Gannon targets January clear-out Jutkiewicz and Gannon had an excellent October at Fir Park Jim Gannon has told underperforming players to leave in January as he and Lukas Jukiewicz picked up awards for Motherwell's fine October form. Gannon was named Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League manager of the month, while 20-year-old striker Jukiewicz won the young player award. "We've got a lot of players in the squad who are perhaps not earning their money," said Gannon. Club captain Stephen Craigan, for one, was dropped from the squad on Saturday. The Northern Ireland international has been in and out of the starting line-up this season before missing the 1-0 win over Hearts. Gannon picked out youngsters Shaun Hutchinson and Steven Saunders, who formed the central defence in Craigan's absence, for particular praise after the Scottish Premier League victory. And, while the manager would not name who he would like to see move on in January, he said: "I think you just need to look at the team sheet." Midfielder Keith Lasley is another experienced player who has not featured in the starting line-up much this season and was on the bench against Hearts. Gannon - whose side sit fourth and were unbeaten in the SPL last month, including a draw away to leaders - wants players to leave in January to free up money to bring in new talent. But one player the Motherwell manager does not want to see leaving fir Park is the SPL's young player of the month. Jutkiewicz, on-loan from Everton until January, has scored three goals this season, including a double against St Mirren and the winner over Falkirk. "We'd obviously like to keep hold of the quality boys we have," said Gannon. "Lukas has really contributed so far and it would be great to have him here for the rest of the season, but it's out of our hands at this stage". Haggischomper Posted November 5, 2009 Report Share Posted November 5, 2009 Unfortunate for some of the players likely to leave in January as some have been very good servants but there's a new guy in charge now and I think in an earlier thread I mentioned that some of these guys are like square pegs in a round hole for Gannon's system. VERY unfortunate but that's the fitba' biz these days. Hopefully they all get fixed up with something else soon and can continue on in their careers. If we replace them, will it be for experienced players? I doubt it. As long as they are replaced with permanent signings and not more loans. Maybe craigan would consider going PT and studying to be a coach? right, this season craigan has been our motm against aberdeen and falkirk and put in good performances against killie and steaua. he's also played very well in three games for NI against poland, czech republic and slovakia. i don't get where the idea that he's finished comes from, end of august and september he's getting motms and doing well in world cup qualifiers, one bad game in the cup in october and he's finished? i don't see any of the other four leaving either, mainly because no will give them as good contracts as the ones they have and they'll have a chance of getting better deals in the summer when clubs have more room in their budgets. they might also want to play their way back in at fir park. gannon's ability in the transfer market still has a big question mark beside it. out of his four permanent signings two have been great and two have had no impact. big giles was a great find but he's out of contract at the end of the season and hateley's been a great signing but gannon didn't unearth him, we're the 3rd or 4th spl club he came to on trial. the loan signings have been great but are all out with our budget long term. milo Posted November 5, 2009 Report Share Posted November 5, 2009 I'd be pretty annoyed if Lasley was to leave but I think we could live with the loss of McGarry, Fitzy and Darren Smith. It would a shame if Craigan left due to it being his testimonal year but the defence is definately stronger without him. I think deals may be done to keep Ruddy, The Duke and Yass till the end of the season. Jennings hasn't been given any chance at all yet and I think Coke and Hateley will get tied up. Unless some bastard steals them from under our noses. I have a sneaky feeling O'Brien will leave. But probbably not till the end of the season. Neil Posted November 5, 2009 Report Share Posted November 5, 2009 Think we'll see McGarry moving on for sure, the fact he isn't anywhere near the first XI tells its own story. Lasley will probably go too, not a huge loss as he's average at best. Craigan, I'd like to see retained in a coaching role but if Gannon doesn't see him fit for that purpose he'll be best leaving. Don't think Craigan deserves alot of the stick that he gets, yes, he's recently had a few bad games and gone off the boil a bit but does that mean we need to get shot of him. All you need to do is look at Clarky, he played well a few seasons ago and then really struggled for a while after it and he came good again. I believe we are shooting ourselves in the foot if Craigan leaves. Keith Lasley, in my opinion, deserves to stay, I personally would have him in the team every week. I think he is a solid midfielder. What happens if our younger players get injured, suffer poor form etc. Craigan might need to spend some time on the bench but I don't see him going. Lasley and McGarry will be gone. It's easy for us to say who we should keep or get rid of, but we don't know the wages they are on and if letting go of a guy we all like who hasn't kicked a ball since May means we can bring in another player to help complete the Jim Gannon jigsaw then so be it. Forgot about him. In saying that isn't he 6 months into a 2 year contract and allegedly earning 2k a week? If so I doubt he will be going anywhere and that will be MF's choice. Totally agree Steelboy. My only dissappointment of the Gannon era is the lack of Scots featuring. Hopefully this will only be in the short term though, as he integrates our Scottish youngins' into the long term mainstays of the team. If someone can move on thats on a decent wage and he can bring in a younger model thats gonna play the ball on the deck at pace in the style he wants then that's what'll happen. The development in a matter of weeks shown by the likes of Saunders and Hutch is incredible. Saunders looked like a nervous laddie at the Shyberry vs Llannelli - getting pelters from the stand - look at him now - and hats off to both him and Gannon. Hutch I think has the potential to develop into the best defender we have ever seen in my lifetime at The Ark. Ernie Posted November 5, 2009 Report Share Posted November 5, 2009 I am not surprised to see this report like some I would be disappointed to see Craigan go his experience is worth more than his ability although I do think he has ability however, he does not fit Gannon's profile of a mobile centre defender. I wouldn't miss Lasley never really rated him, always thought he was a bit one paced and I think he has a habit of running and hiding when the chips are down, my opinion and I know you don't all agree before I get the pelters. McGarry don't let the door hit you on the arse, I would be surprised if Fitzy and DLS were off in January because of the injuries but they will only have until the summer to impress. I would like to see the Duke stay, what I have seen of the lad he looks to have potential just needs a bit of time, JOB could be off but I would be surprised this year I think he needs to build more of a reputation for himself and FP is a good place for that. As for Coke, Hately, Ruddy and Yas I would love to see them stay but it will definately be a money thing although if they want to stay I think they will.
