Loved today. Went with my 12 year old sonĀ  and 13 year old son. 13 year old was not that into football but that last 5 mins got him hooked. From the injustice of the denied penalty. The way well played. The last minute goal. He even didn't criticise lack of hotdogs in cafe. Thank you mangers and players. Loved end applause to fans. Great day out. Even dropped mother in law and wife off for a day in Perth.

We thoroughly deserved to win as we were the better team and tried to let St Johnstone play football, but that was neither appreciated nor reciprocated. In truth we should have scored more and been out of sight by half time but we still lack that killer touch in front of goal. We were also a bit unlucky. Credit to SK & SF though. They almost lost us the game but in the event they won it for us.Ā

Against the backgrouind of a huge injury list and new players bedding in, I don't think the starting line up is right. Defence wise I thought our 3 central men had an excellent game, such a change from last season. That was crucial in achieving a win today. Up front, Robinson is not a lone striker, despite some deft touches.Ā  A lack of support from midfield and the close attention of a hulking 6-4 centre back made life difficult for him. Tony Watt also is never a lone striker.Ā  I was disappointed in midfield and we lack an attacking midfielder. Lennon Miller was played too far forward and his normal game was therefore constrained and to be fair Saints do have some combative and abrasive midfielders. Still his contribution from set pieces really is proving an asset and shone through today.Ā  Craig Levein will be sticking pins in his effigy this evening (only joking as he's genuinely a hell of a nice chap). I thought Halliday and Davor struggled a bit to compete and weren't really effective defensively at all. That said, Saints do have a very competitive and combative engine room, although lacking in creativity.

I felt sorry for both wing backs. Young Wilson made some telling interventions but I thought he and SOD were left out to dry a bit by our formation as Saints caused us a few problems down the flanks.Ā  On the plus side, Manwanhise looked quick and lively and we should have brought him into the game more quickly. Jack Vale too added some much need pace, when he entered the fray.

We did ok for most of the first half but took our foot off the gas a bit latterly and inexplicably. Overly cautious instructions from the technical area. For 10 minutes before they equalised, Saints began to dominate the game in midfield as we goaded them into attacking us and invited them onto us. Levein then made some inspired changes and not surprisingly they scored. We then wobbled. However, late on SK made some equally telling changes that proved instrumental in setting up a great late finish. Saints still managed to rain down 3 decent attempts on goal and the Ox wasn't best pleased with those in front of him, as they left him exposed.Ā

Then came the great finish. A series of attacks and vicious corners from Lennon Miller had Saints on the ropes and Ross Sinclair did well. Then up popped Moses to strike the killer blow and instigate scenes in the stand. Ye cannae beat a late winner! A lively crowd responded and the players appreciated that.Ā  The team showed great durability and character to win today and thats all I ask. Ā

From watching the highlights, could Oxborough done better at the goal?

Wouldn't put it in the blunder category but it seem to go under him.

This was some 'glanced' arithmetic so I hope I got it right but I make it 7 out of 14 goals scored by defenders so far this season.Ā Ā

The shot that came in at Oxborough was hit hard and at pretty close range. Could he have done better? As every headline writer in every newspaper has said multiple times this week, definitely maybe.

The striker hit it hard and low from close range, and placed it exactly where you're told to. I'd say any criticism of Ox in this case is harsh.Ā  We probably should have been more cynical in the build up and too out the sub that made the initial run, but then we wouldn't have had the Ebiye scenes.

Are we better organized at set pieces in both boxes this season, or are we purely benefitting from better delivery at one end, and Liam Gordon at the other?

SK has spoken at length (as always) about defence being our biggest weakness last season. Although you hardly need a UEFA Coaching badge to have spotted that.

Difficult to tell how much the injured defenders will add, but Liam Gordon has made a difference, and we definitely looked more organised. The biggest difference is that, so far, we have cut out most of the stupid mistakes.

Promising signs, but very early days. We won 3 and drew 1 in our first four league games last season before we went into meltdown, so no chickens being counted yet.

Yes, we're much stronger defensively than we were last season. This is especially true of our keeper and central defence.Ā  So, job seems done there. However there's more to good defence than that. I think our set up with a narrow midfield leaves the wing backs a bit exposed. This was evident yesterday but fortunately Saints weren't good enough to capitalise on it, although they targeted Ewan Wilson early on. Also I don't think Davor and Halliday are cut out, for various reasons, to shield the defence in the centre. The Ox was clearly unhappy at our midfield yesterday for letting Saints ping in 3 unopposed shots late on. I know were big on numbers now but as soon as is practicable I'd like to see us bring in a solid defensive type to slot into the middle.Ā  Work in progress, so far so good.Ā

That's what I thought he would of added we've needed a holding midfielder for years. On the game we've started to use the ball a lot better than we did at points last season and our set-peices look particularly dangerous

That's St Johnstone sacked Craig Levein. 5 games into the league season. Interesting that some Saints fans want Tom Wright brought back.Ā

Once again, it shows just how difficult it is to be a football manager of one of the smaller teams in the league.

Some very experienced managers have tried and failed with teams in recent years, Tommy Wright, Owen Coyle, Malky Mackay, Craig Levein to name a few.

Proof to me yet again that SK is doing very well to keep Motherwell's head above the water. He must be one of the longest servicing managers in the league.Ā

The life span of managers at clubs is bonkers.

To think a few on here were screaming for either Levein or the failed car salesman Tam Courts last year speaks volumes.

Ā

Exactly. I'm sure we also had people shouting for Duncan Ferguson (cause 'he wouldn't stand for any nonsense') and other dumb suggestions. Outside of three or maybe four clubs, it's a pretty difficult and thankless job thats almost always going to end in sacking. Luckily, Motherwell have three or four top class football brains on this forum that could take over if the manager was to get fired.Ā

Not surprised Levein has been sacked. Maybe just a little at how quick it has happened.

Maybe the new American owner flexing his muscles and wanting his own man in?

Just goes to show that experience isnt everything.

It was the calls for Tommy Wright that gave me the fear. Thankfully, he relegated Killie instead.

He hinted at some issues between him and the new owners on the radio at the weekend, I believe. Seems like the rest of the coaching staff are staying so might be a personality thing. Mainly that he doesn't have one.
