Maybe one for the oldies!
While doing a bit of kit research I stumbled on a puzzle regarding our then new Admiral kit from the 1978-79 season
August 1978 - January 1979: New Admiral kit. Amber top, with two bold claret vertical stripes and claret collar.
(See picture of Gregor Stevens in the game v Hearts played on the 25 November 1978)
Around February 1979 - May 1979: We strangely revert back to the earlier amber top with white & claret sleeve stripes. We wore claret shorts/socks with white & amber stripes, rather than the amber shorts and socks used in our first Admiral 1976-78 kit.
(See mascot pictures from v Hibs played on February 10th 1979 & v Morton 28th April 1979 this was the second last game of the 78-79 season)
Does anyone know why we reverted back to our earlier Admiral 1976-78 top?
The Fir Park Year Book from 1978-79 does partly explain how the new Admiral double claret striped top might have came about.
Excerpt from the 1978-79 Fir Park Year Book:
"Early this year manager Roger Hynd threw down the gauntlet to 'Well fans: "If you are not keen on the present 'Well strip let's have YOUR designs for a new strip!" And the response was incredible...drawings, descriptions, paintings all flooded into Fir Park and seven finalists were eventually chosen with their designs sent to Admiral for their opinion on the final selection with the manager travelling to the Midlands factory."
I have no idea if Motherwell or Admiral went ahead with any of the designs submitted but at least the Year Book quote shows Admiral looked at them. If Admiral did produce the winning kit it seems a shame that it was only used for part of the 1978-79 season
