Ya Bezzer!
John Sutton's 2 goals last night equaled Stevie Kirk's 63 Premier League goal record, making him the joint top Motherwell goalscorer over our 30 year top league stretch since 1985/86 and possibly since league recontruction in 1975/76. Unfortunately Willie Pettigrew straddled the 1970's reconstruction period and I'm not sure how many he scored in the old and new league systems. He scored 80 overall, does anyone have individual season tallies for Pettigrew? Anyway, here's Sutton's 63 league goals 1. 23/08/2008 - Dundee Utd2. 30/08/2008 - Hibernian3. 13/09/2008 - Celtic4. 27/09/2008 - St Mirren5. 05/10/2008 - Falkirk6. 28/02/2009 - Inverness C. Busta Nut
I hate how the changes to the structure start to render history as almost non existant. It should be top flight goals. end of. Well in big sutty though.
steelboy
I really hope we extend his contract in the summer. If McDonald doesn't hang around I think we could make a decent partnership out of Erwin and Sutton with Johnson out wide. When he joined he was just a poacher but he's turned himself into a leader and one of the hardest working players i've seen in claret and amber. Al B
Some absolute peaches in there as well that fly in the face of the "penalty box poacher" tag. Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone, and a left foot volley on the turn at Ibrox spring to mind. Also his best performance i've seen was the 8-1 game against Flamurtari (which if memory serves, he didn't even get on the scoresheet?), where he was 100% the reason we steamrollered it...absolutely everything went through him, he ran the show that day. It's funny to think the highest amount of goals scored in total by any Motherwell player in 40 years....Big Higgy scored half of that in one season. (loosely...obviously including cup goals). Big Wispy Flossy
I really hope we extend his contract in the summer. .I don't purely because he can't play in a team that presses high up the park and one that defends from the front, nor is he a type that links play particularly well. The rumours regarding his salary are pretty scary too. But theres no doubting he is a very good goalscorer. I'm pretty sure the renewal of his contract will divide fans views
texanwellfan
Money aside since i have no clue about fact or rumorurs, I owuld keep him. He is a goal scorer, and if pressing high up the field will be our plan A just recall all the whining on here about McCall not having a plan B. edit: plus he's handsome
weeyin
The guy's a goal scorer as he proves time and time again; even when he isn't firing on all cylinders. I'd definitely be happy if we kept him as he gives us options and I'm sure Moore and Erwin can learn a lot from him. If there is any chance of keeping Skippy, though, I fear one of our strikers will be released. Not sure Skippy will be sticking around though. Pepper
I'm staggered anyone would want to get rid of Sutton, but I'm biased as I love the big handsome bastard!

Waldo
I'm staggered anyone would want to get rid of Sutton. Because there are a lot of people who know HeeHaw about football. Very good goalscorers are rare and Johnny Handsome is one.
fizoxy
With Lasley, hammell, and mick signed up for next season, I can see value in keeping Sutton as part of an experienced core of players to help bring on the young ones. Stay or go, he probably deserves a bit more credit than he gets.
Spiderpig
He is as slow as a week in the jail...but he scores goals on a regular basis give him decent service and he will score more than he misses. If he wants to stay then we should give him a new deal he has earned it
Andy_P
I wonder if the experienced players like Sutton, Pearson and McDonald are giving Baraclough something to think about but personally it would not surprise me if none of the three of them are with us next season. The budget that we're operating with now is not going to be the same as what the manager will be working with next season for one thing. And tied in with that of course is that the focus of the club is now meant to be about developing our own/bringing in youngsters with potential. I may well be wrong but I would imagine that come the summer both Pearson and McDonald will have shown enough in their time back with us to have raised their profiles sufficiently to achieve deals acceptable to them. Even if they were amenable to taking what I would anticipate would be reduced terms, where does re-signing thirty somethings fit in with selling on at a profit? Sutton is marginally different in that he isn't trying to re-establish his profile in Scottish football, but the point still stands that having, I would suspect, taken a cut to come back here in the first place even if a deal was offered is he likely to consider another cut when other teams will I'm sure be keen get someone with his scoring record on board. I could easily see him at somewhere like Firhill or back at Dens next season - which would be sad. However I don't want to end my post on a negative when the thread is about celebrating one of our finest goalscorers of recent years. He's not everyone's cup of tea but our team have clearly benefited from his presence over a number of years as his goalscoring record shows. Haggischomper
To develop our youngsters we are gonna need an experienced head or two around them. I'd like to think we could keep Pearo but reckon Skippy and possibly Sutton would be gone
Inthebasement
Sutton's an old school back post number 9 and so can be awkward to accommodate in the modern game. I think he is showing now what he showed time and again in his first spell with us - he doesn't need to be first choice striker to be a regular scorer. weeyin
I think we can take it as read that McHugh will be gone. Scored for fun in the U20s, but doesn't seem to be able to cut it in the first team. Skippy and Sutton would be great assets - but only if we can stay in the top flight. Doubt we'll see Skippy next season, though.
