It isn't really. Clubs in Norway and other Scandinavian countries are catching on, and we're a little behind in Scotland, but we'll get there.

I think it is. I've never seen a player go for that in my lifetime but as I said before at least we have options and he's not going to be sold to Rangers and Celtic for buttons - that's the most important thing really. Too many Motherwell players have been sold on the cheap

I don't think he will go for ten million. That's crazy money. The fact is historically is that Motherwell have sold players for less than they are worth because we've had to but what might make a difference is that he hopefully won't be going to Rangers or Celtic. Im not sure he's worth 10 million tbh. He's an exceptional talent but if we do get that sum for him then of course Motherwell won't knock it back.

Who did we sell low?

I think O'Donnell was worth more than we sold him for

Turnbull too. Faddy to Everton as well. Faddy went to Everton for 1.25 million

This isn't the fault of Motherwell in my view. Just that we've always been a selling club and I think a few players have left for less than they were worth.

So hopefully Motherwell will get what Miller is worth

Actually edited to say Turnbull wasn't sold on the cheap but I think other players have been and possibly we got so little for Faddy because we were in administration

So in YOUR opinion we sold low? We made out like bandits on Phil (injured everywhere else he went, and was known as sicknote in FP) Turnbull, maybe, Faddy, nah

Well it is my opinion. But don't you think some clubs give low offers when we are selling because it's Motherwell? That's my only point on this really

Im just having this discussion with my brother just now and his opinion is that we did OK on the O'Donnell sale, Turnbull too but that a few others were sold on for less than what they were worth.

If memory serves right we insisted on the £1.75 million for Phil all paid up front

The comparisons made about McFadden and Phil O'Donnell are not valid in today's football market, the amount of cash in the game , the level of transfer fees paid is vastly different to the cash on offer 20 years ago.

Big clubs are paying millions for untried players , young players, etc hoping  that they will turn out to be decent players to sell on at vast profits.

So is £10 million from say Newcastle too much for Miller,  for me no if he fulfills his potential becomes a regular starter his value will double so its a good investment.

If we can persuade a club to pay £1.6 million plus add ons for Theo Bair ffs, getting £10 million for Miller should be easy.

I don't think we will get ten million for Miller as good as he is. If we do I don't think it will be from a Uk club... But what do I know.

Motherwell in comparison to our peers have received transfer fees they could only dream of.

St Mirren, Dundee & Killie are generally considered to be broadly similar sized clubs yet our numbers are on a completely different level to theirs.

But that's a debate for another day.

There's a few players who have been sold for decent fees that have done nothing with their careers - James Scott going for £1.75 million is the most obvious example..

Equally there's a plethora of guys have we've picked up from the wilderness and sold on for significant money - Kipre & Bair being the two most best examples of that recently.

As much as plenty of people like to complain, Motherwell's player trading over the last decade+ has been a roaring success.

Got to agree with the sentiment if not convinced on the figure. Getting £2m+ for Bair & Hastie is laughably unbelievable. Good for us right enough

Yes. Celtic shot themselves in the foot. It was to be paid in installments, but Celtic announced the deal publicly before it was signed. We then went back to them and demanded it be paid 100% up front.   We had them over a barrel and they knew it.

The reason we've never seen it happen in our lifetime is that, as a footballing nation—Celtic aside—we’re still playing catch-up to some extent.

If an 18-year-old midfielder from Norway, playing for Rosenborg, has been highlighted for scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in the top tier over there, and he's being valued at £10 million upfront with substantial add-ons, then there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be using that as a benchmark.

Factor in that there are no work permit issues when clubs in England sign players from Scotland, and the language and culture are the same—it only strengthens the argument.

On one hand, you're saying we’ve sold our players "on the cheap", yet on the other, you seem content for Lennon to be sold at what would also be considered "on the cheap" in today’s market, especially given his ability and potential.

Im not trying to suggest that I'm content to see him sold on the cheap - I'm just not sure we are going to get ten million for him. A few months ago people were talking about 4 or 5, then it went to 8 with lyon. Now it's ten. It's obviously just speculation at this point.

He’s just been called up to the Scotland squad. For an 18yr old to be picked by Steve Clarke for the national squad, that is incredible.

well deserved and I hope he gets to show people what he can do at that level.

Hope he gets a start, and he moves on as a current international player as that will increase his value, £10 million will be a bargin 😁

If Clarke gives him minutes and he impresses, and he continues to flourish for Motherwell this season, I see no reason why we can't expect his value to creep towards £10m in this market. The only downside for us is that, if he's sold at the end of this season, he'll no longer be our player when he's (likely) called up again for the international friendlies in June. So, let's hope he gets those minutes against Greece, as I can't see any other Motherwell player on the horizon likely to get full international minutes anytime soon.

I’m assuming that you’re talking about Scottish players as we have a couple of foreign internationalists playing for us at the moment.

Yes, I am referring to full Scottish international players. It's also great to have some foreign international players in the Motherwell squad, but I think it's more enjoyable to follow when you've got players turning out for the national team of your own country.
