stalwarts and rest others from where we need to be signing the best of other scottish teams I.e nisbet shankland magennis etc. I know some of above might have been out our range but we never seem to be interested in any young Scottish talent which is disappointing. Like a lot of others have said all the money we have made recently has not been reinvested in team to try and get good enough players that have any future transfer value or have improved the team immediately.

I'm also in favour of this. Very good talker imo on tv and also won cup with youths. Him and faddy as assistant .

Hardly "toys out the pram" ! Anyway thanks for your input and effort over the years

Thanks andy for stopping another new topic. If you cant run the site maybe time to step aside. Always liked your input on here but theres a reason p&b is now just a wee bit in front and I've now realised. Thanks

With ohara to centre back and donnelly and Carroll back this would make a big difference. A big problem is goals and if Aaron's was available hed be great. White.hastie.long. lamie.mcginley.bevis. unfortunately are not good enough and can go anytime. McAllister not getting a game at stmirren I've always thought is a player. Plus obika . Mcmann accies lb. There are loads of players in spl who I feel would improve us more than some that are picked up from non league england. Some of celtic or rangers youths who have stalled their careers at aged 20ish must be better than some of our recent buys.
-
Bringing mcginley on was a bad decision as was white. If lang and watt were tired which I didn't think then bring on cole and seedorf who have pace and can run with ball. Poor decisions from robbo. Its easy with hindsight to say this or that but I felt that when hagi came on we should have gave them more to think about defensively rather than continue to sit in. They flooded the box in the knowledge that we had no one to go forward quickly but they had no defenders and a half decent breakaway could have sealed it for us but we didn't have players on park to do that other than last 5 when we were losing and we brought on cole.seedorf and polworth. Was a hard watch but if wed held on nobody would be bothered. I feel now we are lacking a couple of players that have been top internationals for instance but getting old now ala McManus Macdonald Pearson etc . Someone like a charlie adam to help our youngsters and drive up standards.

Yep I'm with you and can see what hes trying to do. Obviously being realistic it's going to be very hard going but the reaction of our fans to the team before game has started is so negative and predictable. The way he has set up will be exactly same as how st Mirren set up. Yes lamie has been poor and maybe dropping ohara into defense instead with Maguire in midfield is a decision. And cole for lang but what else? I still believe polworth is our best player but hes been off it for a bit although was gd when on last week. I'm hoping as everyone on here we produce something.
-
Never saw them last night but sunday against dundee utd was the 1st time this season that i have watched them when they did not look totally dominant and by all accounts last night same. Dundee utd played a 541 to combat their 2 best players (tavernier and barasic) and it worked. Hope we go same way and if we can contain them early doors we will grow into game i think id go Archer, back 5 of odonnell ,ohara mugabi, gallagher, mcginley mid 4 of polworth, campbell, maguire, cole up front watt Those players also give us big advantage at set pieces with all back 5 plus cole over 6 ft. Theres always hope and ive always got it but god knows how
-
Easy to blame everyone but my take of the game was we were unlucky. All games are really close and today with disallowed goal and other gd opportunities the game could have been really different. Our forwards dont create enough for themselves and whilst I'm a polworth fan he is now being marked out of game. This ultimately means no creative players going forward. We need imo a gd cf and also wingers who are dangerous ala arriybi for instance. Plus our midfield is really lacking someone who can pass the ball . After all that the funny thing is there is not much between all teams other than top 2.
-
I think dec will start in the 3 with cooper or McKenna to left with mctominay to right. Tierney I think can only get in at rwb in place of odonnell. we need some height to combat their big players at set pieces plus to give us a threat there in attack so 3 big cbs plus dykes for aerial threat. If tierney plays cb that means only 3 big players which I think would not be enough to combat them.

I was 14 as well and there with my football team mates watching from enclosure. My memory is of what looked like a fat guy in midfield running game from basically not going out centre circle and myself being amazed how good he was as a budding midfielder myself. Was only one jan molby. What a player.
-
Great post and my thoughts exactly. Plus the watt one as yes hollander touched ball 1st but then was dangerous follow through and anywhere else on park it's a foul and a booking. It looks like sour grapes meaning after a 5-1 defeat but these are facts. I'm in happy Clapper camp I suppose but down after today. Scene was set in 1st 10 mins when a few dubious fouls went to them and a big one when linesman who was 5 yards away gave corner but madden 30 yards away over ruled and gave goal kick. Robinson whilst looking sporting after game saying nothing about the decisions and blamed it on performance is also pandering to them and it makes me mad.
-
Its oh so easy to always blame people for the loss and I like most feel the game was there to be won but our lack of experience and also the big one Belief that we could beat them cost us. Any game of football it is always someones fault for the goals and gallagher sending off i feel may have happened coz we got away with mcginley one. Campbell and Watt to a degree were best players last night and I feel that comes down to in the main that they believe in themselves that they are as good as who they were up against. We badly need a midfield general similar in playing style to gorrin who can get on the ball and dictate as every time it was played into ohara i was flapping and so was he as he is not quick or nimble enough. To be fair to him his best position is where campbell plays so he is having to make do. I also feel maybe polworth could play there as his passing is best part of his game and would like to see a swap of him and ohara position wise.
