I know what you mean, but the players do need some time off too. The early Euro games are really part of the pre-season too. I know they are important, but I don't think they can be dealt with any other sensible way.

McLean almost got us relegated. Butcher almost got us relegated. Mowbray got WBA relegated and he's ready to take the Celtic job. I'm not saying I want Jeffries (I don't), but anybody that takes an SPL job outside the OF is going to battle relegation once in a while.

If he based his decision on a few postings to this website, then he will never have the temperament to be a manager.

As long as the next manager doesn't turn up and tell us on day one how he'd rather have the Celtic job, I think we'll all get along just fine. I don't see anybody on here saying McGhee didn't do a good job on the park. Just that his pathological need to tell everyone within range that he wanted a 'step up' every 5 minutes, tended to grate after the first 3 months.

See, we agree on this one I also believe that in these days of the modern manager, there are many good assistants who won't want the step up. Gone are the days when the manager was the guy who ran the day-to-day minutiae of the team. Most of the training and player wellfare seems to lie with the assistant, while the manager has to take care of other responsibilites within the club. If you are the sort of guy that gets more satisfaction from running the coaching and training, then club management might not be the career for you.

If that thread does exist, I guarantee you won't find any such comment from me. What you will see in other threads are some comments accusing me of being 'Happy Clappy' when I have supported some of McGhee's managerial decisions and been appreciative of what he did for the club. Where he fell down was touting himself for a new job within a few months of joining. He didn't learn from that and continued to express what should have been private thoughts to the media. I doubt many people care what ambitions he harbours, but it shows a lack of respect to his employers to keep airing them in public. He has a reputation for walking out on clubs. It is mostly undeserved, but it's easy to see how he has acquired it, by continuously talking about moving on to better things while under contract to a current employer. He has already done it again with Aberdeen by telling them he really wanted to Celtic job. You need to have a psychological problem or an ego the size of Fir Park to do that, as it's not the behaviour of a rational person. That might be acceptable to you, but to me that lacks class. That doesn't mean I think he did a poor job for us. It means I think he did a poor job in managing his exit. If you want to call that droll revisionism, then feel free.

It also assumes that all 10 SPL boards outside of the OF are in agreement. If one or two are happy enough with the way the money is divided, then they aren't going to rock the boat. Just because we want to see a change doesn't mean they do.

A cunning bargaining ploy from JB. "But look, we wanted him as manager - that bumps up the compensation you need to pay". I obviously don't see what he is capable of day to day, but I'm glad he didn't accept. It's too early to appoint an assistant after the Malpas debacle.

If he'd kept his mouth shut instead of constantly talking himself up for other jobs, I doubt anybody would have been too upset. Even today, he is on record saying that he'd rather have the Celtic job. As someone else mentioned, there are 2 ways to leave. The McFadden/Porter way and the Pearson/McGhee way. EDIT: In fact Porter is the example McGhee should have followed. Chris mentioned he was coming to the club to move his career forward, and then kept his head down and did a great job. When the opportunity to move came along, he said all the right things, respected the fans and the board, and left with everybody's thanks. That was the classy way to do business.

That's Eck in a nutshell. Give him a decent squad of players and he will get the best from them. Give him a transfer budget and he is clueless. That's why he did well in the Scotland job too - no purchase of players required.

He was a manager with Telstar, but whether or not you regard a best finish of 10th (in the second division) as "doing well" is up for debate.

I hope he does really well and Aberdeen finish one spot behind us in the league every season he is there.

Brockville, Starks Park, Shawfield and Muirton were my favourites for some reason, closely followed by Firs Park and Annfield. Starks Park in particular I remember for parking down at the water and walking up the hill, the train running past every few minutes and the concession stand being the guy in a van that parked at the back of the terracing.

I don't know if it was a better standard (although our teams did often fare better in Europe than they do now), but it often felt more exciting due to the bigger crowds generating a better atmosphere.

I wasn't having a dig at you mate, it was an honest question. I have seen so many 'reliable sources' on here that are posting so many different 'certainties' from insiders I was wondering if there had been any actual quotes from the man himself. I missed a lot of the press when I was on holiday last week, so wasn't sure if that was an official line.

Did he blame the financial situation at Motherwell for wanting to leave or is that just another unsourced rumour?
