The fact of the matter is Butcher focused the team around McDonald because he knew he was our best player and for the most part it worked. Also, McDonald scored 15 league goals in the Malpas season. He keep us up. If it wasn't for McDonald you'd probably be watching First Division football. For all the moaning and complaining from Well fans, McDonald was one of the few players that made an effort that season even though he knew he'd be off. He was ambitious and a Celtic fan, get over it! McDonald was probably one of the top four strikers we've had at this club in the last quarter of a century.

It was Alain Sutter unless Turkyilmaz was linked separately.

Shame he's moving on but his contract was up in the summer and I think its the right thing that he moves on now and we get some cash for him. In the 25 years I've supported 'Well we've not exactly been over imbued with good strikers and while not in the top rank, Porter was certainly one of the better ones; I make it 27 goals in 61 starts.
-
Well he's never had an extended run of starts and he is still a very young player, I think I'm right in saying he was only just 17 when he made his debut. I'm not going to say Darren Smith is the greatest player in the world but he's a big lad with a good physical presence, has pace and a decent record in front of goals. I think he's worth his place in the squad, as for proving himself as a first team player, he's never really had the chance.

I made myself clear on this issue at the time but I think its preposterous to retire numbers. The club tradition should be, and has been, that the outstanding player, whether in ability, loyalty or commitment, at the club wears the no.10 shirt. There have been many great players worn it in the past and that should continue in the future. If you want to remember Phil O'Donnell you should do it by keeping the no.10 shirt out there on the field instead of retiring it.

Rubbish, I'm sure every well fan would have loved for the game to be played there but the facts are they have had 3 goes, not been able to get in on and who's to say it won't be canceled again? Enough is enough, for a cup tie if the game is canceled twice then the match should automatically revert to the other sides stadium. Inverurie will hardly suffer. Their players will get to play in an SPL stadium, in front of a bigger crowd, their fans get a wee trip down here and Inverurie will probably make more money. Hardly suffering.

Klimpl for me too. I thought Clarkson was excellent as well but ran out of steam a bit and didn't have anyone to play off when Porter was subbed.

To be fair if we had been in Falkirk's position I'd have been wanting us to do something similar. It was down to the referee to keep a grip on the game and stop it getting out of hand and he completely failed to do so. There was no authority from him whatsoever. As for McBride, he was laughing his head off as he jogged back after nearly snapping Hammell in two.
-
Totally agree with this. For a start Murphy hasn't done anything of note for months and is in danger of being exposed to too much too young. Besides that we actually played after Porter when off without a striker when we were putting pressure on Falkirk and should have been trying to win. However, there was nothing in the box to aim at and we never really looked like scoring the winner in the last 10 minutes (+5). Poor decision by McGhee. Even if he didn't want Sutton on, put on Darren Smith who has at least the height and strength to win a header in the box.

You are not the only person to think this by any means but, with all due respect, I think you are talking a lot of rubbish. What are you basing this on? The one game he played on the left side where he had a nightmare or the loads of games in the center of defense where he has played blinders? OK, I fully accept he's not been as good as he was when he first burst into the team but it wasn't that long ago Motherwell fans were complaining that Darren Barr had been called up to the Scotland squad and Mark Reynolds hadn't and this was based on his performances at center back not as a left sided player. People forget he is still a young player learning the game and I think he has suffered this season from a) being tagged as a million pound player and the link with Rangers and b) missing an experienced partner for a lot of the season. Just like Clarkson he can come back again not just to his past form but become an even better player than he was before but supporters need to let him mature as a defender and get off his back because his potential to be a really good player is still there even if his form has suffered a bit lately.

