weeyin
Jay Cutler's burd just had a baby last week and that's what led the local news here. Bursting my tits. Sport here is a household thing, not just the dominion of fans and, generally, people want their guys to do well. A whole world of difference to Scotland, as Al B pointed out. The reason the local media loves NFL players is because there are so few teams and such a big market. So no rivalries to speak off and most cities are a one (or zero) trick pony. When there is a rivalry, the teams are kept apart so they are never in direct competition. It's smart marketing by the league, but the structure of the whole franchise business and the market for the game is so different as to be a pointless comparison with the SPL. I still doubt, however, that any Broncos fans have any love for Cutler.
Al B
Perhaps Weeyin, but surely you get the point being made in that in the States (which was an arbitrary country I chose, could have been anywhere), there's an inherent internal pride that comes out particularly in things like sports, whether it's national, state or city...whereas in Scotland there is a general dislike of anyone who may seem anything other than the ordinary man on the street. A "make sure you know you're no better than me" attitude, regardless of whether they are part of your own team/city/country....often more-so if they are! It's not just confined to sports, the attitude to perceived success in Scotland doesn't lend itself to celebration of it, or excitement from it. The more successful someone is at anything, the more they need to be brought down. As long as that's the case, sport in this country won't flourish because success is only seen as a good thing until you get it. A gold medal winner in any other country would be treated as a national hero if they were seen in public with their medal, in Scotland they would be treated like an arrogant prick who better not think he's better than everyone else just because he won a gold medal. vespa
Free tickets for primary school children in the surrounding areas, get them all corralled into one section and get a few of the older boys from the section up the end of the east stand to take turns sitting with them weekly to create some atmosphere. It might annoy people short term but if we get them hooked from a young age it can only be a good thing. thats a great shout, get the kids in free and get our young eastend stand guys to give them a great season get them hooked , the stands are sitting empty anyway and they will buy tops and stuff from the shop well fans for the future
Busta Nut
I think it means the club need to have more stewerds/police though does it not depending on the group of unsupervised children in attentance If the tickets are given to the school it is up to the schools to provide escorts for the kids, the stewards/police will be unchanged (unless 4000 weans turned up)

To my mind it has to be worked in with parents bringing the kids, I ended up with 24 tickets to dispose of one time cos the head couldn't get any staff to attend the game, which still meant 24 kids got to see the game but it would be 24 kids who would normally be going probably which isn't exactly the point of the exercise. weesacs
Big problem across the board here is that football is no longer the only show in town. There are far more attractions away from football available to punters so spending aprrox £40( travel, ticket, refreshment etc) on a day out to watch a fairly mundane product really just isn't a viable prospect for a lot of folks. Throw in the saturation tv coverage of the top leagues throughout Europe and it's easy to see why kids' heads are turned watching the top players night in night out then trying to persuade them the SPL or SFL is great entertainment. its Friday - and tomorrow is a big day (any day is a big one when supporting the Well!!) was looking forward to going to the game with the wee man - then I had to think twice about it. £27 plus whatever it costs me to get there, isn't exactly enticing me to go (fair play to Killie though for letting in U12s for a fiver) - but £22 to see an SPL game (especially this one which is historically pants) is too much. i've just spent a fortune on trips for me and the mrs to Athens and Levante plus over £150 on tickets alone. i've not even bought my season ticket!!!! had to pay in to the St J game which I haven't had to do in about 20yrs!! there is a temptation for me to miss this one and just watch the start of the premiership! the point im trying to make above, is that currently we have a smallish fan base - and the money seems to continually come from the same small group. If we can expand that group, no matter what it takes, it should be what we are trying to achieve. Football must be made more affordable - but how can we do this without cutting ourselves short? i suggested a while ago, there should be an away season ticket - i still stand by that. I think it would be a definite attraction to alot of fans. does anyone know how many schools are actually in Motherwell?? if schools are not helping out, then what other groups can we target? local football teams??? (although you would need to hope their coach is presumably a well fan)
