Motherwell v Saint Johnstone 09/11/2024

We go again.

My immediate concern is whether Kaleta will be fit. If not who slots in at RB, if SOD isn't available? Koutroumbis is far from match fit, and at best might only be good for 15/20 minutes.

We should be looking for 3 points, but Saints will prove to be a stuffy side. They'll try to bottle up our wing backs and smother Lennon Miller. if they're successful then what?

St Johnstone have been better recently but they are still vulnerable defensively.  You'd imagine the first thing they will do in the next window is get a goalkeeper cos the ones they have are probably the poorest in the league.

Upfront Kimpioka and Sidibe are big dangers.

It's almost like a bizarro St Johnstone, for so long successful with a tight defence without offering much up front, now the total opposite.

Given the injury list, the lack of attacking midfielders, and zero players to lead the line, I’d like to see us move to a 433 or something similar.

There's no chance he's moving away from five at the back. Given how bad our forward options are it wouldn't make sense anyway.

As Kettlewell pretty much said on the BBC yesterday as long as the game is close going into the final minutes he thinks he's done his job. He's not interested in or capable of going out and winning a game by playing well, keep it close and hope we get the break of the ball is our game plan against everyone from Partick Thistle to Celtic.

My comment was more blind hope. I agree that there’s no chance he’ll deviate from his crap approach to games.

I think Kaleta looked like cramp again.

He hasnt played a lot of senior football and puts in a power of running so probably not surprising.

Hopefully he will be ok.

I think Davor back in alongside Lennon to give him some protection alongside Sparrow or Wilson.

I think we need Maswanhise up with Stama.

Problem for me is that Halliday seems to be part of the leadership group and without McGinn or SOD he seems certain to start. To me, it looms like his legs have gone and he just cant get around the field quick enough anymore. Might be less of an issue against St Johnstone than it was against Celtic and Rangers. He does pass the ball better than Davor though so maybe he should be preferred?

Expect another closely fought contest. Hopefully with us winning by the odd goal.

I agree with your thinking and analysis but I hope there's a role for the currently unfit looking Tony Watt. He does need more game time, and I hoped he'd get some more as a sub yesterday too.  For whatever reason we're not getting the best out of him. I'd also like to see Koutroumbis start to get some game time to build up his fitness gradually. We might well need him in the coming weeks and months given our injury record.

I really want Tony Watt to be a success with us this time round. Not least because he is clearly desperate for a new contract with us when his current one with United expires.

The downside is he looks nowhere near fit. I really expected to see some improvement by now, but it doesnt look to be there.

Now that could be just down to match fitness and if so, a run of games is maybe what he needs.

I actually think the way we play at the moment he is likely to be the most effective foil for Stama and Id be tempted to take a punt on it, but only the manager and the fitness team will really know how far off it he is.

Gordon still suspended for this one? Was it 2 or 3 game ban?

Shite.

Forgot about that.

It was 2 games.

Thats a shame. He woulda had a serious point to prove.

Guess its Casey Balmer Blaney unless SOD makes a Lazarus type recovery.

I just got a lot less confident about a result.

Agreed. I'd like to see Watt and Stama given a run of games to see how they gel.

With Watt, it could be a bit of a catch-22 situation. He's not match fit because he's not getting game time, and he's not getting game time because he's not match fit.

SOD confirmed out at Gordon suspended. So in the basis that SK wont change from 3 at back Id go....

                            Ox

        Casey    Balmer   Blaney

Kaleta                                     Seddon

            Halliday Miller Wilson

                   Watt Stama

with Sparrow Maswanhise and Moses our subs on the 60 minute mark when Halliday, Watt and Stama are burst.

That’s a good 3 subs to have available

Exact same team but I would rather start Maswanhise.  Although he is good option to bring off bench with his pace but only if we play it on the deck and not pumping high balls

A Casey/Blaney combo sounds like a recipe for conceding a soft goal.

Need the wingbacks to be on top of their game to cut out crosses.

Aye with Gordon out, there will be a lot more pressure on Balmer and The Ox to deal with crosses into the box.
