If it is Moult, then I think the only ways the paperwork can go through are either (1) the deal was actually done last night, with the medical completed down the road with Louis still in England, and they wanted to wait until he’s actually in Scotland to make the announcement, or (2) he’s negotiating an exit from Burton, so he can sign for us today as a free agent

I’m sure you need to be a free agent before the window closes to be allowed to register for another club outwith the window.

Do you have some insight into the legal negotiations between the clubs, player, agent, league rules or are you just throwing out a kneejerk reaction to journo talk?

I am just throwing out a kneejerk reaction to journo talk.

But that said it just seems a fair bit of a pullava to try and sign a 30 y/o injury prone striker on a loan deal.

The English window closes today.

I don't know whether a Scottish club can sign someone who was in contract when the Scottish window shut or not but it is a possibility.

From ESPN talking about England:

Clubs in all leagues will still be able to sign players as free agents after the deadline, and as long as they are not officially attached to any club on Thursday, Sept. 1.
