That reminds me - on the twitter description of our second goal last night, Saunders assist was described as a "Lovely ball across the corridor of uncertainty" - does anyone have any idea where that is?

Isn't it the area between the keeper and centre backs in front of the goal when defending a cross or free kick? I'm pretty sure it is.

It the place where footballers like Brian Kerr, Kevin McBride and Charlie Miller vanish into - never to be seen again...

I thought it must be some pass if he's played it from Craggs hallway to Pollock, either that or Flows being overdoing the creative writing classes. There were also a couple of parts of the match report on the official website which doesn't really describe the action for those who weren't there.

Is this a joke? I can't actually tell.

that is the area between the keeper and the centre backs. Generally between the penalty spot and the 6 yard line. also know as on mans land. the use of the word corridor tells us that it is from out wide as the back line and the keeper make up the walls of a corridor - with that sort of detail, I'll have passed my higher English exam :D

Is anyone else concerned that according to Kenny Black we only have a budget to bring in one more player and that it will probably be a defender.

First we have plenty of defenders, we don't have a left sided centre back but I'm not too concerned with that and we lack a replacement left back but I would rather trust Tom Hately out of position or Halsman instead of spending limited money on cover for Hammell.

Second we only have 3 strikers. If we get an injury then we are bare bones with only Howarth, Lawless and Gary Smith which seemed to be trusting to luck. If we have such limited funds a striker should be the priority.

Actually really enjoyed that quote at the time! Perfect turn of phrase, and the first time I had heard it too

I seem to recall the term 'corridor of uncertainty' being used by cricket commentators. They meant it as the bowler landing the ball in such a place as to make the batsman unsure whether or not to play at the ball, and possibly nicking it to the wicketkeeper.

So in fitba it would refer to a dangerous ball in between the keeper and defender, with the keeper unsure about whether to come for the ball or not and the defenders scared to play at it for fear of conceding an OG.

I'd heard it before, but also love the phrase. Nearly commented that on the forum last night actually.

Entirely seperately, I'm still massively concerned with only having two proven strikers.

Now is the time where the rumours will go through the roof, everyone back in training and the agents gettings there players names banded about, not sure Murphy will actually go anywhere at present, im sure if there was a chance of him going we would of already got another striker in or if not on stand by. My hope is that he will stay for another season or at least part of and continue to develop at the rate he is presently.,

It was down to the bare bones last year.

We're probably going to have a net loss of about 4 players this summer. By 2015 we'll be down to a 7 a side mob.

i think i prefer it this way though.

ten years ago we brought in karl ready, eddie forrest, david kelly, andy dow, roberto martinez, mark brown, stephen cosgrove and neil tarrant during the summer. 8 signings all duds.

then when black became manager we brought in eric domelaux, yann soloy, dirk lehmann, frank bernhard, david ferrere and dubordeau.

14 signings in the one season and apart from the pornstar they all flopped, nae wonder we went into admin

Craggs is pretty certain of it then...?

Sounds a bit tongue in cheek but at the same time it reads a bit like you are completely discounting the youths coming through.

Half our first team's starting XI next season in Saunders, Hammell, Hutchinson, Craigan, Lasley and Murphy have come through the ranks. They all needed an opportunity somewhere along the line and so to do the dozen or so guys that will be the backup to the first team.

It remains to be seen how many can stay the course but I actually as well as a testament to the club's scouting and youth development set up think it's a positive that the bulk of our squad have come from within the club's ranks and would be delighted if that continued to be the case in the future. The club will ofcourse will always be hoping for a McFadden style player to come through and earn them big bucks in a transfer but the contributions of guys like Craigan, Hammell and Lasley all giving around a decade's worth of service is not to be understated either.

i think we were always gonna have a smaller squad than last season we couldve easily replaced the 5 or 6 average players that have left with players of a similar standard but hopefully signing 3 or 4 of a better quality will make us a better team.guys like ross and jeffers were always gonna be short term signings casagolda was a waste of time so i dont see any of them as a great loss and now there gone its upto the younger to step up and take there chance.

Explain

We were told that due to our successful cup runs and european participation that our budget would be similar to last season. We lost Sutton, Ross, Jones, Jeffers, Casagolda, Gunning, cypriot boy, Meechan. At this point in time, and i accept there is a long way till August 31st, we have brought in Law and Higdon (Devlin, if we really want to be picky). Talk of Gunning also coming back, but the noises McCall is making suggests that we'll only be bringing in one more. The issue straight away as others have said is the forward line. We've lost 3 and brought in one. We're essentially hoping that Smith and McHugh can step up to the plate. That to me isn't maintaining, that is downsizing.

The Hutchison deal was a great bit of work, but my worry is that we've signed Jennings and Craigan up to one year deals, i'd imagine especially in Jennings case, on much better terms and this in turn has had a huge impact on our budget for this season. We got to a final, semi final and finished in the top six. Realistically what are we hoping for this season? Do we put a healthy amount of cash into one year deals for Jennings and Craigan in the hope of securing a european place this season, knowing that we'll have no financial sell on from these players, or do we invest their wages in securing a few youngish players from the lower leagues in England, stick them on two/three year deals and hope to sell them on for a transfer fee ala Randolph and Humphrey.

It just seems that every year we're being squeezed and squeezed. A quick look at the back pages of last years programmes will show we had one of the smallest squads last year. This season its shaping up to be even smaller. Quality not quantity..but when your quality's sitting on the treatment table, then what do you do.

Issue for me is Andy that having watched the young boys last year, when the games actually went ahead, i'm not sure any of them are really ready to step in to a starting 11. Pollock, possibly. But with Murphy, Hutchison, it was seemless and the boys were ready. I don't see McHugh leading the line for us over the course of a few months if god forbid Murphy/Higdon are out.

Murphy is clearly a vital player for us this year. Hopefully he will be moved off the left mid role and put up front. Personnally I think mccall may be looking to change his tactics with a 4 3 2 1 formation leaving murphy out on the left wing. This would mean he may only need 3 strikers.

Problem then is who do you use on the left if murphy is injured or played up front i.e the other strikers are injured/suspended? Law? From what I have heard his best position is centre left mid, can anyone confirm this?

page/saunders crags hutch hammy

lasley jennings law

hump murphy

hig

It is this scenario that makes me believe that we need another striker. Hately has played on the left mid before but surely that is not his best position.

Should murphy go then we have to demand 1 million at least. then significant add ons for starts and goals. we are leaving boyles stewardship, moving towards fan rule with this money it would be a good start. We can then surely get in a couple of players one of which would have to be a striker.
