Last season in Nancy sure it was in double figures. Scared to even think how many it has been in the SPL or Domestic Cups. As for the OP. About 5, maybe 6 direct OGs. And apart from one, which was an awful OG (think against Celtic - where he tried to jump over the ball?) the rest have been very unlucky. Especially the one against Hearts when they beat us 1-0 in that windy day at Fir Park. Dodge Posted July 31, 2009 Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 Terry Butcher scored more goals against Rangers during Souness's day than any other player. OGs count for nothing. We didn't lose last night because of one goal. Craigan may not be everyone's first choice but at this moment we've got no one who can do the job just as good in his place. Craggs is a decent, honest player who like everyone in the team has their frailties but until we sign 2 centre halves which are of better quality then Craggs will get my full backing. There were many errors for all the goals last night, but it is easier to sit back for us to back and pick faults. In fact, not only Craigan was to blame for the 1st goal. Why the hell do Motherwell insist of not having men on the posts, why does everyone except Craigan run towards the ball, leaving Craigan with no option to try and clear it (chose wrong foot, but then again, knowing Crags luck he would have gone with his left and it would have still spooned into the net). The second goal came from our attack, our midfield being far to slow and our defence just being split wide open with a very good, but common move. The third - Well poor defending on the right, woeful position from Ruddy for when the ball came in (he was outside the line of his front post so wasn't even covering his front post!) and then Reynolds letting someone come in - or not letting Hutchison know there's a guy strolling into the area. Craigan with some of his tackles made up for one second of madness in my eyes. Last night he made a bad mistake, but what player hasn't? But just for the sake of interest, can any stattos tell us how many OGs he has scored? And is it as many as Softie? star sail Posted July 31, 2009 Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 With talk of Fitzpatrick, McGarry etc and the different opinions thereof I think it is Craigan that is the biggest enigma at Fir Park. My first post on Steelmen online was to criticise Craigan for what I thought was a really poor run of games that concluded in (I think) 6 own goals. The reaction I got was so extreme I thought I was going to have to hide out with Salman Rushdi for a while. I still think he is a bomb scare and yet when he was out the team last season we went through our poorest run of form at that time. The conclusion I have come to is that he does more for the team than is immediatly apparent. I would like to see him play along side another really strong CD before I cast a final judgement as I feel that he has been coaching Reynolds through the last few seasons. The first two posts of this thread highlight to me the two camps in the Craigan debate. Those who question his worth and those who show him a loyalty and backing that almost puts him beyond reproach. He broke up about four attacks when he was the last (Or nearly last) man. Indeed, in the first thirty minutes had it not been for him and Ruddy we could've been three or four down. He was so, so unlucky with the goal and these things happen but he's a terrific player, a terrific guy and a top captain of the club. He didn't say it was deliberate you nonce, read the OP. He must have scored more in his own net than he has in anyone elses surely? Thought he was having a good game aswell, but he's starting to look shakey. Letting the ball go right over his head for the Albanian goal at Airdrie? And the countless times he misjudges headers. And the random 'punts' up the park. Added to the fact he has very little pace and loves blaming the defenders around him for his mistakes, like a good captain does. By the very nature of where they play in a team, they are always going to score more oggys than anyone else in the team. coldonmac Posted July 31, 2009 Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 Own Goals are an unfortunate part of the game and especially more so for a defender. Many of the times it happens is because the defender is under pressure from an attacker, yes occasionally it can be a mis-kick etc. If you are going to count the OGs scored then to balance it up you need to count the number of "sitters" missed by an attacker (imho). In the case of Craggs, frequently he is the only defender near the ball and also (again imho) the player most likely to put his body on the line to stop an attempt on goal. His "goals cost" versus "goals prevented" over the years is just about equal I'd say. I like the cut of his gib as a player and a person. Perhaps it's because they are the type who get stuck in and enjoy a last ditch tackle, only to end up putting it in, I dunno. Terry Butcher has been mentioned, Richard Dunne has scored a fair few at City, and when I was a kid there was a 'defender' ( very loose description ) called Graeme Hogg at United who was something of an o.g. specialist. numpty Posted July 31, 2009 Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 Let's also not forget that Craggs has started over 250 games for us (and come on as a sub in another 13), so if the figure of 6 OGs is about right, then that's only about one per season on average. When you're playing in central defence for a team like us that's going to be under the kosh in more games than not, it's not such a high figure really. Keeper looks alright, don't have a problem with Hammell, Reynolds, Hutchinson (despite last night), Slane, Murphy, Lasley, J'O B and Humphrey have the potential to cause problems. So aye.
