Whilst I agree with most of what you've been saying, I think a start would be for a young manager to not sign known duds and say what he's said. As you've outlined, it's a difficult enough task already for him to get it right, but he's fucked it here.

I completely accept that it's commonplace to sign players who turn out to be duds. What isn't, however, is for a manager to state that a player is a project and that they're hanging their hat on them when all evidence points to the fact that the player was already a known dud, unfortuantely. My point is that I think he’s effectively backed himself into a corner by doing so. And I also don't think it's good for the player for the manager to put that level of pressure/expectation on them given the scenario.

As I wrote previously, I, unfortunately, believe that Kettlewell signed his death warrant when he signed a striker known for their inability to score goals and sought to justify that bit of business by saying that he's hanging his hat on this project. We needed a goalscorer, not a 2-year project. I actually feel a bit of empathy for the player because he tries bloody hard for us and I want him to succeed, but it's not happening and all evidence before he was signed indicated that reality. It's ridiculous and naive of him to have signed that player and even more so to have said what he said in that interview. It also begs the question of his rationale for other signings, suggesting to me that analytics and common sense are probably double Dutch to Kettlewell, Daws and the Board. Fans are fickle and won’t forget this type of bold stupidity of playing fast and loose with our tight budget.

The only way Turnbull will get back into the Scotland squad is if he moves elsewhere, and I hope he does. Great player.

They're both extreme ends of the spectrum and all my posts on this have been about seeking a balance between the millionaire and complete pish spectrums. To answer the sensible part of your question, the different thing I would have us do is to not sign complete pish projects like Bair on a 2-year deal. Bair wasn't an unknown quantity to Kettlewell so he knew what he was getting, which was and is complete pish. Add Wilkinson and Shaw to that as well. And if you think we can't afford better quality than Bair, then I don't know what to say. Does this satisfy you?
