Not a "great choice" but a bit more positive than "indifferent".

Unable to access the site for most of the day - probably due to it being a big news day.

In his Sky interview Stuart McCall made sp[ecific mention of the importance of Saturday's derby. Very early doors but a promising start

That sums it up well for me. Now it may be that most of the team is suffering from some kind of flu bug and if thats the case, I'll apologise in advance. However the experienced players must shoulder a lot of responsibility. When we needed it most they failed to show the younger lads any encouragement or leadershp or direction. We shouldn't forget that lads like Saunders and Hateley are still young. That for me is the first problem the new manager will have to address.

A good start would be to match Accies for determination and aggression and thats something we haven't done for quite some time. Is it beyond us?

Not my choice by any stretch of the imagination but he'll have my support. Ticks a few boxes but his less than impressive track record lets him down as a few have said. Some reaction on here has been OTT but its not an ideal situation for any new manager to be in with a split support. He's got a job on his hands to win many fans over. A good win on Saturday would be a start to winning over hearts and minds. Still JB has a good recent record for selecting managers.

A bit unfair. The guy deserves a chance which he hasn't been given so far. He's a lightweight winger (as many wingers are) end of, but has hardly played there. To play him as a lone target man is not fair on the player.

I can't give you precise dates but we were certainly known as the Dossers as far back as the 1920s - and I suspect before that too. Its likley that the term predates "Steelmen".

The problem is that even lower league English clubs will be able to pay their managers way above even what teams like Aberdeen and Hearts can pay. George Burley? His stock fell badly after his stint at Hampden and in Southampton. Thi is all just speculation and we don't know exactly what the club is up to - the way it should be. Still it makes life interesting!
-
Can't say Stuart McCall inspires me at all. Certainly he has English lower league knowledge but thats about it. His track record at Bradford is nothing to write home about and there's no evidence he can cut it as a manager. All just rumour of course at the moment.

Seconded. JG had his strengths but also his weaknesses. The fact of the matter was that he wanted to leave some months before he actually departed and had been showing an interest in other jobs shall we say. Many said he was working his ticket. More to it than that of course but that'll do.

Flow Can I ask that you include details of the Fife & Tayside Supporters Club in the appropriate section. Cheers.

I'm too young to have been there, but my late father used to tell a story about a banner that the then Flemington Branch made up for the game. Dundee's great star at the time was Billy Steel and what he was going to do to us was nobody's business. The banner read "We're not afraid of Steel - we've been handling it all our lives". And we weren't and we did.
-
But apart from taking Ross County to the Cup Final what else has he done? Gordon Chisholm has a similar record but he's no longer mentioned.
-
Agree with all of that. There were also very few police on duty on Sunday. I also thought that the Rangers fans were meant to be held back to let us leave but that never happened. Stewarding and enforcement were inadeqaute. The issue of OF fans in the POD Stand does not get the attention it deserves.
-
I suspect that we're casting our net just a bit too high. You have to wonder though how much the 2 "candidates, who have allegedly knocked us back so far" know about football in the real world. They both have recent EPL experience and that is the world they know and are familiar with. Its not representative of Britsh football as a whole.
-
Don't know Dave Penney at all but having checked his track record it seems mixed at best - nothing to write home about and nothing there to suggest why he should be a front runner.
-
I heard Spiderpig, who was sitting directly in front of me in the POD Stand, taking a steward to task but I'm not sure what for - perhaps the segregation arrangements?
-
Good post. I don't blame Gordon Young though. He's doing his best and has answered the call of duty. He's not cut out for manager; knows his limitations and has said that - all credit to him. He's a damned good youth coach. I just wish more people in life, both inside and outside football, would take the same attitude. To know yourself well is a great position to be in. You can't ask any more of someone.

In a few words - not an option. Civil engineering and possibly planning contraints for starters. The site is very tight and wouldn't really lend itself to building a modern stadium. There's also the financial aspect - we'd need the proceeds of a sale to part fund any new development. Stay put and redevelop Fir Park and you've already lost several millions. Practicalities - where would we play when the demolition/construction work was taking place?

Agree with many others that we put in a dreadful display. It lacked aggression, determination and method. We lacked confidence and that was apparent from the opening minutes. Another quality we lacked was leadership - there was no one to fire the troops up and urge them on. In short we seem petrified of Rangers. The big problem was midfield where the combination was all wrong. Marc Fitzpatrick should have been on from the start or even when Tom Hately retired through illness. As Steve says we couldn't put in a tackle worth the name and when Rangers surged forward we simply retreated. Keith Lasley, our only real defensive midfielder for most of the game, is a trier as he showed again yesterday, but was totally ineffective and disappeared when we were under the cosh. However I'm not singling him out for his performance - he was no worse than the others. One plea regarding Alan Gow - he nees to be given a fair chance. Yes, he's lightweight as I said when he signed, but he needs to be given a run in his correct position - left winger. We'll see, for various reasons, if he's given that opportunity. Given the total lack of midfield protection its no wonder then that the defence was under pressure. Its never ideal when your midfield shield is sitting 2/3/4 metres ahead of you on the edge of your own box and the opposition is surging forward. That said, our defence needs drastic surgery and changes will need to be made by any new manager coming in. A centre half, right and left backs would do for starters. A new manager needs to be appointed quickly to lift spirits and limit damage on Wednesday and Saturday. However he needs to be the right one for the job.
-
Yes, I'd agree with that. He also left us with some short term signings whose contracts are about to expire.
-
Agreed. It wasn't very pleasant today, and I'm not referring to the plumbing. No water in POD Stand toilets. The staff did all they could as Alan Provan says, but the bottom line is that we need a new stadium.
-
I would guess that the Police won't allow tickets to be sold too near KO.
-
In that case he's not the man for us and we're not the team for him.
