Brazilian
I think Hutchinson..... For me, although he's a good defender, he hasn't really developed as a player as well as I would have liked. He has good parts to his game but I don't think he's improved noticeably in the bad parts of his game. He still makes the same mistakes you'd put down to 'inexperience' a couple of seasons ago - he has the worst disciplinary record at the club, he gives away too many fouls in dangerous positions, he still charges out of position and misses tackles leaving a gapping hole in defence. I agree that we have to deal with it. most of us will, but would take much more pleasure if he made a move like Murphy but trying to turn this back to Motherwell, and I'm not meaning this as a criticism more a reality, as I see it. its often commented that players don't progress as much as expected at our club, I agree they don't progress to their individual capability, but most are where I expect them to be. they need to move on to progress more , and go to clubs with specialist coaches and systems in place to bring them on as individuals, the way I see it , is we have one coach and a manager trying to bring on 20-25 players. I don't see how they two people can develop individuals and prepare a team, that's just how it is as I see it, over they ears we've also had various sports science coaches etc But can McCall or Black make Hutch a better player beyond what we have? maybe Butcher could have? But would Butcher have got so much out of Lasley and Carswell etc All our coaches have had great strengths but I think, we have too limited an income to make the next jump and have the extra staff in place to add some real value to our players all our boys develop with game time , with more experienced pro's passing on knowledge , whilst many themselves are doing coaching training. its works successfully to a level. as for the negatives in Hutchinsons game, I think many of the traits of his game you refer to , could actually positives given some development, when you look at the situations, its usually when he is taking on responsibility beyond his experience and covering for others, or beign one of only a few players trying to keep us in a game when others have thrown in towel, not always the best decisions as it turns out, but I'd rather have a player like Hutch who will run through a brick wall for his team mates , that some of the others we've had who will happily hide when the going gets tough

ropy
So, if Hutch goes, is it Ramsden in the middle and Reid at right back with Kerr as cover for both?
Brazilian
would Reid still be here? was he not only on a short term deal until summer after an injury crisis, boys done OK but not to the point where Id say better than the players we have under contract would it not be Ramsden RB, Cummins, Murray, Kerr, Mcmanus or whoever has deals in the middle? Welldaft Mk1
I think Reid has done enough and shown enough to be considered for a deal. I thought he had a great game today. No nonsense defending. Is he better than Kerr or Ramsden. Kerr probably has not had enough game time, but I would say he is as good as. Ramsden I like but is certainly injury prone and may be better cover for central defence.

