I think he meant that Derby had to increase their own bid, not beat Cardiff's, as it wouldn't be much use starting a bidding war if Porter already turned down one of the teams. It's possible their bid could be less.

I'll be sad to see him go, but this whole deal has been an excellent piece of business.
