Celtic have lost twice in this domestic campaign....both to 4-3-3 formations. For me the whole idea of flooding the defence and midfield against teams like Celtic hardly ever works. You are better just going for it like we did in the first game at Fir Park. If we'd taken our chances in that match and cut out poor individual mistakes we could easily got a result.
-
That's exactly why we were right to sell. Next season there might have been much more serious consequences in selling a good first team player. None of the things you have mentioned have changed, they are all still to play for but if we don't make it we'll probably still have had our best season in ages.
-
Scott was our out ball. He beat players, created spaces for others and brought us forward as a team. Wasn't there today so can't comment on today's performance but I think it's going to be a problem for us, if you'll excuse the pun, going forward.
-
Last time at Fir Park they scored with every shot on target. 5 out of 5.
-
Gillespie keeping us in it by the sound of it.

Do you think Scottish football is held in as high regard as it was at the time of Lee McCulloch? The facts are the reputation of the league and the quality gap between English and Scottish football has massively widened. The quality of Scottish football has plummeted far further than any inflation calculation would take account of. Performing well in our league is not even considered as any kind of reliable indicator of ability. It's considered almost like a kind of youth or amateur football. A player stands out a bit and clubs take a punt on them with no great expectation. To imagine the context of the James transfer is anything like that of the McCulloch transfer is to complete ignore what has happened to Scottish football over the last 20 years. You aren't even factoring in that Lee McCulloch was an experienced players with close to 150 appearances when James Scott has less than a season of experience. You also ignore the different financial model that the club operates under. When McCulloch was sold we were operating a debt that we couldn't operate under now, in fact it nearly ended the club then. Today the club has to live off it's own means and that equates to not having the same ability to turn down offers of note. A couple of months ago plenty people around here were of the opinion that James Scott should be farmed out on loan, or that he wasn't first team material. Now we are receiving 1 million up front and potentially more. I liked Scott, I pushed for his inclusion on these forums but in my mind this is a good deal for the club. I think it stretches credibility to make out that anyone thought we'd be selling Scott for this fee now. That tells its own story. Does it impact the starting XI? Of course it does, if our new loan signing doesn't step up, I think we'll suffer more than a little on the playing side but in the position we are in as a club it is far more important that we can continue to fund a high level of youth development and that the club doesn't run up debts. The thing we have to insure is that youth development is a major, in fact integral, focus, so that the next Campbell, Scott, Hastie, Turnbull isn't far away.
-
Disappointing to see James Scott go but since clubs generally buy potential from our level of football, rather than experience, I don't see any other way of conducting business. The days of holding on to players and building, as in the McLean era, is simply impossible now and while that might be hard and unpleasant to swallow its something we just have to come to terms with. In the general scheme of things its important that we keep up the high levels of development that we saw under Craigan's tenure and that is a major focus for the club to continue to produce good quality players.

Not touch. Barge pole.

Here's the old firm league defeats since Rangers got back into the top level in 2016-17. 6 - Kilmarnock 5 - Heart of Midlothian 4 - Aberdeen 3 - Hibernian 2 - Dundee 2 - Livingston 1 - Hamilton 1 - St Johnstone 1 - Inverness 0 - Motherwell 0 - Ross County 0 - St. Mirren 0 - Partick Thistle With the exception of Kilmarnock, who Steve Clarke did an amazing job with getting rid of the wee club mentality, I think a trend is pretty clear.
-
Even when good, wee teams tend to have a wee team mentality. At the opposite end of the scale even when bad, bigger teams tend to have a bigger team mentality. Teams like Hearts and Aberdeen have done well against Rangers because they approach the game with a different mindset. It goes beyond form, line ups, tactics.
-
Aberdeen now 3 wins in their last 10. Not great form and the fans aren't happy with the style of play. They are under a wee bit of pressure and have been dire since the break. Livingston should not be underestimated. For me they have one of the best midfield rosters in the league, are coming off 5 home wins on the trot and have only lost at home to Rangers and Aberdeen. Away to Livingston has been one of the tougher fixtures for the past couple of seasons.

