Report in the Herald today has Higdon quoted as saying that if McCall stays then its pretty certain he would stay as well. However, the Scotsman reports thatHigdon is certain to move on. Journalists? You shouldn't believe a word they say or write. dry.gif

Do you get the impression that some of them are actually pleased at all of this?

Just as along as we avoid any of the following (not listed in any particular order):

Jim JefferiesJimmy CalderwoodJohn HughesCraig LeveinMark McGheeStephen CraiganChris SuttonBarry FergusonTommy CraigMcCall - the one that was at Partick, Falkirk etc.Gus McPhersonBobby Williamson

What about John Collins? Was doing a terrific job at Hibs until he left on account of the chairman backing a few moaning git players as opposed to backing the manager. Also did a fair job at Livingston before leaving. IMO well worth consideration.

any examples in the past 25 years?

Sure.

Jim Jefferies who was managing Berwick Rangers about as late on as 1990 I think and by the turn of the next decade had won the cup with Hearts and was managing Bradford in the English top flight.

Owen Coyle started his managerial career as co-manager with Falkirk and has gone on to manage two sides in the English top flight.

There's the trio from Cowdenbeath. The aforementioned bawbag Levein who started at Cowdenbeath and went on to manage in the Scottish top flight and took charge of the Scottish national team.

Danny Lennon won two successive promotions with Cowdenbeath, went to St Mirren where he has lead them to a national trophy for the first time since 1987.

Mixu Paatelainen started at the Blue Brazil and has gone on to manage two Scottish sides in the SPL and is, or was, manager of the Finnish national team.

I certainly don't disagree with your assertion that the jump from managing an Alloa or Cowdenbeath is a huge leap to move to where we currently are as runners-up and Europe bound.

But there are examples of managers who have gone on to have pretty decent careers from rather modest beginnings so I wouldn't automatically dismiss anyone without a closer look at what they have to offer.

Levein is the only who went from a part time club straight to relative success and it was at a club he was a club legend at which was also merrily spending it's way to oblivion (hearts were 20m in debt before vlad took over)

Managing Alloa and managing motherwell are two totally different jobs. We wouldn't go for a junior manager but to be honest I don't think there is much difference between part time SFL clubs and junior teams.

Stuart McCall to be named SPL manager of the year, thus attracting the interest of the bigger clubs in England, working with shoestring budgets (Which is probably tens times the amount he is working with at Motherwell by the way. He is likely to join Murphy at Sheffield United, and take Law, Randolph, and Humphrey with him. Watch this space

I think Owen Coyle he knows his stuff down in English football could get us a few loan players from Bolton and maybe get us a few frees from down there

As a manager with recent EPL experience, not to mention Championship promotion and an FA cup semi final on his CV there is absolutely no chance we could afford him. He's only been out of work since October last year, won't be long before a job comes up in the Championship for him.

Has he left yet ?

No, but if he's offered it, he'd be off his head to turn it down. He's put out a winning team that plays attractive football and still crowds aren't going up. He's taken us to second place. Other than a cup win, what else can he achieve here?

Sheffield Utd is probably the highest level of job you'll get offered down South by doing well in the SPL (can't see Everton coming in for him, can you?). But if he does well there, like Owen Coyle, a bigger club may come in...

John Collins seems a bit too much of a designer label ponce for fir park.

I think we're better suited to McCall and butcher types who run about in a pair of samba and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty.

We would be the fittest team in the league under Collins. He's mental that way.

just seen the bbcs saying he's cutting short his holiday to have talks with them... changed his tune, sure he said a few weeks ago they'd have to either talk to him before he goes or wait till he came back

Sounds like whoever gets the job will have to work on a tight budget.

Will surely still be bigger than most clubs in League 1 though.

From the Sheffield Star

Sheffield United have told managers vying to succeed Danny Wilson at Bramall Lane that they will be expected to adopt a more imaginative approach in the transfer market, writes James Shield.

The Star revealed earlier this month that Karl Robinson, Stuart McCall and the Football Association's former head of elite development Gareth Southgate feature on a short-list of names which also includes first team coach Chris Morgan.

United could hold face to face talks with Robinson later this week providing permission is granted by MK Dons while Motherwell yesterday acknowledged they have received an approach regarding the availability of McCall.

However, with chief executive Julian Winter recently insisting last season's League One play-off semi-finalists must become a "sustainable" business, applicants are being told their recruitment plans must focus on delivering value for money as well as sporting talent to South Yorkshire.

"The idea is to try and concentrate on bringing in the best people available rather than the most expensive in terms of fees or the biggest names," a source confirmed last night.

"People who are proven performers at this level because Sheffield United is still a big draw."

McCall signed a new two year deal with the Scottish Premier League runners-up in March.

Robinson is understood to be on a rolling contract at stadium:mk although his terms of employment are also likely to include a release clause.

Wilson parted company with United six weeks ago following 23 months in charge.

Gary Mac ready made replacement.

Gary Mac can bolt. He's been a ready made replacement for every one of our departed managers for years and has either been not good enough or not keen enough. No thanks.