Simon Ramsden is a solid defender, who I like, but he's injury prone and not getting any younger. Craig Reid is good in defence and on the overlap. He can also play in the centre of the defence. I'd be very disappointed if we let him go at the end of the season.
Mad Dog
McManus is also out of contract in the summer, with Hutchy leaving we really need his experience to help the likes of Kerr, Cummins and Murray. If he wants to stay with us, of course.
Ya Bezzer!
Simon Ramsden is a solid defender, who I like, but he's injury prone and not getting any younger. I agree Ramsden has been a good signing, bit of an unsung hero for me but I think I'm right in saying he is 33 on his next birthday and he has had a few injuries. We can't really afford to be sentimental when we can only afford to carry a small squad. I think Reid has fitted in very well, he's only been with us for a short period but I've been reasonably impressed. Highly mobile, gets up and down the wing and unlike a lot of players like that he looks like he is a decent defender as well. If he keeps up the standard of performance he had today he would be a very decent squad player at the very least. McManus is also out of contract in the summer, with Hutchy leaving we really need his experience to help the likes of Kerr, Cummins and Murray. If he wants to stay with us, of course. I'm convinced McManus will be here next season but I think we will need to bring someone in because I'm not convinced any of those other guys are ready for a first team central defensive spot. Cummins I don't rate, Kerr hasn't really played in central defence, Murray is just starting his first team career.
Goggles & Flippers
I know this is a bit "my mate heard from a guy in a pub" but I did hear from a friend that a former youth academy director has put in a good word for him with his new employer. Just out of interest, with McCall having previous with Sheffield Utd, did he help secure the interview, if so, was it because he's a nice guy or to help facilitate an exit of someone he didn't rate? GazzyB
Some turnaround for Reid. From struggling to get a deal with a team bottom of the First Division to potentially playing European football next year!
joewarkfanclub
Be sad to see Hutch go. He seems to be a decent big lad and has been very good for us over the piece. Id be disappointed to see him go to SEVCO as I was with Law. Mostly because I think he can do better and by doing so will damage the high regard he is held in by a lot of our support. Whether he needs to be replaced depends on whether McManus signs on again. If he does I dont think we need to do anything. Reid is proving a decent right back so Ramsden moves into the centre and Kerr is there as cover which should buy us time to decide whether Cummins or Murray are good enough. (Talking of which, has anyone been keeping tabs on how Cummins and McHugh are getting on?) Not a position we need to be worrying about. Goalkeeper and right midfield (depending on what Ainsworth does) would be my priority and tying up some of the out of contracters.
Lobey_Dosser
Cummins doesn't get off the bench for Dundee. McHugh starting for QoS but it's the boy Reilly that scores the goals for them. If McManus stays, we should be looking to develop a young centre half alongside him. Reid has done very well but I doubt he's more than stop gap material. I would like to see a new fullback in the summer, someone that can bomb up and down the wing all day. If we are going to build our team around Vigurs we need players running off him and hitting the bye line.
Tweed
I was on holiday during the week and missed this story breaking. Without doubt, Hutchinson has stagnated at Motherwell. We can discuss the whys but I think it is fair to say he is not going to improve any further with us and if he wants to become a better player he needs to move on. However, I don't think that moving to a team in a league below us is going to improve the player, although we have to accept that money can talk. I think it would be a mistake for his development to go to Rangers, for the next two years he is not going to get any challenge he hasn't had with us. However, the problem for him is that he maybe hasn't been good enough for a good English side to come knocking. If he stays here, well and good but I don't think he will further himself. Catweazles ring piece
Shaun Hutchinson is aware that this is his time to cash in as far as contracts go. However, the big yin is settled and that in itself is a major factor in the outcome of any move. His agent could call at any time with links to various clubs, so he won't necessarily know anything until negotiations are under way. However, The Rangers story may have him in a dilemma? This move wouldn't require massive upheaval for him and at the same time, reward him with the cash benefits. The downside is The Rangers scenario!! I just hope he gets good offers and picks wisely, as the potential is there to go on to better things.

We need some more pace in the side and the Ainsworth "position" needs to be addressed. We're not too badly off for strikers with Moore and Erwin coming through. texanwellfan
Maybe a thread all on it's own but I think we sould get McCall on a longer term contract. I know he has some shortcomings but I think he handles players well and his personality helps attract players to fir park. He does handle the media well also. He likes being here and the way the club us run, I'd be hard pressed to think of a manager i would like to replace him with. I think he has way more positive attributes than negative ones and if nothing else having him on a longer term contract either provides stability or a better chance of some decent compensation from any other club that wants him.

milo
Totally agree re McCall. Was speaking to McManus at Lasleys dinner last night and McCall was a major, if not defining, factor in McManus signing for Motherwell I was told. As an aside McManus had nothing but the highest praise for McCall and Motherwell in general. Ainsworth said the same.
Kmcalpin
Any idea who is out of contract at the end of the season? Lee Hollis, Lionel Ainsworth, Steve Hammell, Faddy, Shaun Hutchinson, Stephen McManus and Craig Reid. Anyone else?

superward
Aye, looks the case. If we dont have to slash our budget by a huge amount and can keep salaries around current levels I can see us keeping everyone we want to except Hutchy. Hammell, Las, Reid, Ainsworth, Hollis and Stewart wont be hard to deal with. McManus and Faddy I think will sign too. They have been good for us but not amazingly brilliant to command loads of offers from elsewhere. From what they said when joining and soundbites through the season it would have to be either much much more cash and/or a bigger club than most in spl who would also guarantee them games. Would be great for once to go into europe with a fairly settled squad!
