Motherwell´s Jennings arrested in betting investigation

6 October 2011

Jennings was sent off for dissent in a Scottish Premier League match against Hearts last season, an event which provoked probes into unusual betting activity prior to the fixture.

Stewart Regan, chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, released the following statement: "The Scottish FA has received notification from the Gambling Commission that the Motherwell FC player, Steve Jennings, was arrested at his home today by Merseyside Police. This follows extensive enquiries in relation to alleged betting irregularities at a Scottish Premier League match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14, 2010."

"While the investigation involves several other individuals out with Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match."

"Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course. The Scottish FA will make no further comment at this stage."

The Association of British Bookmakers, along with the SFA and SPL, announced that they would look into the alleged betting irregularities shortly after the match last December.

Reports at the time suggested that a new account had been opened in Liverpool prior to the match which had placed 500 pounds on a red card, with several other accounts making similar bets.

Couldnt have been done by people seeing ref was having a mare and a bit more than £50.

Now rooneys dad hardly as if he needs the money, very murky indeed.

Given goodwillie, o'connor and others have been allowed to continue to play with court appearances pending, jennings will surely be allowed to play as well.

In the "football world" they are totally different things though. Jennings is under investigation for a crime that brings the game into question, and could lead to match fixing charges. If Motherwell have any thoughts of him being guilty then no, he shouldn't play. He should be suspended - if possible without pay - but if Motherwell believe him then I see why nothe shouldn't be allowed to play.

Of course, there are bodies within Football that can take it out of our hands, if the Crown Office actually do press charges - guilty or not

Interesting to see the official website has removed the "Well Society " advert with Jenno and Las from when you enter the site ..now a Xmas thingy ....

I'm sure that's just a rotating advert. It bounces between various different club adverts depending upon what's on the go - 'Well Society, Christmas, Hospitality etc.

It will be interesting to see what the SPL do now, last year they asked Motherwell to suspend him (imagine if we did!!!)

he is being persecuted. imagine a scouser with a job!!!!

Last time I checked he wasn't charged, only been arrested. If he is charged then the SFA won't need to ask us to suspend him. I'm sure they could do it themselves (or get UEFA/FIFA to do it).

Which is the correct figure though? That report says prior to the match and £500 but it also says Jennings was arrested in Merseyside. Everywhere else reports Glasgow. Not saying the figures etc. aren't correct but given they can't actually agree where he was picked up I'd take any "reports" with a pinch of salt.

He deserves to be arrested for firing his man jam up some manky old scouser, which led to the birth of that potato-faced vacuous granny shagging apologist who has all the charisma of a bread van.

Come on now Eddie, don't hold back. Say what you really mean! blum3.gif

I don't see how someone like Jennings could be motivated to pull a stunt like that, put his career on the line for what would surely just be a few grand ? As much as he'd make in a couple of weeks

You could argue he's the perfect target? Plays in a league that gets a lot of coverage, and has live tv games, but in football terms is not a high earner.

A premiership or old firm player would have too little gain, and too much to lose.

He has been arrested along with another eight people and it's in relation to the Motherwell game alone. Quite perplexed as to how some people could think other games are involved when commenting on a statement that says only the M'well Hearts game was involved. facepalm.gif

As far as I'm aware he was arrested in a dawn raid, and was taken down to Liverpool first thing for questioning. I'll be surprised if the club, quite understandably, say nothing at the moment and the club's lawyers will no doubt want to have a word with Jenno and his representatives before a decision is reached.

He is innocent until proven guilty, howeve it will be interesting to see what happens as the alleged offence took place while he was carrying out his job, which makes it incomparable to anything else we've really seen before.

The statement doesn't say it's only the Hearts game involved. It says "...it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match."

That doesn't exclude the possibility of one or more English matches. It was just the SFA talking head pointing out that, from a Scottish perspective, there is only one related game.
