Motherwell have made a strong start in the SPL and a Co-operative Insurance Cup win over Terry Butcher’s Inverness Caledonian Thistle has seen Jim reminisce about County’s fantastic run in the equivalent English competition in 1996/97. "The League Cup is a competition that holds a lot of memories for me," said Gannon. "The one that sticks out most was with Stockport back when we reached the semi-finals of what was the Coca-Cola Cup after beating four Premiership sides on the way. "We eventually were knocked out by Middlesbrough when Fabrizio Ravanelli scored twice at our place when they won 2-0 and although we went to the Riverside and won the second leg 1-0 and gave them a real scare, it just wasn’t enough. "I think we played 20 cup matches that season, it was a fantastic time." Jim has set his sights on taking his new side one step further than County and suggested that the prospect of lifting some silverware is a real possibility. He added: "I am sure The Co-operative Insurance Cup will prove equally as exciting for me, a lot of people here are quite excited as we feel we’ve got a real chance of progressing far. Clubs of our size have got to give their all in this competition because it is only really one of two realistic opportunities to pick up some silverware." Motherwell visit St Mirren in the fourth round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup on October 27.