He's obviously been to the Ronaldo School of Winning Free Kicks.

Gallagher. Had a wee slip near the end but otherwise breezed through the match.

Bit of a frustrating match today. Felt we completely dominated the first half but it was summed up in James Scott, destroyed the Hibs full back but the final touch wasn't quite there. That was sort of echoed across the team - good performances but lacking end product. Second half didn't think we were at the same level, we still dominated but we gave Hibs more opportunities to counter attack which were the only occasions they really looked dangerous. MacIver did well enough but when Manzinga came on he provided the physicality that perhaps MacIver lacked. Was only denied by a great save. Our performances at set pieces was poor considering Hibs aren't exactly a big team. Overall the performance was decent enough but just lacking that edge up front.
-
Bare in mind these are only league match appearances between 2010 - 2019 so some players would have more appearances, Mark Reynolds for instance had a lot more, but certainly for the current squad that's correct. In fact 11 of our current squad have made their Motherwell debuts this season - if you include Casper Sloth who hasn't yet made a league appearance and isn't on the list.
-
I was away all day yesterday and I don't usually comment on matches I don't attend but just wanted to say what an excellent result last night was. Also a wee fact - we've worn our away strip 5 times this season and won 4 and drawn 1. Must imbue the greatest super powers since our 'Dortmund' strip I reckon.
-
Today - 0 seconds. Pulled off the individual season spreadsheets that I've been keeping for 15 years.
-
I said as much. There are at 10+ midfielders who were much worse (Gomis, Clay, etc) but they tended to be central midfielders and given the limited choice of left wingers that's who I went for.

Didn't play many games and was as far back in the decade as you could get. That and some ignominious competition probably got him off the hook.
-
He played once from the start and once from the bench. We lost both matches to Ross County and Dundee.

Wasn't on much over the holidays so must have missed this. My Motherwell XI 2010 - 2020 Gk - Darren RANDOLPH (also my all time pick) Rb - Tom HATELEY (strange that we've been fairly weak at right back all through the decades, not a great selection but edged it over Tait) Cb - Stephen CRAIGAN (better than often given credit for) Cb - Shaun HUTCHINSON Lb - Steven HAMMELL Rw - Chris HUMPHREY (again bit weak down the right, Ainsworth was just too inconsistent and declined over his period at the club, while Humphery left a much better player than when he joined so he gets the nod) Cm - Keith LASLEY Cm - David TURNBULL (not even one full season but just too good to leave out. Actually a lot of players in this area were highly inconsistent with good seasons and very poor seasons - McFadden, Pearson, Ojamaa etc. Nicky Law probably the hardest done by not to make it.) Lw - Jamie MURPHY (actually preferred him playing through the middle but still good enough to take the left midfield spot) Cf - John SUTTON (Another, like Craigan, who I feel doesn't get the credit he deserves, excellent goal record over multiple seasons) Cf - Louis MOULT (our best striker since Tommy Coyne. McDonald and Higson deserve mentions) And my nightmare XI Gk - Gunnar Nielsen RB - Fraser Kerr, CB - Louis Lang, CB - Zak Jules, LB - Joe Chalmers RW - Deimantas Petravicius, MC (You could easily have about 10 absolutely deserving duds in here but I'll go with...) Jake Taylor, MC - Paul Lawson, LW - Elliot Frear (although not good enough overall, probably doesn't deserve to play along side most of the rest of this team). Cf - Alex Fisher, Cf - Jacob Blyth (only had 1 league start but I can't not put him in!)
-
I was there two weeks ago. Took the opportunity during the winter break to visit some grounds I'd not been to before. Maybe not the most exciting draw in the world but we have a pretty good record there recently and should be a decent match.
-
Been a fairly typical performance from us. Look like scoring a goal or two against lesser teams but think we've been slack at the back. Dundee are poor but they have still managed to create a few chances that better teams might have done more with. Would imagine we'll get the third in the second half unless we totally turn off.
-
He's only 32. Not old for a goalkeeper. Could easily still have 6, 7, 8 seasons in front of him.
