  1. I wonder just how many actually went on to play at a decent level? I notice Phil’s and Alex Burns names in the 88 squad, however, what became of the rest?
  2. Squirrel, we have a long way to go before we can say that we have turned the corner, however, I am hopeful that a well drilled McGhee team can scrape a draw. Are the Killie fans back on side with Gary Locke?
  3. Beckham receiving the 1991 Milk Cup. Of course it would be rude not to mention that in 1983 Motherwell won the inaugural Milk Cup.
  4. A bit harsh surely. In saying that, my face wouldn’t even look good on the radio. I googled the name John Berry and got this album cover image. He’s not a country singer in his spare time by any chance?
  5. Even at this early stage, we need to keep picking up points, even if it is only one. It’s all too easy to get cut adrift in this league and Dundee United are a good example of this. Hamilton showed last season the value of gathering as many points as early as possible, as in the blink of an eye you can be sucked back into a relegation battle.
  6. Striker John Goldthorp playing at the Fir Park that I remember as a boy. He scored the winner in a Texaco Cup match against a team who just happened to have worlds greatest goalkeeper Gordon Banks between the sticks. For that moment alone, he will always be a Motherwell legend.
  7. Willie Hunter and Joe McBride looking splendid in the Summer Cup away top.
  8. The Scottish Cup is paraded through Motherwell town centre in 1952.
  9. A long shot, however, I am trying to locate a decent or reasonably decent image of our late 50s early 60s white away top. Does anyone have one or know where I can source one? This is us wearing it in a pre season team shot (the white top with the claret crew neck with the bold claret V insert), however, I am looking for a more individual image (action or posed). The shirt was long sleeved, however, on this particular image the players have rolled the sleeves up.
  10. The wee ‘guy’ on the line is Celtic and Scotland winger Jimmy Johnstone. In the olden days prior to photoshop, images were enhanced/retouched with a steady hand, photo dyes and a size 0 artist paint brush. Whoever, worked on this image was obviously short on time. It’s a skill that I learnt in the early 80s, when working in a busy advertising/design studio, however, these days this old school technique is rarely used. When over done like this one, a retouched figure can look a little like a cardboard cutout, however, when the images were dot screened in the newspaper, the retouching would have looked less noticeable.
  11. He was a good honest pro and always gave 100% for Motherwell.
  12. Dressed in his trademark black kit, McCrae is beaten from the spot v Celtic 1970
  13. A rare early 70s colour image of Motherwell in action v Celtic at Fir Park (circa 1971)
  14. In the mid 70s Motherwell were one of the many pro teams that were supplied training kit and match wear by Admiral Sportswear. Our team track suit was one of the designs featured in the Admiral professional kit catalogue from season 77/78. Recently, suppliers have become lazy by churning out bland training wear which has no link (apart from the club badge) to the club colours. It’s time to bing back proper claret and amber tracksuits.
  15. We are taking small steps in the right direction, however, our inability to score more than one goal is still a big problem With that in mind, I can’t see past another 1-1 score draw.
  16. Our first ever sponsored kit (circa Feb 1984)
  17. Accies 1-1, thankfully that means that we are still above Thistle.
