Without getting into the length of contract debate again, it is still heartening that we now have a number of young exciting players coming through and being given opportunity to prove themselves. The frustration around the lack of youth development has been a recurring theme on here for some time. Hopefully the rather meaningless end to the season will give increased opportunity for those knocking at the door

Then what were you doing? There were 2 ways you could’ve commented on your quick stay check. I would’ve chosen to take heart from the blokes game count. You interpreted a negative and conveyed it in your usual passive aggressive manner but this time with a hilarious attempt at humour. so what was the point you were making? Or were just cracking an unfunny?

Yep, let’s decide that he’s pish before he even pulls on the photoshoot jersey.

Well, I reckon the club should’ve known how good he was when they signed him. Why didn’t they see it !!??!! They should’ve offered a 3 year deal and a loyalty card at tinto tapas ...... how could they have got this so wrong !!??!! I think he would’ve definitely signed for longer in the summer on the offer of the loyalty card.

It’s been a strange one at Scunthorpe this year. They’ve gotten used to finishing in the playoffs year on year and oddly sacked their manager at the end of August. They’d lost 4 or 5 key players to the championship leaving McCall with very little opportunity to make any signings of his own and a small squad at the end of the window. He signed a lot of players in January with a big claim that they’d push on to challenge for the playoffs. None of them have really made a difference and inconsistency has pulled McCall into the tightest relegation dogfight in years. Going into the weekend, Scunthorpe were amongst 13 teams who could be in a relegation spot come 5pm. McCall lost a must win against Rochdale yesterday whilst key rivals won leaving Scunthorpe only 2 points away from relegation. It’s hardly a surprise he’s been sacked but I think it was the wrong gig in the first instance.

That’s the game ! I remember leaving fir park that night thinking for the first and probably last time in my life that we just might be in with a shout of winning the league. This final table shows just how close we were. IIRC, we were in the running right up to the penultimate fixture and then St Johnstone beat us 2-1 at fir park on the last day of the season to drop us to 3rd.

Agree that Turnbull is a worthy shout for both. Disagree that anyone who thinks otherwise for POTY is being absurd or deserving of or inviting derision or mockery.

If I recall correctly, the 94-96 kit launched early and they wore it unannounced for the first time in a season 93/94 crunch title race match at home against the h*n. Can anyone verify? It was the first time I’d seen a hoop on the socks. Some great players wore that kit !!!

One for the youngsters

Am I the only one to see the irony in this youth debate ? It wasn’t all that long ago that the manager was being criticised on this thread for not putting the youngsters into the first XI

I get the point that if there is a trend of players not signing or signing late then there is cause for concern. On that point then (one for the statos or those who know more than me), in recent years.... What reserve/youth players have the club failed to sign or have left it late to sign up? What reserve/youth players did the club sign up early? Where are they now? Not a loaded question. Just needing some clarity on my part.

Good post Denny and the best I’ve read from that side of the argument. I expect that I am one of those you refer to and in many ways, you’ve encapsulated some of my thinking. You highlight McKinstrey and Miller as examples of kids whose heads have been turned and rightly indicate that situations like that are not unusual. And this is the difficulty for me when trying to lay blame for the clubs perceived failure in safeguarding our investment in young talent. If the evidence is there (which we as fans are seldom likely to see) to show that the club failed to recognise and address the loss then I’d join the attack. But at the moment, there are still insufficient evidence to convince me that the club were negligent. Think about it. If any one of us were in these boys positions, had confidence in our abilities and were full of ambition and saw team mates lured by bigger clubs and offers, how many of you would accept your first offer of contract and close down your options? I for one would work my socks off to encourage a bidding war. Many have criticised Newell and Gordon getting new contracts. Perhaps the club did offer (similar to described for Hibs) all of their identified talent the new contracts and they (both having been at bigger clubs and know the colour of grass there) are the only ones to have signed them?
-
The power of hindsight. We can always say we knew something when in reality we knew very little. Running a football club is not my industry and am reluctant to express a view on the clubs negligence and or malpractice without knowledge of that industry or the happenings in one particular workplace within that industry. Talking of knowing very little, does anyone on here actually know if the 3 were offered an uplift and extension of contract last year? Does anyone know that they weren’t? I think there’s 2 phrases that sum up this debate, “You don’t know what you don’t know” and “opinions are like areseholes...”

Here’s a question for you all..... What is your favourite Well shirt/kit of all time and why?

New shirt arrived today.....absolutely fookin LOVE IT !!!!

Yep, you really do have to wonder. whilst you’re at it, why not try wondering about some of these...... There weren’t just four Beatles members The Beatles were a rotation of different, similar looking, people, one of whom was from Grimsby. The US didn’t invade Iraq because of Saddam or for oil but to get hold of a Mesopotamian star gate The US invaded Iraq to get ahold of an ancient Mesopotamian star gate . You might’ve seen the film Stargate? It’s based on a true story. The the Olson twins are just one person. That the Olson twins are just one person moving back et forth réally fast. North Korea is using Pokémon Go to spy on the U.S. and the western world I reckon you’ll really go for this one Steelboy!!! Pokemon Go is really a tool that N. Korea uses to get kids and eejits who should get a life to spy on the western world by taking pictures of top-secret locations.

I hadn’t read this thread for a couple of weeks so have had a fair bit of catching up to do. Fuck me, there’s some pish getting slavered. To hear that some were booing Hastie today is an absolute joke. He’s a 19 year old boy who would not have been prepared for and (by his own admission) never expected this level of attention. I would wager he’s not been media trained. I hope to christ he doesn’t go on this forum to read one of his own clubs fans twice calling the boy a cunt because of a speculative story in the most guttural of red tops. True to form, there are those blaming the club for having not signed our hot talent up by now. Many of whom are the same people who blamed the club for not putting youth first. Even when they do.....apparently it’s a shambles. Even for you YaBezzer, that’s a belter. I’d love to see your stats to substantiate the claim . It may be lost on some that this is a critical point in a footballers career. They are leaving the Academy age groups and looking to push on, find their level and stake their claim for a short but hopefully fruitful career. There are so many variables, why would anyone in that instance want to tie themselves to a long contract at the earliest instance? A fans perspective is factually obscured and tainted by tribal emotions. A wee bit of objectivity goes a hell of a long way.

They were claret in the same way that the badge on the home replica was black. I would wager they were done on the same press

By a very long way, my favourite Well shirt of all time
-
I was hunting for a pic for the retro shirt thread and came across this. I was in exile by this time ..... but who the funk is this orange skinned geezer !!??!!
-
I’ve been hunting google images for the white 86/87 away shirt and can’t find it. I did find this though. Wasn’t this the inside front cover of every match programme? This was the first season I started going regularly with my dad. I know I’m being a sad twat but my dad couldn’t afford to buy me that shirt or even a programme for every game so the memories associated to that picture alone are phenomenal. The excitement of a match day, the novelty of a programme and the magical feeling of falling in love with your football team.

2018/19 Game 27: Celtic (A) Sunday 24th February 3.00pm Kick Off
Gadgey replied to Yabba's Turd's topic in Club Chat
I really enjoyed watching Brendan moan last night about his perceived injustice over the Toljan sending off. Its amazing how his views on things have changed now that decisions aren’t going his way. That is karma!!!!
