I’d take a fully fit Leigh Griffiths for the rest of the season, Alexander would do well with him.

I think a move to Fir Park has the potential to benefit Griffiths in the same way that coming to us benefitted Tony Watt.

What a croc of shit. Alexander will not go anywhere near that train wreck...we would need to be desperate and in freefall to even think about taking on a massive project that is LG..no one doubts his ability but he self destructs everywhere he goes. Not even remotely similar to the TW scenario and to compare the two is laughable

Yeah I would agree with that, if it was loss of form or such I would have been delighted to give him a chance but the guy has had to many issues the past few years, he was supported though his mental health break at Celtic but since his return he seems to make the headlines every few months for the wrong reasons and he hasn't exactly set the heather on fire at Dens.

Sad to see Tony Watt go tbh, when he signed I thought he would do a decent job for us in the short term but for two years he played consistenly well considering his struggles at Hearts and St Johnstone, it was also great seeing him get on the goal trail more consistently this season, what annoys me is I remember in a few of his interviews that he pointed out how delighted he was at Motherwell and their was no point chasing a couple of hundred pounds elsewhere. I don't know if Dundee Utd are paying him a pretty penny or it's he just can't settle down somewhere, he'll have played for more clubs than Paul Kinnaird before he retires. It'll be interesting to see how his move turns out, hopefully a repeat of Nick Blackman heading to Aberdeen.

Griffiths has well documented off-the-pitch problems that he clearly hasn't been addressing. While I have some sympathy with that, until he takes dealing with them seriously, he's not going to succeed at any club. Unfortunately, that doesn't look like happening any time soon.

Dundee was the perfect opportunity for him to show his progress, but all he managed to do was show nothing has changed.

It speaks volumes that Dundee wanted to cut his loan short whilst Celtic wanted to extend it. A unique loan situation I think.

Dundee Courier reports Watt's fee as being £100,000. I don't necessarily believe that though.

If that was correct, Motherwell want their head looked. It had to be £250k, to make it worth our while to sell at this stage, and to a rival.

I am of the belief that if someone signs a pre-contract I wouldnt want them to play again so I think anything received for them to go is worth it and think £100k is good, although I get that it could be seen as bighting off your nose to spite your face.

We didn’t have that bargaining strength. Before we see some more heads gone and wild takes - being current top scorer was an irrelevance.

There's certainly multiple factors to consider.

Despite what GA said about playing him, I get the feeling TW might have been on the bench more often than not if he stayed. In which case, it was tying up a wage.

Also, if GA didn't think he had adequate cover in the striking department, it may have been a different story regarding his release.

GA also mentioned they had been aware of the possible situation since the summer and always have counter-signings planned.

If there is another signing planned, even if it's not a direct replacement, getting money now might help move things along.

Finally, GA and the club might be of a similar opinion to some on here that TW won't be as a big a goal threat at Utd as he was here.

It would have been good if TW had waited until the summer to announce his move, but while I'd have liked him to stay, I'm less concerned about losing him that I was about losing Louis Moult, as I feel we are better placed to cope without him. Time will tell.

I guess if he’s one of our top earners and wasn’t going to be playing then £100k and him off the wage bill is reasonable.

I’m fine with the club making a decision either way. They went this route and it may or may not turn out to be the best choice, we will just have to wait till end of season and see.  Regardless, I won’t criticize them if Watt turns out to be a goal machine at utd but I’m hoping not.

His move was discussed on the last open goal podcast and one of the guys said Alexander told him he was free to leave in the summer. Tony always spoke really highly and consistently about Robinson which he’s never done about Alexander so I wonder if they weren’t overly fond of each other

Watt never kicked a ball at Airdrie in the cup game when he was also trying to work his ticket. The fee isn't great but the value from not having a disruptive influence around the dressing room might be.

As for The Thumb. A gambling addict who socialises with gangsters. It's a no. Even him living in Bothwell is too close for comfort. Hopefully he gets a move to Peterhead or Cove.

Not sure who’s memory is playing tricks - yours or mine emoji23.png. Definitely won 1-0 at Firhill (Willie Watson header), but think the game finished 0-0 at Fir Park. Don’t remember a leg break, but I’m sure Sam Goodwin got sent off after about a minute.

You may well be right about 0-0 and well_said may also be right about John Arrol, although for some reason Herriot stuck in my mind.  I'm sure some results scholar will set us all right soon. I have a mental picture of the Watson header in my failing mind, but I may already have entered The Matrix.

A persistent story re the Goodwin sending-off right at the start was that when he  was summoned by the referee after the tackle, he said, "Aw ref, you're no going to book me already?" The latter reputedly replied, "I'm doing better than that, Sam. I'm sending you off." Something else I can't remember is his name :D.

I also have a memory that the replay had been previously called off for fog because I turned up at Firhill, having walked from the city centre to the ground, only to discover it was off.

Ah, here's nursie coming with my medication.........

Of course we had the bargaining strength. Dundee United need him now, not at the end of the season. We could have quite easily kept him on our books until the summer, so the strength was on our side.

Behave. To think the club held the aces is folly. The theory you think it’s true because you believe it to be doesn’t align with how it works. There would be an optimum fee, that’s been realised. Club seldom get these decisions wrong.
