Yes, I'd agree with that. Maybe Willie MacLean's team of the mid 70s was better to watch but thats up for debate. For all his success, Tommy MacLean's teams were rarely great to watch - some exceptions of course like cameo performances from the likes of Davie Cooper. I did however take a perverse delight in watching wee Tommy's sides take an absolute pounding for 89 minutes and then sneaking a 1-0 win.

A very frustating player, Neil. He has talent in abundance but is very inconsistent. Yesterday was the perfect stage for him to perform and he simply didn't rise to the occasion. He had perhaps about a couple of very good runs but apart from that did virtually nothing. At Kilmarmock recently his name was hardly mentioned by the commentators. These were 2 huge games for us. Also in the cup replay at Paisley, on a decent pitch he didn't really come to life until very late on ...just too late as it turns out. Maybe its the players round about him that don't suit his style...who knows, but he isn't the same player he was last term.

To be honest I wouldn't be overly concerned if both left. It would free up some wages. Neither lad has shown consistency this season, especially in critical games.
-
My letter arrived on Saturday morning, as did one or two other Fife ones. In some cases after we'd left for the game though.

Good points FC. The team selection yesterday was reminiscent of Craig Brown's Scotland reign. "If your 5 best players are centre backs then you play them all." I agree and can only assume that, unlike last season, MMcG reckons our strength this year is at the back and so you select more defenders. As it was we had these two lads both playing out of position, but both playing nonetheless.

Andy Dorman, although not quite the same type of player as Stephen Hughes, is a better one in my opinion. No disrespect to Saints but he is playing consistently well and scoring regularly in a side that isn't one of the top SPL ones. In my book that shows his true value. Had he been at Fir Park, even since the turn of the year, we would have made the top half comfortably. It was a stick on he'd score yesterday. By comparison, Stephen Hughes is very talented but in too many games, particularly crunch ones, simply doesn't show up. I honestly can't see us blood many youngsters in the last 5 games as we don't have many, if any, who are quite at that stage yet. That may well change in a couple of years though.

I made that very point when he first broke into the first team but was told by many that his skill would more than compensate for that. Having felt that he was due a run in wide left midfield I'm now reconsidering that. Today he was all too often caught out of position and perhaps he might make a decent central midfielder. He always seems to want to play inside so give him a chance to do that.

Good post Grew. I don't necessarily agree with every individual observation but it wouldn't unduly worry me if Stephen Hughes moved on. Unquestionably he's very talented but totally inconsistent and tends to disappear when the going gets tough. Today, as was the game at Rugby Park, was tailor made for him to take the game by the scruff of the neck and set it alight...but he just disappeared for long spells. John Sutton doesn't cut it for me. He's simply not mobile enough and doesn't cause enough damage to opposing defences.

I'll second that. I've bought my season ticket and intend to use it, and I'll be renewing. If I only wanted to watch my team play well and win most weeks I'd go to Ibrox or Parkhead or be an armchair fan of the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United or Liverpool. Gloryhunting is not for me. We bottled it big time today and, yes perhaps shot oursleves in the foot. I'm gutted but I'll be back. Fortunately for MFC there's a lot more like me.

The same thing happened last season with both Craig Levein and the Octopus declaring publicly that we simply didn't have the bottle to secure European football. I've no time for these "mind games" as journalists call them.

Are You Planing To Renew Your Season Ticket ?
Kmcalpin replied to East_Stand_Al's topic in Club Chat
Well said FC. For me MFC comprises not just the Directors, players and management but fans like yourself, Yir Elder, Rickoza, Well Made, Well Daft, Andy P to name but a very few. Players come and go as do managers and owners but the fans remain. -
I detected a difference at the AGM Flow, and was encouraged. A long way to go of course but a start has been made.

