First thing is trying to build up confidence again, it’s a huge factor at any time.

I would certainly have OHara at the back alongside Gallagher. Has Hastie really showed enough to deserve another start ? Not for me but new manager new ideas so I guess it’s possible. Donnelly back will make a difference because I’m still not convinced that McGuire is the answer and hopefully Carroll gets backup to speed as quickly as possible. He likes a 4-4-2 but I agree it’s difficult with the players we have at the moment, we’ve now lost another wide player in Lang which lowers the options even further.

If he starts with any one of Lamie, McGinley, White, Hastie , Mugabi, Grimshaw, Crawford, Seedorf don’t bother unpacking your bags.

Well I would have preferred Wright but he’s had plenty of success down south and should have the contacts. Hopefully everyone gives him time and their full support and we can move upwards again with everyone pulling together.

I think you’re slightly playing down his management record. That’s better than any other manager outside the very top clubs. He was certainly criticised for the style of football, even St Johnstone supporters were giving him belters regardless of how well he did, of course that would never happen at Motherwell.

My choice would be Wright then Alexander.

The club got it right with Hastie in holding firm on a long contract until he had played enough games to show he was not a one trick pony. He was literally on fire for maybe five or six weeks before other clubs worked him out, he was getting subbed off for us before he even moved to Rangers. We did extremely well to get the transfer fee we did, he will never mover for money again, and yes his level his Scottish Championship level at best.

His relationship with the board seemed to deteriorate and looking back that was all about the budget and constantly losing his best players. Rather like Robinson I guess it ends up becoming impossible at some stage when you are constantly have to rebuild. I would not be surprised if his playing budget did not just stay the same but was actually reduced, I really thought they would go down unless they started investing in the squad again. I still think whoever his number two he’s the safest option, but the board do need to sit down and think again about the playing budget, not break the bank and build up huge debt levels again ( they do have a responsibility to act in a responsible manner and not put the future of the club at risk) but it certainly needs increasing. If we want a decent size squad plus some quality additions they have little choice in my view.

Those are certainly the positions that need filling and it won’t be easy. I still feel the timing of the change is dreadful, either go earlier or stay and bring in the players already identified. No idea what happens now with those players already well down the line signing wise but I’m struggling to see how the new manager has time to judge who he wants to stay, who he would like to go, and then recruit those he needs, that’s a job for the summer. A positive start would be a fit Carson, Carroll, and Donnelly which alone would make a difference. I still think though even a manager coming in that could install a level of organisation and lift confidence may be enough to tip it back in a positive direction anyway, there is enough quality in the squad that even a couple of decent signings could turn it around. We are a million miles away from being a lost cause that’s for sure, it’s going to take the right appointment and some hard work but it’s more than doable.

Yep, I would certainly not let Grimshaw go. Many players take the hump when not playing but he seems to take it in his stride and although limited he’s still pretty reliable.

I would have thought that just the nature of football, a good crop come through at the same time then you often have a gap before it happens again. I take it the investment in youth has continued and not been cutback.

White, Hastie, Polworth, and Lamie were signed from Scottish clubs, Carroll, Moult, Aldred, Hartley, Tait from English lower league clubs. It’s not that black and white. As ever it’s about what playing budget the manager has available to him, the bigger the budget the more opportunity to sign better quality players regardless of where they are playing.

I just think as things stand he’s a safer choice, good reputation and experience at this level of Scottish football, he knows what it’s all about and did well at a similar size of club. I’m not a fan of his football but Motherwell are not going to suddenly turn into world beater under any manager. Other than that it’s other Scottish managers that have failed or taking a punt down south which for me is more of a risk. He was not my first choice initially but the more I think about what we need the more I think he fits the bill.

I think Lasley is probably not even in the frame now. It’s just a case of getting the right person in, as soon as possible. Wright would not be the worst choice should he want a return to Scottish football, we would not be the worst choice for him.

Either the cupboard is totally bare of quality as you state, or it’s not. It’s not about match winners and more about leaders on my view. There is a lot of anger just now, I’m not happy myself, but looking at the players we have logically there is still plenty to build on.
