Need To Strengthen

If we're going to go through accies like a gypo in TK Maxx then imrie would be worth a shout.

Czerny is a shoe-in however I fear his stock has risen out of our range and budget.

To be honest, there aren't many players at Accies I'd even go near. Cerny is by far their best asset, I'd sign him but I'd imagine a team with a slight bigger wage budget i.e Hibs or Aberdeen would get first dibs. Imrie, I'd possibly take. Out of the rest of their squad the only two I even rate at all are Simon Mensing, who I think we've burned our bridges with, not a great loss anyway and Alex Neil, who is a big fish in a small pond and not a player I'd like to see us signing. The rest of their squad are utter dross and painful to watch, even by SPL standards!

5 or 6 first team players will leave & McCall will bring in loan players from the lower leagues in Britian that none of us have heard of. Some will be a success & some will be downright pish. It's the Motherwell way. The difference in a good or bad season comes down to the manager recruiting more good loanees than pish ones.

The main issue with loan deals is we make no money as a club we just pish it all away on the hope of top six finish and a decent cup run.

As a club if we are to be a success we need to either bring through youth players and tie them up to long term deals (ie Murphy) or sign quality players on a free and sell on for big bucks (ie Randolph). We have not done this since we sold Jim Paterson and now we are beginning to feel the effects of it. We will probably get a decent price for Randy (£750,000) as good goalkeepers are hard to find.

Kilmarnock are a great example. They have been brilliant this season considering they almost got relegated last season, but thats down to Mixu being very clever in the transfer market, but where does that leave them next season? These guys will be gone and they will probably finish 5th which means fuck all in the grand scheme of things. So its back to square one for the team and no plan for growth.

we need to stay away from loans and one year deals next season. there seems to be some sort of myth that jim gannon was some sort of transfer market guru but the facts are that he got the same level of financial backing as mcghee but couldn't sign us one player who will be a sellable asset for the club (even malpas managed that).

we need more signings along the lines of sutton and randolph. guys who appear to be our level but have a good chance of improving and building around. we have to get away from filling important roles in the team with loan players as it leaves you chasing your tail at the end of every season.

McGhee had a complete squad when he arrived whereas Gannon barely had a team. His stated strategy was to strike the short term balance while he worked on the longer term development of the younger players.

The reason he has a good reputation on transfers (at least with me) is that his actions backed up his words. Every single player he said he was going to sign was signed a few days later. Who knows what he would have done in the next couple of transfer windows, but based on the quality of players he did bring in, I'm sure he could have added more quality (and value) to the squad.

I'm still waiting for McGhee's big centre half.

my point is that we all thought we were downsizing last season and it turned out that we spent as much on wages as we did when we finished third. if butcher could find mcdonald and malpas mccormack surely gannon could have got us at least one creative player who might be worth something if he is transfer guru some people think he is cracked up to be.

i enjoyed having ruddy and jutkiewicz here but we must have been paying an absolute fortune for them and yassin. jenno was obviously a great signing, coke wasn't and the jury is still very much out on hateley and humphrey.

The way I see it is if the youngsters start to become more consistent/achieve their potential we might avert a crisis.

With a view to next season and youngsters...

Hutch has shown good potential, but will need to become more composed.

Murphy has really disappointed me this season after such a fine start. I expected him to have a blinder and start to fill out - it hasn't happened but I still have faith.

I've written off Saunders before but when I saw the difference between having him out and Page in against Killie I realised what an asset he could become, he has good positional sense but needs to cut out the panicky flapping he seems prone to on occasion.

The defence next year will be young - that worries me, its one of those areas you need a bit of experience (especially centre back) so if Craigan goes, and I think it might be time, we need to bring in someone with a strong head on their shoulders (rare/expensive) - I wish Hammell was a centre back.

If we lose Jennings, and Lasley starts to show his age we are in trouble - the replacements we have are squad players at best, with the exception, perhaps, of Hateley (who I find hard to assess) - our midfield, in short, has no engine/nucleus... unless Forbes and Hateley step way up.

If Sutton leaves the front line there is a heap of pressure on Murphy - he needs to start fulfilling his potential in my view, because we are so limited in what we can do there. I can't imagine Esteban is going to fill anyones boots - McHugh? I find that hard to imagine too. Up front is a huge problem.

So to surmise, yes it's a mess, the onus is on the youth - our defence seems to be showing the most potential for growth - but the cracks are starting to show everywhere else.

If we lose players, I would highlight the best centre mid and striker we can find as necessary replacements.
