Yesterday's Referee

In the wake of yesterday's incident packed encounter it perhaps not surprising that the referee's perforamance was largely overlooked. However, in my book it was one of the worst referring performances of the season characterised by a totally inconsistent display. OK there were no individual match influencing decisions but Mr McLean made a continuous catalogue of errors from start to finish. The fans, from all 3 home stands, left him in doubt what they thought and SM did likewise after the final whistle - he was so annoyed he ran onto the pitch and made for the official.

Unjustified bookings for Hutchinson and Sutton (how often are fouls given for jersey pulling let alone yellow cards?). McGuire gets off with a yellow card for lashing out at Hutchinson and almost causing him a serious injury and Pawlett gets off with a verbal ticking off for a shocker of a tackle of Gunning. A number of questionable tackles from the Dons throughout the game. No booking either for McGuire for playing football all on his own after the whistle blew. Darren Randolph warned for a limited amout of timewasting - has Mr McLean ever refereed Hamilton or St Mirren?

Finally, an interesting wee incident in the first half reminiscent of Goodwillie's goal in the Cup at Tannadice. Just outside our box an Aberdeen player just about bicycle kicks Shaun Hutchinson in the head and guess what? A foul is given.

I watched the game back on Alba and I think his booking of Hutchinson was a bit harsh but I can understand why he did because it did look like he caught the ankle first but certainly there was no doubt it was a genuine attempt to play the ball. Arguing about Sutton's booking I don't think you can. He knew we were a defender light (Gunning was off Saunders wasn't on) and they were starting a break. A wee tug on the shirt broke up the play and let us get a defender back. A good foul and yellow to pick up but the referee was bang on with that one.

Pawlett's tackle was the same as Hutchinson's in my book. A genuine attempt to play the ball that missed. So to me you can't book one and not the other and thats the kind of inconsistency that drives people bananas.

You're right he didn't book Maguire for playing on - he probably should have. He definitely should have booked Saunders for throwing the ball into the East Stand as well when we were 2-0 up but didn't.

I thought Maguire's yellow card for his push on Hutchinson was OK - don't think it was violent or dangerous enough to warrant any more.

He got too many corners/goal kick/throw in decisions wrong.

Also gave a couple of bizarre ones as fouls that I have no idea what they were for but generally his foul detection was all right; it was more his consistency with cards that seemed a bit off.

But he may not be very good but thats four times we've had him and four times we've won. I'll accept him being shit every time we have him if we keep winning!

It wasn't the push I was concerned about, Tweed. As Hutch reached the touch line he was either deliberately tripped or more likely McGuire lashed out at him with his boot - thats how it appeared to me.

They were moaning on Five Live that there were just 2 minutes injury time today at Manchester. That despite 3 subs per side. There were also 3 per side at our game. Tine Refs were told to play the correct amount or answer why. Never 5 minutes injury time and, bar a foul in the area, it almost cost us a point.

I thought yesterday he was an arrogant s.o.a.b. His decisions at times were baffling to say the least. We were on the receiving end of some right hefty challenges that never even resulted in a free kick, then he books Sutton for hee haw. :wallbash:

Spot on to the original poster. I thought he was absolutely atrocious and so did McCall who came on to have a go at him. Can't ever recall a Motherwell manager coming on to the pitch at the end to speak to the ref like that so that just shows you how bad he was.

Got to agree that he was one of the worst this season - on a par with O'Reilly. Maguire easily did enough to be booked earlier and then sent off. Continually stopped the game pointlessly. Most annoying when the ball was in Randolphs hands and he blows for offside and stops the game.

Good news on the O'Reilly front - its him on Wednesday!

Have to agree with the original poster opn this one. But then every week that goes by we seem to say/hear the same thing.

I don't for a minute think our refs are bent but hells bells they are most certainly guilty of a mixture of incompetence and inconsistency. When is the SFA going to get them in a room together and explain once and for all what is expected from them with regard to applying the laws of the game in a consistent, fair, transparent and non-discriminatory fashion? Not necessarily these concurrently of course.
