It's tough. John McGinn has been one of the more successful Scottish exports, but his trophy wins are with St Mirren and Hibs. I suspect he's enjoying himself at Villa more than he would have enjoyed himself at Celtic, but only he can say for sure if that's true. Richie Posted yesterday at 04:14 PM Report Share Posted yesterday at 04:14 PM Turnbull had a tremendous fisty half-season at Celtic. Then injuries and Ange Postecoglu's high tempo pressing game didn't really suit him.

Obviously up to each individual and it’s always nice to win medals and trophies but winning honours with Celtic in Scotland is a bit empty. They could throw one of us in from off here and we’d win medals.

Also it depends who wants to pay the most. Celtic offered more than Norwich or any other club. the sale ultimately benefited Motherwell more than it did Turnbull. Surely they have seen enough to say yep get this boy in and we shall get our money back on him at the very least if it doesn't pan out. Maybe he's slightly over-hyped (or well marketed) by the club? 3 hours ago, mio said: I do know what you sort of mean with Turnbull but let’s be fair, he went to them and won 2 titles, 2 Scottish cups and 2 league cups and also played in an environment which demanded winning on a weekly basis, playing in front of 60000 people and regular champions league matches. He wouldn’t have got that at Norwich. hes been very unlucky with injuries(as seems to be the case at the moment as well) if it wasn’t for injuries im sure he’d have been in a better place just now and still be around the Scotland squad. He made a dreadful decision going to Parkhead, a club that really doesn't fancy playing many young Scots when it matters 1 hour ago, wellgirl said: Apparently Udinese have had two offers knocked back and are going to make an improved one for Miller Hopefully the club know what they are doing...its a very brave game to be playing with under 18months to go on his contract

mothman
Ellery Balcombe - goalkeeper who was on loan to St.Mirren during the first part of this season, is incoming according to this article. https://www.nottheoldfirm.com/transfers/motherwell-strike-deal-for-epl-keeper-with-loan-experience-at-premiership-rivals/
fizoxy
Funny that the article describes him as commanding, but St. Mirren fans are not of that opinion. We need a goalkeeper, and our options are limited, so don't have a strong opinion on tnis one.
grizzlyg
Would only be a loan deal, looked decent for St Mirren so wouldn't have a problem

As stated we have limited options at this time of year and we need more than our youth keeper on the bench when our first pick is just a boy. But I wouldnt be so enthused if it was felt he was goung to be a longer term solution!
FirParkCornerExile
The club just put a vid up of Turnbull scoring , anyone think theres a chance we are getting him back on loan... wishful thinking on my part I think.

weeyin
Aye, Turnbull had surgery in December for a hamstring injury that reportedly left him facing "a lengthy spell on the sidelines"
thewelllfan
I think Balcombe is a decent shot-stopper I think he's quite poor at Crosses and distribution isn't great either. Got to be honest I feel it's probably a bit of a luxury deal as I'm sure Mair could of done a decent enough Job till Oxborough was back. I also think in a window where we're desperate for 4/5 outfield players coming in loaning in 2 new Gks probably not the best use of funds. Either way he's coming so I hope he's brilliant for us. We need to bring in another 3/4 at least - A Target-man, Winger/No10 sort of player, Holding Midfielder, Left-Wing Back, We could also probably do with another RWB/Cb option if Mcginn is out for the season. fizoxy
We don't have much of a choice, we lost our main keeper for months as well as the backup. All it takes is one injury or suspension there after the window closes and we're hosed.

However, if Kettlewell was better at managing his first team keepers, such as giving them both minutes across all competitions (eg. Hegyi this season) or dropping one when underperforming (eg. Kelly last season and Ox this season), you could imagine a scenario where Hegyi may have been more involved and would still be here.
fizoxy
Do other teams do that? The idea of cup goalkeepers seems to be an English thing, whereas most clubs our size tend to stick with a first choice keeper. It's clear that Hegyi was going to be first choice but Ox beat him to it, and with him being our player, it makes more sense to stay with him rather than develop a player for someone else. Also, if Hegyi was any good for us over a run of games he would have been recalled and shipped to someone else anyway. That seems to be what EPL clubs do. SK can be criticized for many things, but not spreading the minutes between keepers shouldn't be one of them. I personally think there should be more rotation with keepers, so that in the event you have an injury the other guy is at least aclimatized. Most managers seem to disagree though. Keepers seem to be the exception to the general transfer/loan rules, in as much as you can sign them on emergency loan if you don't have cover. That isn't a good market to shop in though, and there would be an uproar if mair got injured and we brought in some random 2nd string keeper from the lower leagues, "he knew we only had one 1st team keeper during the window and did nothing." Like I said, SK has given us all plenty of ammo to slate him, bit this one seems like something we just have to do.
