But Leitch has his sights set on succeeding McGhee at Aberdeen and believes his only chance of doing so is by impressing in the supporting role. Leitch said: "They offered me the job at Motherwell and it was a really hard decision as I have spent many years there. "But when Mark said I had the opportunity to go to Aberdeen with him I decided that was what I wanted to do. "I probably would not get the opportunity to be Aberdeen manager unless I was here, working hard and showing them what I can do. "If I can make the club appreciate what I do then I know I am giving myself the chance of one day being the Aberdeen manager. "There is an element of selfishness from myself, but my long-term goal is to be the best manager I can possibly be and working with Mark can only help me. "John Boyle and Motherwell have been fantastic to me as a player and coach and it was really difficult to turn down the manager's job at Fir Park. "But I have a drive to do well here. "Hopefully Mark and I will be a big success here and if Mark does go on to bigger and better things then hopefully I will have shown I am capable of taking on a job like this." Leitch, who won the Challenge Cup in his one season with Ross County, is relishing the challenge of working with new players under a new regime and is eager to begin work with the players when pre-season begins on July 1. He added: "Mark and I have worked extremely well in the last two years and I would like to continue the learning process with him for the next few years anyway. "To come to a club like Aberdeen is a fantastic opportunity for myself. When I went back to Motherwell I knew all the players so it was an easy transaction for me. "Coming here, working with a different board, with Willie Miller and for fantastic fans who demand success is an exciting challenge." Being an assistant doesn't always follow that you'll be the next manager. If he really wants to be a manager of Aberdeen would he not have been better taking the Mothewell job and proving what he could do himself? I am somewhat surprised that Leitch opted to continue playing second fiddle to McGhee rather than take on the Motherwell Managers job. He talks about how he wants to be the best Manager he can be - but this to me lacks any ambition. Do you think Alex Ferguson would ever have stayed as Assistant Manager if he had the option to move on, or in this case stay and manage an SPL club. To me it tells me he does not have much faith in his own abilities. In any case I was not clamouring for him to be given the job and judging by the poll neither were many others. I feel a clean slate is required and that is what is going to happen. Yeah same here...although that is exactly why he was brought back to be groomed for future manager at the club. Although I think we should all put this McGhee/Leitch thing to bed and concentrate on what the new management set up will be and IF we get any new players...lets not look at the past and look forward.. He wants to prove himself so he can become Aberdeen manager! - Does this mean he knows McGhee has his eye on another post(s) already? - Would being a successful manager at a league rival (Motherwell) not be a better way of getting your name out there? - Where has this desire to manage a club totally un-affiliated with him come from? - He potrays a desire to manage, so why not take the Motherwell offer? Ultimately the only thinkg i can conclude from this is that he didnt have the guts and/or faith in his own abillity to come out from behind McGhee and take on a No1 managers spot. The majority of the support would not want him as manager and yet we are pissed of because he did not take the managers job. What was he supposed to do? Stay as No2 waiting for any Tom, Dick or Harry to come in as his Boss? He will be on better wages with a No 1 he has built a good working relationship with and trusts. As well as that he is offering to help out untill we find a replacement. There is no pleasing football supporters sometimes. Anyway I always thought Leitch was a Rangers fan. Why humility should be held against someone I don't know, but there you go, football messageboards, hardly bastions of fairness. totally agree, i would like to think i'm a little ambitious in my line of work. however if my managers job came up next week, i wouldnt apply, and if offered it, i wouldnt take it. I dont think i'm ready for it and i hate doing a job that makes me look stupid or makes out as if i dont know what i'm doing. Maybe he felt 2yrs at top flight coaching wasnt enough to take the step up,maybe he feels he needs another couple of years. he wasnt our choice, and the majority didnt want him in - so why all the fuss? he feels he works well with Mutley and wants to continue that. I have no problem with that. loyalty in the work place does not exist anymore in any walk of life (if it does, its the very very small minority) We are Motherwell and we have to accept that people will use us to move onto bigger things Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

See, we agree on this one I also believe that in these days of the modern manager, there are many good assistants who won't want the step up. Gone are the days when the manager was the guy who ran the day-to-day minutiae of the team. Most of the training and player wellfare seems to lie with the assistant, while the manager has to take care of other responsibilites within the club. If you are the sort of guy that gets more satisfaction from running the coaching and training, then club management might not be the career for you. I refuse to wish good luck to someone purely because they have had some sort of association with MFC. As far as I'm concerned, Leitch and McGhee are less than nobody now, and I wish them (and Aberdeen) every misfortune for the remainder of their careers.
