Ah, fair enough. I made good on my promise and stopped reading that thread.

Surprised nobody has commented on 'Flow's promotion to Chief Operating Officer. I was in the "dubious" camp when he was appointed as GM, but I think COO is an ideal role for him in the club. Congrats all round.

You don't even get a pension boost in the NASL. Even in the top league, only a few players get top dollar. The vast majority are on salaries less then $100k per year thanks to the salary caps in place.

At his age? Absolutely. Same reason as guys like Cadden improved from their loans rather than playing non-competitive U20s.

And what lots of young players need to realise is that to earn more money in the long run it's often better to serve you time and learn your craft first and boost your earning potential. It's a bit like getting a degree or serving an apprenticeship. Hone the skills first and your career earnings will typically increase.

I know I've said this before, but I always feel slightly let down when Julian talks about flights. I have a mental image of him driving his cab hundreds of miles to every game.

Every summer I swear I won't read this thread until the new season kicks off. I think I have finally been persuaded to stick to that.

"Fair" only if you completely ignore the part that reads "While I think we have a great chance of getting through the initial group" Still that was in the 2nd sentence of a 2 sentence post, so I can appreciate why he might not have reached that part. Probably either exhausted from the effort of reading the first sentence, or had been overcome with blind internet outrage by that stage and missed it.

Aye, the fighting at US sports events is rarely reported. Happens all the time, though and, even worse, in some cities when teams win or lose big games (even college teams) it can result in riots in the streets with shop windows being smashed, cars turned over and the odd shooting. Tanked up Steelers, Jets, Knicks, Rangers or Browns fans are not averse to kicking off.

Steve King was always one of my favourites. Scary to see Gordon "Night" Mair, The Rile and Ruby Murray beside each other.
-
Were you at the Albion Rovers game? While I think we have a great chance of getting through the initial group, I have been following this mob long enough to know there is know such thing as a banker cup game.

Just to add to Yabba's post. When I moved over here in 1997, the Jets was an all season-ticket stadium. There was a 10 year waiting list for season tickets, and that list was closed. Then they decided to build their new stadium. A guy I knew had decent seats at the old stadium around the 40 yard line. He went with his dad and his son. When the new stadium opened he wasn't allowed to buy the same seats. Instead he was offered the privilege of buying 3 personal seatslicenses (PSLs) for $20,000 each for 3 worse seats. That $20k would allow the 3 of them to buy season tickets each year. The season ticket price for the new, inferior seats was 3 times more expensive. In the space of 3 years, the Jets managed to burn through their 10 year waiting list and are now advertising tickets for individual games on the telly. Unheard of in the New York Market. They even had to give away thousands of tickets for some games to get around the rule that said the stadium has to be "sold out" before they can show the game live on local TV. The Giants followed a similar path with similar results, and up in The Bronx the Yankees ended up having to drop prices to their new stadium having hiked them up to crazy amounts after it opened. So it's safe to say they have no qualms treating fans as loyal mugs. And Madison Square Garden is infamous in the city for being the worst of the worst in ripping off the Knicks fans.

I'm guessing you have never been to a Yankees or Mets game with $10+ beers and a car park where they close literally half of it in the middle of the season so they could house the circus. Of course, having a few billion dollars in TV money + state funded stadia also makes it easier to provide a better fan experience. Not to say that they don't have a number of things right, but just listen to any sports phone-in programme on a Monday morning to hear all the horror stories about facilities and rip-off ticket prices. Especially when there are play-offs involved.

That's true, and I hope we do take it seriously. If we decide to mess around with u20s against the "weaker" teams, however, it might not be so straightforward. Our early season form isn't always great, but I suppose that is true for most of our opposition too. It's not like Europe where some teams have half a season under their belts.
-
That's a good theory if we were good enough to relax and win at the same time.

A couple of seasons ago I heard our top earners were on 2k a week. I could believe that, especially if it included bonuses while we were finishing best of the rest. However, it could just as easily be complete mince.

Again - the first statement was my opinion (regardless of whether you agree with it) that I believed the society had likely co-opted the best available people. The second statement was aimed at people who disagreed with me, pointing out that if you do have a different opinion, there are mechanisms in place to vote out people you don't like. I didn't state, or even imply, that I wanted to vote anybody out. I'm not going to press the point any more, but I still think it was pretty clear. First statement was what I thought. Second statement was aimed at people who thought differently. If that's still not clear, then I have run out of different ways to express it.
-
I made 2 points. 1. That I believed that any competent people who wanted to work for the Society would likely be working for them already. 2. If any member wasn't happy with the Society leadership there are rules in place that allow for emergency resolutions to vote them out. I can see how people might disagree with my first point, but If the implication was those 2 statements are somehow contradictory, I'm not sure I see it.
-
I'm sure that's true to some extent. The other challenge he faces, however, is that it's increasingly unusual for us to line up with 2 wide men. Which is understandable, even if it can make for some exciting attacking football.

Our 'amber' adidas was still one of my favourites though.
-
Exactly, Unless it's 50k and 450k addon if they ever get promoted to the EPL.
-
If people are really unhappy, there are mechanisms available in the Society rules to remove the people they are unhappy with.
