The thing about Wright is that his last experience with Killie was the first time he was in an actual relegation situation - and he blew it. Not only was he incapable of getting Killie out of relegation trouble, their performances in the play-off were beyond pathetic. A play-off that is set up to favour the Permiership teams.

He certainly stabilised Killie. They were a solid mid-table Championship team when he left them.

In this kind of story journos seem to use the word "favourite" as meaning "someone I'm guessing might have applied for the job" I'm pretty sure nobody on the Board is running a book and sharing the odds.

That still rules out Wright though. Kettlewell was more successful keeping Ross County up than Wright was in his relegation battle at Killie.

The one plus of Wright getting the job would be the money I save by cancelling my Well Society subscription.

Every time we have a vacancy we receive applications from people like this (or agents applying on their behalf). Even if we were interested in them, none of them are remotely interested in working with a club operating under our financial constraints. I imagine they think we have OF budgets because they are the only Scottish teams they have heard of.

First order of business has to be someone who keeps us up. That doesn't exclude someone who is progressive, but that is secondary for now. That means someone with a bit of experience of this situation, and success in dealing with it. Generally, in these situations, you need someone with the opposite personality of the outgoing manager. The biggest thing that struck me about Hammell, at least in his interviews, was how intense and serious he was. That's not a bad thing to be for part of the time, but at some point you need to be able to impart some fun and enjoyment in the players, even when they are underperforming. So whoever comes in, as much as anything else, needs to bring in a fresh approach and mentality.

Time to focus on the league etc. etc. Take your pick...

If anyone had a solution to why things turn so bad at football clubs, they would be very wealthy. It happens at all levels in all leagues. Liverpool is a great example this season. Making it to the final day in 4 competitions last season with a team that was full of skill, energy and the high press. This season, with basically the same squad, they have been - by their standards - listless and hopeless. Conversely, sometimes it just takes a lucky break or two to kick start a revival. Most seasons a struggling team in the bottom six goes on a wee run that elevates them into mid-table safety. Hopefully, without all the 2022 baggage, the new signings can bring a fresh attitude to the next few games and get things turned around.

I hope it runs past the summer window, because with the best will in the world, the players available to us in January are typically B-listers.

What are the odds we'll injure at least 3 of our new signings in training by Friday? Happy to see we have been pretty active this window. As much as anything else, just having players with a fresh mindset has to be a plus.

We've already signed a striker, a winger, a defender and an attacking, goalscoring midfielder - while loaning out Maguire, Shields and punting Sol. I'm not sure how many other changes you were expecting in January, but that's a pretty active window.
