Onthefringes
Looking at the footage its in better condition than this time last year but has no grass, clear that the U/S heating has killed it. Hopefully after a full summer of not being ripped up and relaid this year if no work is required it will be stronger again next winter. Will see the benefit in a year or two of the money spent hopefully. Sorry, the effect of undersoil heating gives lie to a 'growth season'. Hence, the need to apply feeder to the pitch or in the clubs' case, reason enough to run heavy plant machinery on the playing surface when taking a little longer to complete the task manually would suffice. The firm that helped build the pitch told us to sand it, all part of process seemingly. As has been mentioned, the pitch looks bad but doesn't seem to play that badly. Heralded by current groundstaff, the introduction of fibre sand years after availability on the market, is performing. Though, the divot and sandstorm created in front of the East Stand post Hutchisons' early challenge is a sign of things to come as the temperature rises heading for spring... And instead of the usual getting tore into the club, should the SPL not get the blame? Eh? Did the SPL employ the current groundstaff likes? Shotts Well Fan
Wit? It's no worse than any other? I've heard that statement a few times now and the only explanation I can come up with is I must have been watching different highlights. Just wait until you see the pitch @ Perth this week. Kmcalpin
Wit? It's no worse than any other?.... But as others have said, driving a tractor over a pitch as fragile as ours is just draft. If you're going to Perth on Wednesday you'll see a really poor pitch. As for tractors damaging the surface...a complete red herring. Every club uses them as it simply isn't realistic to do everything manually.
Onthefringes
If you're going to Perth on Wednesday you'll see a really poor pitch. Most probably, though, why is comparison with others held up as some sort of virtue by many on here? Our budget has been greatly reduced by installation and remedial works year on year, some inherent problems I grant you, incompetency cannot be excused. It could well be the next thing the Shettleston Harriers have a complaint about, at least our referee brethren will get a break. Will our club? Back pages again is no consolation when the club are pilloried as much as on here and the media pressure league administrators to impose what we can ill afford. As for tractors damaging the surface...a complete red herring. Every club uses them as it simply isn't realistic to do everything manually. Who fed you that line? When the formation isn't of the strength required, by your reckoning, it's still best practice to use heavy plant machinery? I seriously wish I'd stuck in at school now, wouldn't have spent as much time studying varying theories in regards earthworks, formation treatments and the like. When the specialist advice and expertise offered to our club at a premium goes unheeded...
Big Stall
As for tractors damaging the surface...a complete red herring. Every club uses them as it simply isn't realistic to do everything manually. I don't know with any authority the effects heavy machinary has on a football pitch, but can't imagine that it wouldn't do damage. What I do know is that golf courses don't allow buggies in periods of heavy rain fall, and many ban buggies and even electric caddy cars during the winter as the weight and wheel traction can damage the surfaces. Given that our pitch is brand spanking new and delicate, I would have thought best practice would be to keep any heavy duty gear off it. *Happy for my opinion to be put right by someone with real knowledge/experience on the subject. Steve Diggle
I'm afraid it looks like the beginning of the end for new pitch number 2. I sincerely hope it can be salvaged but the transformation from lawn to desert looks to be once more underway. I tend to listen to onthefringes on these matters - he's very rarely not 'on the money'

Burn_Broomfield
And what of the pitch at Perth? Not as bad as ours.
Kmcalpin
And what of the pitch at Perth? It may have looked greener but the surface was poorer - one of the reasons why the ball was in the air so much. During the game the ball also took quite a few horrendous bounces. Steve Diggle
Watched Wee Stu's interview on the news channels tonight - anybody know what type of cover was on the pitch - and why it would be covered on a relatively sunny day. Frost protection? or Propogation?
foghorn
Aye found that strange as forecast for today was sunny. You would think a bit of sun was what the pitch would need right now

dundeesteelman
I really hope to god that the SPL take a good look North of Motherwell (Perth) and come down on the saints. 5 games called off already this season!!!! We would have been fined £1M and docked 20 points by now!!!!!

Aye but in fairness the media and many Well fans have a lot of sympathy for Saints. Unlike us they've had really bad weather and rotten luck. 5 one off incidents. Unlike us they've had really bad weather and rotten luck. 5 one off incidents. Oh yeah I forgot that. Was reading United's managers statement regarding thier pitch being a doubt for today as well. I really hope it is called off. Maybe then the media will highlight some issues. Would only be because it is the old firm though!!!
Bigeeze
So, where is he media outcry regading the United call off of the game last night? Ifwe had lost the number of games to the weather that they had the press et al wld be calling for us to be thrown out of footbqll completel, never mind points deductions and fines. Typical hypocrisy (sp)
siebsbarmyarmy
It would be interesting to see the stats off the past say 5 years and see who has had the most games called off over that period! I'm shit at doing this type of thing! I just hope they have a severe fixture pile up prior to the Scottish Cup game! Resulting in injuries/suspensions to them etc! Orinoco
switched on the radio and heard Chick Dung moaning about our beach! Just switch on BBC alba and although the pitch aint brilliant, still enough grass on it to wonder about Dungs comments. That fecker should be reminded we got the game on, perhaps he should enquire about St Johnston & Utd. The club needs to grow a set and tell these feckers where to go. Rickoza
Pittodrie was no bowling green on Tuesday and there was no comment. Nothing said about how dismal Tannadice and McDairmid has been, but as soon as Ibrox Chick is sent to Fir Park the place is instantly slated. F*CK OFF Young.