Are You Planing To Renew Your Season Ticket ?
Kmcalpin replied to East_Stand_Al's topic in Club Chat
I've been going to Fir Park for over half a century now and I'm already looking forward with anticipation to next season. We've had some highs and lows this year, as always, but the quality of football is better than in most years. Fortunately, I can afford to renew and quite frankly life without MFC & Fir Park would be unthinkable for me. At times when the team is playing badly its dispiriting but its uplifting to know that a fair few folk on these Boards, although not all, will go along irrespctive of how badly we play. Give me MFC any day as opposed to OF or Premiership gloryhunters. -
Were you at the CIS Cup Final in 2005?
-
Yes, 3 pieces of good news today. Both John Boyle and Leeann Dempster spoke, at the AGM, of going back to basics and concentrate on our core support. Whilst they didn't go into detail the message was clear. They deserve credit for that - signs at last that the club is listening. The first bridge has been built. The return of the Cooper Stand to our own will be welcomed by many. Overdue perhaps but lets just welcome that and move on. A freeze on season ticket prices is also welcome in the midst of this deep recession. From my limited dealings with our relatively new General Manager she has impressed me with her quick grasp of the problems that many fans have been going on about for some time. I don't doubt there's more good news to come in time. Changed days at Fir Park?
-
Initially I was in favour of the move but latterly changed my mind. Good to see MFC give the Cooper back to our own.
-
I hope we get a good turn out on Saturday and cut prices would help us to attract punters. However the Police may not be too happy about any price cuts especially so late in the day.
-
A good result for us tonight. Rangers must have a reasonable chance of picking up at least a point at Easter Road surely? However for us to have any chance of making the cut we have to beat St Mirren and that will be very difficult indeed. We've struggled badly against them this season and the game's on TV - not a good omen.

Are You Planing To Renew Your Season Ticket ?

I'll be renewing mine as always. Old habits die hard. -
When Mark Reynolds first broke into the first team it was at left back. At the time Terry Butcher said he could play centre back, left back or midfield. I'm not Steve Hammell's biggest fan, but I do recognise that his strengths lie in going forward. He is defensively frail and must share a large part of the blame for the goal last Saturday IMHO. His clearance leading to the throw in could and should have been far better and quite a few Main Stand patrons recognised that. Before he left for Southend he was costing us goals and that hasn't changed since his return. If that sounds overly negative, its not meant to be. He has talent its just that I think its better deployed further upfield. Still Mark McGhee is the boss.

I agree 100% about pricing Grew. I'd like like to see a ceiling of £10 put on SPL games but thats a pipe dream I guess. What club is going to break rank with their fellow SPL sides, slash entrance money and put itself at a competitive disadvantage. Even junior games at £5 a throw are grossly overpriced in my book. There's many a fan simply can't afford a fiver in this recession. I'm curious about your view that most games are dross though. I've read this a lot lately in many posts. Dross compared to what? Other SPL games; other Scottish games; senior football in general or compared to games in years gone by? I've watched a fair few Well games in my time and last season was some of the best I can recall....ever. Admittedly the games this term at Rugby Park and Falkirk have been absolutely dire, but I can recall some total dross in the 60s, 70s 80s and 90s. In the 1967-68 season I can recall watching us rack up 21 losses out of 34 league games. Now that was dross!
-
Well done Flow for nipping this rumour in the bud. Its not often MFC has acted so quickly to scotch such tales. I know you say that the club doesn't have a clue as to how this rumour originated, but if you do find out I'd be intertested to know.
-
A very distorted set of highlights from the supposedly impartial BBC. Now I've had time to look at it, Whilst Langfield's save was good it wasn't quite as impressive as it seemed at the time. That said Maguire's finishing was a bit better than Jamie Murphy's.
-
Undoubtedly a big factor. A year or two back Aberdeen could bring 2,000/3,000 fans for such a game but on Saturday it was a good deal less than 1,000. It was a huge game for them in their push for Europe. As for us - we're not playing particularly well at the moment, the recession is biting and there's more competition from TV football. People also have higher expectations than a few years ago - nowadays, for many, the English Premiership is the yardstick against which everything is measured and thats totally unrealistic.
-
But does that matter, if he might be at the game as a spectator? As it turned out he was and it had the desired effect.
