And yet, we went to Ibrox the other week and won; we are capable of beating teams at the top end of the league when things look grim.

I do agree that things don’t look great but they could absolutely be worse. It won’t be pretty between now and the end of the season but I think we’ll have enough to fall over the right side of the line

In my Heat of Hearts I think we will too but it just wouldn't surprise me if we completely collapse because basically our squad is piss poor. Dundee play Hibs away next week, Kilmarnock are away to Celtic and St Johnstone are away to Dundee Utd, St Mirren and RC play each other. If we can come out of next weekend relatively unscathed we may only need 3 /4 points to keep us out of 11th but as I said would it surprise me if we capitulate ? no it wouldnt..  I think it will be a season ending where we hope those in 11th and 12th run out of games to catch us.

We could of course make it easy for ourselves and get into the top 6 - alright it was just a joke.

The out of contract players, and especially loan players don't give a shit whether we are relegated they will end up back at their parents clubs to see out whatever time they have left on those contracts.

The players we retain and whoever we bring in will be left to sort out the mess the club is in over the summer .

This is true however I don’t think it’s the whole problem. According to the club website we have a first team squad of 34 players. Thats enough to make 3 teams and with our limited resources it is farcical.

We have 10 players on loan:

Mair
Balcombe
Kaleta
Andrews
Watt
Plange
Dickson
Armstrong
Tavares

Vale

All of them should be out of FP at the end of the season.

Now I know opinions will differ on the next bit (hard hat on) but I think we’ve got at least 13 players who are deadwood:

O’Donnell
Thompson
Balmer
Blaney
Seddon
Casey
Zadrakovski
Halliday
Paton
Callachan
Robinson
Nicholson
Ebiye

I’d be looking to get rid of most of these and if at all possible, all of them.

This is a situation that was created by the previous manager. A squad built on quantity, with the majority of the players mediocre at best, instead of quality.

Hopefully, we’ll manage to avoid the drop and the new manager will get a chance to rebuild a smaller squad with a bit more quality in it.

Might be a joke but it’s a chance - at time of writing which might not age well - needs Hearts to draw or lose today, get beat by us next week and StM to lose or draw next week also.
I’d give us a 5% chance of top 6.

if Hearts draw their superior goal difference will make it almost impossible for Motherwell or St Mirren to catch them. We'd need a swing of 19 goals to overhaul them if they get a draw today.

Edit

I stand corrected I'm looking at a live table. I thought they had 40 points before todays game. still immaterial we ain't getting top 6.

According to stats Balcombe made 8 saves yesterday, his highest of any game this season.   Maybe he didn’t save when mattered but does suggest that it’s the defence & midfield allowing the opportunities rather than the goalie position which is the bigger issue.

TBH I’d be happy if we didn’t spend the money appealing Balmer’s red.

Ok, now I am worried.  Saints just beat sellik and had an outstanding goalie.  We need Ox back asap

Quite glad to see Simo (and his approach) pay dividends esp against that lot.  Will be more concerned if Killie get result next week.  We want a full on onslaught to destroy their goal difference 😆

He made the biggest mistake at the second goal. Did not matter what he saved previously. He is a liability at cross balls. St Mirren fans told us this when he signed. Also his saves were samson like, ie parried balls back into danger zones. He won't do. Everybody else seems to he get a chance to impress, so why cant the Ox get his chance?

Well it sort of does if he had let them in but I agree with your point.
I’m absolutely for Ox coming back if he’s fit, esp as he is our player, although he was prone to parrying a few back in danger areas himself.

Ye think weve still got Jim Gannons number somewhere? Rank rotten manger but by fuck he rebuilt a good team.

Utd winning......haud the bus folks....top 6 still achievable

I can see the script now, we will beat Hearts and st Mirren will get a VAR assisted 97rh minute winner against Ross County to claim the last top 6 spot on Goal difference 😂 it's the Motherwell way.

If St Mirren are beating RC comfortably I hope Hearts beat us LOL, I detest St Mirren with a passion.  Maybe not we might need the points in the relegation fight LOL

Exactly, the sending off is way down the list of reasons why we lost that game yesterday, you could tell after 10 minutes exactly what kind of performance we were going to put in,even with 10 men there needs to be some kind of plan to get back into the game but yet even with a man less all we did was kick it away.we struggle everytime the opposition is a man down but yet don't have a clue when the shoe is on the other foot.im at the point now where I hate this current team and want the season done,it doesn't matter what 11 is on the park its same old same old, none of them take any responsibility, take the second goal yesterday as example as if the first wasn't bad enough,we let the cross ball come all the way to the back post and not one of our players even made an attempt to jump and challenge for it,then they all look about gormless at each other, the sooner the majority of them have all fucked off and doing that elsewhere the better.

We can argue backwards and forwards about how poor this Motherwell side is but the sending off was the primary reason for the defeat.

Even after a poor 25 mins there is still the chance to turn the game around. The sending off killed the game, partly because we were poor anyway but primarily because of the man disadvantage.

There surely has to be some belief that your team can get back in the game even after a poor start if you keep a full compliment of players.

There were a few posts saying that Hearts would definitely win today. They lost, the 10 men almost certainly being the most significant factor in the loss.

This has a feel like the Alexander European season. Terrible from Christmas and then produced a victory against Hearts from nowhere.

I am not really concerned about top 6 permutations. What is more important is that a win against Hearts would probably get us over the line from a relegation perspective.

To put a different spin on things, if we beat Hearts they will be in a relegation dogfight. They can't be that good if they are in a similar situation to us after 32 games of the season.

Anything is possible next weekend as St Johnstone proved today.
