We looked like getting Stevenson until Hearts put their oar in after it became public knowledge. whistling.gif

We'll play it the same way we always do, keep the actual transfers schtum until the ink is dry on the contracts whilst at the same time having improved our squad(which is hardly shite in SPL terms) and will comfortably be top 5 again.

Fear not as there will be some decent players coming into Fir Park today...

So is that the level of ambition for our club. Are most 'Well fans happy if we finish 10 points above bottom.

I don't want to see high risk reckless spending but some investment in the squad will help develop the youngsters. Leanne said funds available to bring in 2 or 3 so let's see what happens.

Any investment is a risk. We have no over-draft, we have no facility for credit. If we run into debt, we go into administration.

Obviously finishing 11th is not the target, or something I'd be delighted about, but the knicker-wetting from people because we haven't signed anyone is an absolute nonsense. We're fine, we'll be fine, we'll be top half, on paper and in practice, we've got a squad good enough to finish top four. For some reason, because we've lost Jennings we're going to be relegated? Nah.

Have a feeling that we might be waiting to see who is a free agent after the deadline closes. Having funds available for two or three players is one thing, but still shopping in the very cheap end of the market so it might be the idea to pick up players who aren't in that strong a bargaining position,,,

You say uproar, I say pant wetting.

We wont be fighting it out near the bottom.

Famous last words,

Granted we have good forward players and although thin in midfield, if fit, we look decent.

I have no confidence in our defence if we lose Hutchinson and one of our full backs to injury. We already have a few youngsters padding out our first team, if we get a few injuries on top of that we will be in trouble as we have nothing and i mean NOTHING in reserve.

Not saying we will defeinitely be involved in a relegation dogfight, I'd say we're more likely to be top 6 than bottom, but if circumstances conspire against slightly we might not be as far off it as some people like to think.

In saying that, I've thought that in the past and had youngsters who have been a revelation in their first season, I'll be happy to be proved wrong again this time.

Does anyone think that the board may have looked at the rest of the SPL and thought we'll be fine with the fall back that cash would still be available in Jan if we are in any trouble?

dare say a few nutters on here think worse than that

but the board have been quite public about supporting McCall in trying to bring in players, whilst at the same time reminding all of us that we've got limits and that we'll need to sell at least one player

it was only last month that the vote on new rangers was finalised and the majority were made fully aware of the finances and backed the club, yet now look at the hankering.

but as these couple of years are all about restructuring our club to give it a sustainable future in the top league of Scottish football, I'd actually support the chance for the younger lads over signing a 'name'

a fair chunk of the money available is and has been going towards setting us up with academy status, towards the future

 Honestly, we've played what, four games? 3 draws and a win? In the midst of dealing with Champions League/Europa travels and games.

Here's something, I'll bet you whatever you want to bet that we'll finish ten points clear of whoever finishes bottom, easily.

The squad is no thinner than it has been in the past, we've lost Jennings, Craigan and Clancy, which is a blow, but besides that, we've brought in Kerr and Ramsden, Cummins has stepped up to the first team squad.

Feel free to knee-jerk away, but the squad is the same as it has been, with no difference. Given that the same spine of the squad has provided the same level of performance over the past few years, is that really a gamble?

Stop talking sense ya crazy bastard.

most well fans should be happy if we finish above bottom, but its hardly indicative of ambition

and with your second paragraph you highlight the Frankenstein nature of most Motherwell fans

I'd settle for not getting relegated every year, definitely. Anything higher than that? Fantastic. For a club of our size to be playing European football so much over the past few seasons is well above where we should, by rights, be sitting. For a team that's hardly paid a penny in transfer fees over the past few years (Hammy aside), we've done not too bad.

It's cyclical though. There will be bad times along with all these good times - enjoy it while it lasts, and just think, we could be Dunfermline.

Agreed. Although, the good times - by our standards - have been going on for a fair while now. As soon as they end and we're back in relegation dogfights, I'll never be coming on this forum again.

A lot of folk say they're happy if we don't get relegated, but I doubt the board and those in charge of finances think the same way. We budget for top six I believe, so that should be what we're aiming for regarding the quality of the team.

A club like Motherwell budgeting for top six (and a good cup run, I believe) is ridiculous though.

I think when folk are saying they would be happy with avoiding relegation in the majority of cases that's clearly a minimum expectation - particularly when we're in a period of uncertainty both on and off the park as we are just now.

I'd be happy if we avoided relegation for the next 50 odd years but that's not to say its the sum of my ambitions for the team, and don't have aspirations that we do much better than that.

So we miss out on Ryan "I'll never play for hearts again" Stevenson. We only lost 3 first team players last season, craggs, Clancy and Jenno. Craggs we knew wasn't going to last forever. Ramsden in for Clancy. No one in for Jennings. But add in the 3/4 young lads who look like making a name for themselves this year and.........what's the f***ing panic? Relegation? Come on.

As has been previously pointed out, relegation isn't even worth briefly thinking about this season. Dundee are paying the price for planning for First Division football right up until the last minute - they are absolutely terrible. Even if we have a shambles of a season, we'll still finish above Dundee.

I'm perfectly happy with our current squad. If we get to 11pm tonight without selling anyone, I'll be even happier. New faces are a bonus.

The fact folk are already wetting themselves as we sit undefeated in the SPL after four games, with sides like Dundee in the league, and a decent enough squad that isn't greatly changed from last season pretty much sums Steelmen Online up.

It's a good thing we didn't make the Europa Cup group stages, as that would inevitably impacted or league form and sent this forum into relegation panic meltdown.

If we'd made the group stages this place would be a ghost town and I'd be face down asleep in a kebab.

You missed out that we were all of about 30 seconds from going into this weekend top of the league.

Armageddon indeed.
