SLC quarter final Motherwell v Celtic 19/10/2022

Back to your seasonal knicker wetting. -
An important game for sure. We need to go right back to doing the basics, something that’s not been happening and yes I do believe we have enough in the team to do that. As mentioned above we played well up at Aberdeen only a few weeks ago with more or less the same group of players, this talk again of the worst squad of players is nonsense, anything other than relegation a plus, again total nonsense. The defending has been appalling yet we have plenty of experience in there, we have one of the best goalkeepers in the league, left back has been sorted, good options on the other side, Lamie was probably our best centre half last season, it’s not full of teenagers but some with actual international experience, it’s players not doing their jobs. Midfield has gone backwards for some reason, again back to the basics of workrate, organisation, aggression where needed. I think mistakes have been made up front, we needed additions that could hit the ground running to support Van Veen, wrong choices in my view. I’m sure the manager is fully aware of what’s needed and if that happens we should be ok with a good record against Aberdeen. We certainly can’t have a mindset of waiting till Christmas to start picking up points when we’ve been more than able of doing ok against anyone outside the old firm for years. If we start thinking that way we are in trouble.

Not sure I would say it’s crucial at this point, but after the last two game we need to concentrate on the basics, even given the quality of the opposition we’ve been dire all over the pitch. -

The gap just keeps getting wider, I’m afraid we can sign who we want but that’s not going to change. However having said that we were frankly just dreadful, I left after the third goal. -

I guess you could argue that if we were to go through that’s the favourites out. I’ve no doubt we would have won one of the cups if we’d not played Celtic in both finals. -
We certainly should have had far more points in that bad run, fine margins in many games.
-
I’m not convinced it’s ever as black or white as some would have us believe on here. One moment the team are amazing, the next the worst squad in history. Robinson and Alexander excellent managers that got us out of problems and did well in the cup to absolute bomb scares who did not have a clue what they were doing, there is just about always a middle ground that’s rarely trodden on here. Hammell will be the same, good and bad runs, sometimes a hero and the next week a villain. All had the same objective, stay in this league regardless of how we look.
-
For what it’s worth I think he will be given time, I can only see the board getting rid if we are in the bottom two, if that happens he won’t make the season. They were patient with both Robinson and Alexander, that won’t change with Hammell but staying in the division is crucial regardless of who’s in charge. I don’t have the history with the club and Hammell so for me he’s just another manager who will be judged on results which is all it really comes down to at any club regardless of the level of entertainment on offer. Supporters want entertainment as long as it includes winning games.

It’s difficult to see anything other than a right pumping, but miracles can happen I’m told so who knows. -
Honestly I think he’s getting way less stick than he would be if he was not Stevie Hammell. I don’t disagree with much of what you post but by the same degree he does not get a free pass just because of who he is. Entertainment value is an 8/10 but other than that he’s no more than 5/10 In his time in charge. The entertainment does need to come with a sensible balance and as you say a level of risk. It’s making sure that over the next couple of months he gets that balance right.
-
I would agree, I think Morris is totally out of his depth, Tierney is young and has talent, he just needs support and time not one or two writing him off.
-
Yes I’m afraid it was bad. I do understand the posts stating that Rangers are on a different level to us financially but we were our own worst enemy, we’ve taken draws against Rangers teams that we’re far superior to yesterdays. It’s also a mental attitude thing with Rangers, as badly as they play I never get the impression we believe we can actually take them on and win, we never had a better chance to do that in my view. Unless we have a day like one or two other teams have had against old firm where they put that fear to one side we will be another 20 years.
-
Absolutely not although I still maintain that was as poor a Rangers team as will will probably face in many years to come. I’m certainly not writing him off by any means, I hope he comes good. I am however under no illusions that we need to pick up more points and regardless of his background with the club the home form for one needs to improve quickly. Football is a ruthless business and this club can’t afford to be relegated. Previous managers would have been slaughtered after that line up and performance, he does not get a free pass forever.
-
I hope you’re right, I’m as positive a supporter as it comes and hope he manages to pick up enough points to allow him the time needed to develop his own squad. I can accept I’m maybe being slightly harsh and worrying a little too much, he seems a nice guy and obviously loves the club, regardless that’s one win in six now, regardless of performances, being easy on the eyes, giving youth a chance, we have to start picking up more points. The home results are appalling and that would be a good place to start turning it around.
-
Honestly I’m more worried under Hammell than I ever was under Alexander of Robinson, there is a naivety that I think could see us in real trouble this season. Yes he’s trying to play attractive football and bring in young players, I just hope it’s not at the expense of our top flight status. We played the worst Rangers team since the play off win today, they sat back, had absolutely no confidence, and were there for the taking but frankly for most of the game we were awful. I really hope this works but I still worry we appointed more on sentiment than it being the correct choice.
-
Hopefully he’s not costing that much. I think we all knew what a gamble he was, at the moment it’s proving those worries were justified.
-
Well there was never a better time to beat Rangers than today, they were awful. We however were even worse which is pretty depressing. We failed to even do the basics for most of the game.
-
Well this is pretty dreadful from both sides, I’m not sure it’s even the normal Premiership level. There seems to be a total inability to pass the ball to a player from the same side. Rangers look like they would rather be anywhere else other than on a football pitch, flatter than the playing surface.
-
Just looking at the Premiership I still believe if others had a chance of actually challenging for the title we would see attendances increase, I do understand the old firm bump up the stats but even then many home supporters won’t even attend those games. The strange thing is the crowds down south have increased and not just at the top level, football has become far more attractive to families. As an example when I was watching York in the 1970s in what’s now league 2 attendances were as low as 1200. York now play a level lower than that and the average this season is 4800. I honestly don’t know what the answer is in Scotland but I certainly don’t believe the old firms line that they prop up Scottish football, they kill it for many.
-
The rest of the clubs are holding them back because they hoover up most of the local support in towns up and down the country leaving everyone else unable to compete financially. I would be very happy if the pair of them buggered off and played elsewhere.
-
I would say to anyone that’s against var in Scottish football, what’s the alternative ? Carry on as we are with the truly dreadful standard of decision making we have now ? Everyone just shutting up and accepting the refs will make awful mistakes game after game ? One or two refs up here are seen as a joke, you only have to sit around others rather than just watch games on tv to hear the comments. If I honestly thought standards could start to improve I would be fine without it, does anyone honestly think that could happen ?
-
The decisions now are a disaster in game after game, look at the blatent pen not given which would have gone to Var. I don’t like the way it breaks up the flow of a game but it’s been shown without doubt to get the vast majority of decisions correct. There will always be cases of the wrong call still being made but my god it’s got to be better than the shambles in Scottish football that we have now. I personally don’t care about the debate on the old firm and their influence, what’s important is improving the level of overall refereeing decisions.

1-3 to Rangers. Sorry I don’t think we are close to being able to get something, hope to be proven wrong.
