I hate using the term, ‘punching above our weight’, however, in the halcyon days when we were finishing 3rd or 2nd, we were doing just that. In the last two seasons St Johnstone have been situated above us in the league. And I would now suggest that they are replacing us as the new ‘punching above their weight’ champions. They are now the standard by which I judge our weekly performances. My reasoning behind this is that they probably have a similar yearly budget to us. However, they recently appear to be having a greater week in, week out success.

So what is Tommy Wright doing that Mark McGhee isn’t? Is he a better tactician? Is he better in the transfer market? Is he a better man manager? Or, is he due for a fall from grace? Whilst he hasn’t attained the giddy heights of 2nd or 3rd, he has at least delivered some silverware to Perth in his tenure. Something we have not achieved since the days of Tommy McLean. They are currently joint 5th in the league with 31 points, although they have played a game more than us.

It just comes down to players in the end.

St. Johnstone can put out Alston, Wotherspoon, Davidson, Swanson, Paton, Liam Craig and Chris Millar in midfield. Pick any 4 out of the 7 and its better than any midfield we can put out.

St. Johnstone have also tended to have a different recruitment approach, generally bringing in proven players at this level - Easton, Foster, Alston, Swanson, Shaughnessy etc, they all played in this league before.

Sell on potential is probably not that great but overall they tend to get less garbage.

I suppose we are gambling on selling an unknown player on, rather then relying on the tried and tested pro. However, we do still have a few experienced premiership players in our squad, such as McManus, Skippy, Lasley, Hammell, Samson and McFadden. You could also include Ainsworth in that list as he is certainly not new to this level.

I posted this back in March in a different thread, but if anyone is in any doubt what our standing in the SP(F)L is since its inception and how we measure up, here it is again.

We have been relegated twice. Been in the relegation spot twice, but saved due to reconstruction and the all-seater stadium rule. Finished one place above relegation 4 times and avoided relegation by winning a play-off once.

Our combined average position is 6.97 (without adjusting for the fact some seasons were 10 team leagues and others 12)

In 10 team leagues, our average position is 7.06
In 12 team leagues, our average position is 5

For stats junkies, our Median position is 7.5 and Mode is 8 (which means we have finished 8th more than any other position)

Our position in Div 1 are not included in the stats.

we're a solid middle of the road Premiership Team

The same could be said about both Hibernian and Dundee United, and they were relegated to the championship. It was different for St.Mirren as they regularly flirted with the drop. And possibly could drop even further. Who knows what could happen to us if we suffered the same fate.
