  1. Lamie and Mugabi have both had good spells in the team so I don't think they are uncoachable. However they are both inconsistent and have mistakes in them. I think Lamie has more 1st team potential than Mugabi and I'm not against both or either being replaced but as 2nd string players I think they are worth a place in the squad. They are both experienced, know the league and have a wee bit versatility, Mugabi can go to right back and Lamie can go to left back in an emergency. What I wouldn't want would be Lamie and Mugabi together as the centre backs for any length of time.
  2. Queen's Park's defence last season was the main reason they didn't get promoted. Might be another high scoring game.
  3. I'm afraid in Scottish football there is a bigger quality gap between 2 and 3 than there is between 3 and 42. Cup shocks used to actually be shocks. They happen multiple times every round of matches now. We should be winning our two home ties and getting through but definitely shouldn't be taking Queens Park lightly.
  4. I'm absolutely in favour of two teams being relegated from the Premiership every year, even though it puts ourselves in greater danger. The currently league set up is a bit stodgy and airless. We pretty much see the same teams every year and we need a greater turnaround of teams going in and out of the league. If you compare it to some of the lower leagues in Scotland, they are getting a 40% turnaround in teams competing in the division some seasons. It keeps things fresh but the Premiership is rather dowdy and I doubt turkeys will vote for Christmas.
  5. I've already said here that I don't expect us to be able to bring in like for like replacements for the players we've lost and as a result will probably be a weaker side. But the age issue stands. If we don't do something this season it's definitely going to be a bigger problem next season. Whether they come from elsewhere or our youth squad, we definitely need some younger options in those positions.
  6. I was talking earlier about getting some younger players into our back line with Butcher, McGinn and O'Donnell all in their 30's. Now we sign Souare who's 33. Might be a decent player individually but I have my concerns collectively. The impact Johnston made last season and even in individual games coming on was there for all to see. In my opinion we need that kind of dynamism especially from one of the full backs.
  7. Dundee Utd losing to Spartans St. Mirren losing to Montrose St. Johnstone losing to Stenhousemuir Decent result at this stage of the season as the above illustrates.
  8. I think we only scored 3 headers all last season. Something like that anyway. It's a part of the game that's going away.
  9. I know, the previous youngest goalscorer since 2000 was Clarkson.
  10. Tony Watt misses a penalty and a chance to equalise against Spartans then immediately gets subbed.
  11. This century at least. Previous David Clarkson scored aged 17 years.
  12. Nice to see youngster getting a chance. Not signing anyone might have it's up side.
  13. Just interested to see how we line up and perform as we will have to change it up from last season. Good opportunity for Kettlewell to show some tactical versatility. Won't be drawing much significance from the result either way though. This is really a preview.
  14. Good news on Casey. Still think our first choice back line is a bit old (McGinn and Butcher are turning 33 this season) but maybe we can get one more season out of it.
  15. OK, first time seeing this and my take is.....it's idiotic. Clashes with Hearts and Aberdeen so what's the point? Also this sort of creeping philosophy that clubs can only wear 2nd kits that are the same colours as the first kit, you can see it across the league now from Celtic to St Mirren, kind of feeds into a parochial and narrow mindedness that I don't really feel that comfortable with. It's not the worst kit in the world but as an alternative, as a change kit it just doesn't make any sense.
  16. I don't really care either way but do you think it was a coincidence that our 'sash' kits stem from a period when the Union Jack was flown by the support and 'Billy Boys' was sung on the terrace. Just asking! 🤣
  17. Lucky we had a youth system that got us out of a hole so many times. Turnbull coming in and Scott going out are good examples of each type of scenario where it's turned the club around mid season. And if you go through all those league place finishes, they don't tell the whole story. We finished 3rd in atrocious form that was mirrored the next season and saw the manager lose his job. At least two season saw near miraculous new manager bounce happen when Alexander and Kettlewell came in. Plenty here were predicting relegation on both occasions. The point is that it becomes harder and harder every season to replace a certain standard of player. I know some here weren't fans of Goss, but I was and I would be amazed for instance if we manage to bring players in from the market that like for like match Van Veen, Goss and Johnston last season. We are likely to be a weaker team next season, measured against ourselves, unless we pull of some transfer market miracles or one of the youth players do something. How that stacks up against the competition remains to be seen.
  18. The turnover of absolutely shite players brought in from here, there and everywhere is something that goes much further back than Hammell. You are talking, for the most part, at least 5 years of terrible close season signings. Eventually it catches up with you with the squad being denuded of the remaining talent, season after season. We got away with it last season but something similar might be lurking in the near future. The talent disparity, lost and brought in (so far), is miles off and has to give you the fear. I'm not one of those guys that gets a knot in my knickers with a lot of time left in the transfer market.....but there has been a trend of decline probably going back the McGhee's last season, so I won't be banking on a raft of likes-for-likes, even.
  19. Me too and I'm not pretending to know the technicalities, however... "We've no got any money" seems about right from what I'm seeing.
  20. The mood music seems to be 'we spent our money in January'.
  21. 3-7-12-5-12 is reasonable for us in terms of bringing someone in. 6 out of the last 7 seasons we've not had someone in double figures for league goals, so he's statistically better than we've been as a club. Like I said time will tell.
  22. I've always thought the reverse colours didn't really work for us. Besides Dundee Utd, and possibly Livingston depending on their strip, we mainly wear an away kit against Aberdeen and Hearts and if anything it's more rather than less of a clash.
  23. Interesting that Wilkinson has some decent assist stats as well as a reasonable scoring record in recent seasons. Of course time well tell.
  24. He was considered one of the best right backs in the league. Hearts were also interested.