Arrgghhhh!!!! Robbery at Fir Park! In some ways I'd rather we'd played garbage cos these games are hard to take! Should have been about 5-0! Fitzpatrick and Porter both missed candidates for 'sitter of the season'. The referee was a complete joke and McBride should be ashamed of himself for his tackle on Hammell. Smith - 5 Not much to do and no chance with the goal but was really shaky in the closing stages. Quinn - 6 Good match but as usual his deliver into the box let him down. Craigan - 6 As soon as he was off the park we lost the goal.... Reynold - 5 Another one who although he didn't have much to do looked shaky Hammell - 7 Gave Falkirk all sorts of problems going forward and when he went off we had no good ball into the box O'Brien - 7 Gave us a wide option and looked dangerous going forward Hughes - 5 Another disappointing display from Hughes Fitzpatrick - 6 Did better at left back than in midfield, should have scored a sitter. Klimpl - 7 Good performance, a candidate for MotM especially in the second half Clarkson - 7 Hit the bar once (or was it twice?) and took his goal well. Showed why he is so important to us. Porter - 7 Worked his socks off but....those chances! Lasley - 6 Came on as a sub and battled away Murphy - 1 Not much impact except a wayward shot

Nah, we want Adidas Tango balls. Tango = Platini, Maradona, Zico, Socrates, Rummenigge, Michael Laudrup etc etc. That was the era for me!
-
Here's one of those statistics that usually come back to bite you on the ass. Falkirk haven't scored more than once in a SPL match in 12 games. If we score we are guaranteed at least a point! (touch wood).
-
Clarkson is the best player at the club.
-
Man, those goalkeepers were pish! No wonder Greavsie and Emlyn Hughes just to joke about us and Alan Rough won 50 odd caps!
-
At this stage finishing in the Top 6 would be a good recovery. I don't really see 3rd place or Europe as a realistic proposition unless we hit some seriously good form, i.e beating all the teams above us at least once.
-
I've been a critic of Smith at times but I think he's a better goalkeeper than Fraser. You have to give players a chance but I have some real reservations about this one. I'd rather we had tried to bring in a keeper from the lower leagues with a good reputation like Tuffey or Gallacher.
-
I hope this Fraser deal is as a back up keeper because I don't rate him at all. Maybe he'll prove me wrong but my reaction to this is 'oh no!'
-
Again, like the Europe issue, folks need to calm down. I've only seen Klimpl twice, once he was shakey, the other time he put in a reasonable performance. It's entirely possible he's played great in all the games I've not seen but let's judge this guy when he's played 20 - 25 games at the end of the season instead of 6 or 7 now.
-
You have to laugh. At the beginning of the season everything was terrible and the team were useless and the manager didn't have his heart in it and we were going to get relegated, then we went on a wee run and it was Top 6 and Europe Here We Come. Then we hit a bad spell again and it was gloom and doom and McGhee could get to fuck and the players weren't good enough and we were in a relegation struggle, then we hit a good batch and its Top 6 and Europe Here We Come. The Motherwell support has some kind of bi-polar condition! People need to calm down a bit. If you have your sights set on Europe next season and nothing else you are likely to be disappointed. It's going to be tough for us to make the Top 6, although very possible. It is going to be even harder to make a European place. As someone else said take it one game at a time and adjust your expectations accordingly because this is Motherwell and its usually one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

All very good goals but Dundee United looked like they had a bit of a shocker in defence. I've said this on many occasions before but Quinn needs to get to the byline more often. Too often he hits crosses in from 25 - 18 yards out which are useless, yesterday we got the first goal because he went to the byline and hit a cross in that was actually dangerous. Hopefully we'll see more of that in future.
-
Great result but we need to follow it up with a result against Falkirk. They have been a tricky team for us in recent times.
-
Quit time wasting Smith! WE WANT 10!, WE WANT 10!
-
How many goals is that against Dundee Utd for Clarkie now? About 147 or something?
-
Holy shit! I'm in the seclusion of the university library today writing away. I put the latest score up on the internet and it's 3-0 and it's not even half time yet. Sound like good goals as well. Unbelievable considering Dundee Utd's long unbeaten run. Hope we don't turn off in the second half....
