The idea of the guy who couldn't get a look-in when Kelly was having his worst season being our new number one gives me the fear.

It's always been the case in football that managers will rarely drop their first choice keeper for dips in form. It doesn't say much, good or bad, about their backup other than being a backup keeper requires a mentality that outfield players don't possess.

The plus side of second and third choice keepers struggling to win a starting place is that there are a number of good ones available looking for first team options.

Yeah, but usually, decent backup keepers who the club wishes to "keep sweet" are at least given the cup games to play in and so on. Was Oxborough ever given that beyond the first two in the group stages?

I don't remember much about him, but didn't he concede three against Queen of the South in his first game last season in the early stages of the cup?

I suspected when Kelly was looking like leaving that we'd be downgrading in that position, be it due to financial restrictions or whatever, and it looks likely to be true. Let's hope we can do what we've done in the past and grab a gem from somewhere on the cheap because the suggested combo of Lewis and Oxborough doesn't fill me with confidence.

The "giving them the cup game" seems to be popular in England in recent years, at least in the early rounds. I haven't seen so much of it in Scotland, although tbf, I haven't paid much attention to the other squads in those games.

The fact the Kelly was the captain probably made him even more immune to being dropped, even in cup matches.

I don't remember much about the QoS tie, but I certainly wouldn't put any weight on form in July League Cup games whether it was that draw or the East Fife win where he kept a clean sheet.

Gillepsie was destined to remain a 2nd choice keeper for his Motherwell career until Carson was forced out with his deep vein thrombosis, and he turned out OK.

I suspect, however, that Oxborough will remain second choice and we'll bring in a first choice later in the summer. Although if that's Joe Lewis it won't be long before he's back in the first team.

Let's hope there's a relatively young keeper down south that we can bring up on loan who can do a job for us. As you say, there must be good keepers down south who can't get regular football who would be a better choice than Oxborough or Lewis.

With all the doomsday hints we've been drip fed about our finances these past few months I'm not sure we should be even pretending to do the decent thing. This is a business, and as such we shouldn't be offering to waste money on players who aren't likely to be in the managers plans.

The idea of the guy who couldn't get a look-in when Kelly was having his worst season being our new number one gives me the fear.

But I think you could be right.

Which is exactly why we can't be offering deals to guys simply because it's the decent thing to do, as has been discussed on here already. We need to start becoming more ruthless in that regard.

I wonder how any new investor would feel about that? Looking over the books and asks why a player who is hardly fit and never plays is offered a new deal, only to be told it was "the decent thing to do."

To be fair - that was speculation on my part and none of us actually know why Butcher was offered terms.

Let's hope you were correct though. If we're offering Butcher terms for actual sporting and football reasons it means a few questions need asked.

Butcher 100 percent wasn’t worth the contract offered cause we all know he is done at this level and he is so slow now the only thing he has to offer is a yellow card with the good chance of a suspension.

Obika what’s going on with him?

With the Ox signing he  has been with us years and we still don’t know what we are getting lol it’s mental.

First impression is that he comes across as a bit of a twat. I suppose that wouldn't make him unique in footballing circles.

What part of that article makes you think he is a "Twat", sounded like a man confident in his abilities to me.

I don't subscribe to this paper so could someone give a brief overview of his comments please?

He thinks he's capable of playing in the Premier League, so he isn't flattered by any interest from there. He might stay at Raith, he might not. No mention of Motherwell, or anyone else, from Easton, just mentioned as a rumour in the article.

So reading that it looks like the rumours of us already having him on a PCA might just be that.

Just an overall impression, and that may be more down to the disjointed journalism / editing, although the quote ""Even if I get the ball and give it away nine or 10 times, I’ll keep going" isn't quite what I'd be hoping to hear from a potential signing.

Also, saying "I'm committed to Raith first" and then in the very next breath adding "I've got to do what's best for me, best for my family" is right out of "Wayne Rooney's Big Book of Profound Football Clichés".

If he can do it on the park, though, I don't much care whether he's a twat or not.

That's a classic commentator remark along the lines of "missing those chances won't bother him - he'll back himself to score the next one"

Think there is a good chance it js just rumours but not many players admit they're leaving before the clubs announce it. Most end up saying they're in discussions

It says, Raith, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle, Livi and Larne are all interested.

12ft.io is always good to get by paywalls

If he a free transfer would be Motherwell should be seeing if we can get him

No chance, not a premiership player. He looked decent enough for Raith in the championship and should be left in the championship. 30 years old, never been good enough for the premiership, never will be good enough for it

Besides the point but midfield is probably the position we least need to add to at the moment.

Agree he’s not one I’d be looking at but disagree that midfield doesn’t need added to. With Spittal away we need to replace him. Halliday, I think could do us a turn but we need to strengthen around him with players who can cover his shortcomings.
