How long do you think it takes?

Or you don't know and you just posted for the craic?

As for your last comment - absurd beyond belief. A typical example of someone who hasn't a clue what they are talking about jumping in with two feet.

Email is the Holy Grail of Internet marketing. I bet everyone reading this post sees emails every day from companies they have bought from in the past, airlines, etc.

And guess why they do it, go on, guess?

It's to remind their previous customers ( fans ) that they are still there, and what news/new deal there is to entice them.

And guess what? It works - and that's why they keep doing it.

But here we go again - someone who doesn't know what they are talking about slides into a conversation and derails it with nonsense.

Fantastical that you think email marketing doesn't drive customers.

Whilst trying too hard and failing at being a smart arse, you aren't very good at reading things over are you?

Try again and see if you can spot your mistake before I give you a good dressing down. I would be extremely concerned if someone like yourself that continues to jump in with both feet whilst not really knowing what they are dribbling about was in charge of a marketing department.

I'll be in Scotland for six days in December. If a mod wants to meet so I can show them how to do this I'm happy to do so.

If you have the time and inclination why not contact the clubs guy who deals with fan engagement - your knowledge may help him.

As for the email, this could possibly be something he could do using quotes from not just this forum but others also - as they are public forums I'd imagine there is no issues there.

So fundamental that when I showed the two relevant threads to my three Internet marketing expert pals last night they burst out laughing.

Do you have any idea how important email still is? It's the Holy Grail of the Internet.

Either your mates haven't got an absolute clue what they are talking about or your are talking utter shite.

Going for the latter.

Steelmenonline is not a business, the only product we have is providing a platform for discussing Motherwell and other nonsense. We're pretty much self sustaining in terms of hosting and support (numpty, I'll look into that email query) Administration and moderation is voluntary and everyone apart from Andy_P does a good job. Andy_P does a great job.

Why are you interested in helping? Why is this help only offered publicly? You know, 20 years ago there was a thriving Motherwell FC mailing list, it evolved from the exiles club and was the only show in town until Fir Park corner appeared, which led to WTFC.net and the mailing list pretty much died on it's arse around 2001'ish.

What we really need is a mobile app to push notifications of MFC news that isn't twitter or facebook.

I'm interested in helping because I'm a fan who wants to see a stable, well supported club. Read this - I could send you 100 links like this -

Email is easily number one. By a country mile.

If I thought it was time consuming and difficult for you or the forum I wouldn't bring it up.

If you read that link and think it's BS then fair enough. Horse to water.

If you can see the benefit to the forum, to the fans, in particular the waivering fans, to the turnstiles at Fir Park, to the Well Society, and to the future of our club then even better.

Don't listen to the idiots on this thread. They don't need to subscribe.

This idea of "this is what I do blah blah," - who gives a fuck what you do? Experts are constantly split-testing and tweaking. have millions upon millions of emails. We can see who is opening their emails. We can see the unsubscribe rate. Of course we can see the sign up rate. We can see what campaigns have worked best then assess why. They even know what's the best time of day and day of week to send the email - and what is the best frequency.

It's a whole industry of real-time data analysis.

And this forum can have it free.

But to be honest I'm sick of the moon howlers. When these characters become the majority the forum is doomed. I watched a 16 year old forum with a 100,000 members be switched off three weeks ago. Switched off due to packs of howlers. Same happened to Thorntree, the howlers won again.

Read this thread and count the amount of personal attacks. If this is the kind of forum you want then carry on. Any decent mod or forum owner would be wiping flames out.

So look to yourself and your oft passive aggressive mod team who not only allow threads to degenerate into meltdowns - you fan the flames.

What are you going to do it about it?

Do you think publicly attacking the forum moderation team is going to make us all read your link and we'll ooh and ah at the analysis then beg for your help?

I just checked my email account, it's pretty well organised with message rules, I'd lay bets I'm not the only person to do this, there are currently 6000 unread emails, a high percentage of those are marketing emails or 'upcoming events' and even a few 'What's happening on... forum' type of mails, most of which I did sign up to get.

I'll say this again, we're not a business, we don't live or die by forum engagement or product sales. It's a place where folk come and talk about Motherwell and any other nonsense if they like, we rarely produce content and these days rarely have the scoop on news concerning Motherwell, the flashpoints are transfer window and matchday. Social media has taken over as a more personal version of compost corner.

Personally, sadly for me work and personal issues have been consuming my life for the last year plus. I do my best to at least get time to take a decent look at the forum once every few days, even if I don't always post.

As I am not getting to many games I don't comment on those games I haven't been to. I think this year, I have been to 4, maybe 5.

I made the game on Saturday but only because I got a call from the Well Society to say I had won hospitality in the centenary, made it an easy call to say yes or no to the overtime I was asked if I could do.

Although the overtime I will be doing between now and Xmas is financially good for me but I can feel the claret and amber drain from my blood........ hence why days like Saturday become mportant to me.

While I am working during game time, I tend to have Twitter, Mixlr and the bbc websites open continuosly checking in on our game and what is happening around, This site very rarely gets looked at during the game these days as the users on the site use other social media to talk about the game as it's going on. That's fine, time has moved on since this site was founded and the same as everything else we all grow in different ways and things that were once important get replaced. However the site does still have it's purpose and if that's to let of steam after the game or to praise Moulty for playing like Suarez then so be it.

If you look you can still find snippets in advance of what's happening in the club.

OK, I'll bite...

First of all your article is more than 18 months old using figures a further year old. It argues that email marketing is still relevant not that it is "easily number one by a country mile". It is still relevant, but has been on a steady decline year on year for the past decade. Ironically, your link is from a site pedalling email marketing solutions so you have essentially shared a skewed, biased sales pitch to support your argument. No doubt found from a google search.

Since you are an amazing internet guru you will know that email marketing can be tracked. Depending on the industry, you will be looking at a 6-11% average open rate for non-subscribed users, and 27-36% for subscriber users. Click rates for the former are below 1% on average, with the later only at 4%.

If we only had something that could let users who want info emailed to them to keep them up to date like an RSS feed or that that they could opt in too?!

And you are very much mistaken if think you don't need someones permission to "subscribe them" to your email. You can make it part of any sign up but by law must include an opt out. Sending unsolicited marketing emails can (and often does) lead to fines for the business.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I know for a fact a lot of folk on here do know exactly what they are talking about when it comes to this matter. I have worked in various marketing roles over the last 12 years, at an executive level for the past four. I'm CIM accredited, I do freelance work in digital marketing solutions and have even lectured on digital marketing on numerous occasions. Fair to say it's my bread and butter.

And all that experience tells me your are talking absolutely nonsense! You have had an idea that you are desperately trying to justify by frantically googling and digging yourself deeper. Put the shovel down and move onto your next crusade.

What are you going to do it about it?

There's basically 3 options when it comes to moderation.

1) Low touch, depending on the posters to keep each other in check

2) High touch, which relies on a full time team of moderators reading every post as soon as it appears and moderating as they see fit

3) Pre-moderated, where every post is put into a queue until they are approved and published

Number 1) is really the only workable option for a site like this.

As for the moon howlers (btw, what happened to not liking abuse?) they have been killing groups, sites and services since the September that Never Ended. If there was a simple way to eliminate them, billion dollar companies would have found it by now.
