  1. I haven't been a big fan of Crawford or Lamie, but I thought they were both solid today.  Lamie in particular as he had to deal with Magloire feeling his way into the game, which he eventually did and put in a good performance himself.

The key was sticking to the basics and not asking the players to do things they cant do, and as a result we looked way more organized and composed. I was worried that we would come into this one shell shocked after those games, fair play to Alexander for setting them up to grind out a decent result.

  2. Fair point there. We looked the better team in general, but St Mirren forced the good save from Kelly and the great block by Carroll at the end.

A wee but of luck might have seen us win it, but after those last two games that was a good performance to see. I would have been happy with a better performance and a point, so I'll take it.

Roberts played well, his pace helped us a lot and he was willing to take a chance from distance, and Cole came onto a better game in the second half. Watt was Watt.

Campbell in that advanced role really makes the difference, and that was some amount of work he put in after coming back from illness.

  3. I know things aren't going great, but I wouldn't be playing 3 defenders out of position as a way to solve it.

For me, a back 3 of McGinley, Lamie and Magloire, with Watt and Cole in a front 2 is as drastic as I can see the changes getting. It's entirely possible we could start tomorrow with SOD for Johnstone the only change, which is scary.

  4. We would survive, but it would be rubbish. No doubt we'd have to cut back on a lot of things, but hopefully we would stick by our academy for a while.

It was said at the AGM that we have things in place to cut costs should relegation occur, which I assume is either wage cuts or contract termination clauses triggered by relegation. We are in a decent position in that we're not sitting with any bad multi-year contracts, but still have a nucleus of a team contracted for next season.

I do want to apologize for causing this whole thing though. We had our great spell under McLean and Mcleish when I lived in england, and then nearly got relegated when I moved back. Now I'm close to moving back from the states it seems I've triggered the doomsday scenario again. But you know, new grounds and stuff.

  5. That was one of my favourite seasons supporting Motherwell, outside of all the dross there were some great moments, i was young and naive, and I think that was my first and only season where I made every game. I think that was also the year I sent Alex Mcleish a letter recommending that he sign players from Africa, perhaps inspired by Tony Yeboah, and he replied to me on a post it note.

  6. Both Polworth and Crawford were trying to get on the ball yesterday but had no options once they had it. The defense was also very hesitant to play the ball, giving St J time to cut out their options. We are very static on and off the ball and are easily nullified, and teams can pretty much snuff out our creativity by stopping Polworth. There were a few occasions where Polworth tried to force the issue by beating his man just to make something happen to no avail. He also had our sole shot of the game, despite us having 3 strikers in the pitch.

I think we’ve all decided that he can’t be arsed, because simply being out of form isn’t enough. He tracks back often enough and doesn’t hide when out of possession, but unsurprisingly his defensive skills are that of an attack minded player. Players like him are going to stand out when they have bad games, compared to headless chickens that run all day and get the plaudits.

I think he’d be at his best with a front 2 in front of him, rather than a spread out 3.

As it stands we have a poorly constructed squad and an injury situation that has exposed it further. I’m not buying that players who are already on modest wages have decided to deliberately forfeit win bonuses by being shite, in the hope that this somehow gets them a move to a better club. Or that someone is blowing his chance of playing at a rare international tournament by not playing due to to the risk of a contract extension at a club that hardly has to be asked twice to sell its players. Players low in confidence or out of form can be hesitant, and that’s what we’re seeing.

I remember when Hutchison took over the club there was a lot of talk about the injuries and investing in avoiding them. I’m not sure what we can realistically do, but the number of training injuries is ridiculous.

As for recruitment? If we keep the current staff I’d like to know how we measure their success.

  7. I know we didn’t have much to do with it, and we almost screwed it up, but getting money for Hastie looks like some piece of business at this point.

He desperately needs a run of games at a lower level, as he has the attributes to be a good player, and has shown what he’s capable of when on form, but that Rangers move has set him back years as a player. The money will be nice for him, but that isn’t going to last much longer.

as for the winter signings, I can only assume we either wanted 11 to play against in training or needed more bodies for painting the stand.

  8. Our recruitment has been poor, but the injury/illness list is killing us. I'm worried about whatever grimshaw has, that's a long time out for an illness. Hopefully Campbell shakes his off soon.

Hard to give anyone pass marks after that. It was good to see Johnstone get a full 90 mins. He was shaky and was one of the worst culprits for giving the ball away, but we hardly set him up to succeed. He did look quick and played the position well, so hopefully he can continue to push for a place.

3 up front doesn't work. Its embarrassing that we played most of the game with 3 strikers and managed one shot. Cole is really frustrating as despite the work he puts in, the ball just bounces off him half of the time. I'm not sure what the solution is, but surely we need to try something else?

Also, I understand that the manager wants to persevere with his ideas, but we clearly do not have the players to play the ball out from the back, and this situation isn't the right time to try and force this onto technically poor players.

  9. We really went out of our way to give them the 2nd goal, offside or no. How we managed to keep it this respectable at half time I don't know. I was hoping we could use our stored good luck to get some points, but it seems we're using it up just to avoid total drubbings.

Hopefully Johnstone settles and gets the chance to attack some and show what he can do.

We really need some positive injury news soon, this is dire.

  10. Maybe the club doesn't want to publically tip off other clubs as to potential selection?  In the past the injury update would be a quick blurb at the end of a press interview, so I'm not sure if what we have now is much worse.

It is weird that were not hearing much about our new guys though. With them all being temporary recruits I can see why not much effort has been put in to marketing them, but it's been total silence since the pics of them being interrupted from looking at their shoes.
