Orinoco Posted January 1, 2009 Report Share Posted January 1, 2009 I seem to recall we had agreed a price for a centre back from dunfermline, but the lad chose to go to Hibs. Given that our squad has also shrunk considerably, and presumably the wage bill (Remember Boyle is apparently picking up some of the wage burden re Porter & Hughes) since McGhee arrived. There is surely money available to bring in bog standard players. Why bother to push the boat out to bring in Hughes and Porter, which resulted in european football, to suddenly decide not to invest in the team much like the Butcher & Malpas eras? We must also be flush with monies if we can reduce the fee for old firm fans. If another transfer window opens and closes without a decent stab at addressing our teams weaknesses then McGhee's & our board of directors need to go. Throughout our clubs history, we have always found gems, and by individuals who apparently dont even have the same amount of contacts in the game that we keep hearing about. Does anyone really know what some or all of our directors do? We will always have problems attracting quality players because we can't afford big transfer fees or big wages. Bosmans aren't much better, because the players expect to get a big signing bonus instead. Midfielder Marc Fitzpatrick is a doubt after being hit by illness, while Maros Klimpl continues in defence after his loan deal was extended. Is this our youth being ignored for cheap foreign imports? Perhaps time for honesty with him to let him know if he has a future at the club. A keeper only 6 months older than him beinf taken in as number 2 must be a real kick in the teeth. I would have thought an experienced keeper would have been the requirement at this time, especially if we get dragged into a relegation battle. Motherwell manager Mark McGhee is looking at two trialists after moving quickly to replace loan goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen. Birmingham youngster Artur Krysiak is expected to join the Fir Park club on loan until the end of the season. McGhee has also extended the loan spell of Maros Klimpl, while trialists Simon Elliott and Byron Webster are hoping to win contracts. Krysiak, 19, made four appearances on loan at Gretna last season, including one in a 3-1 defeat to Motherwell. The Pole played two games for York in August but a dislocated finger cut short his loan spell. He then played two games for Birmingham's Coca-Cola Championship rivals Swansea in October. Krysiak should replace Nielsen, who returned to Blackburn this week without making his Motherwell debut, on the bench against St Mirren in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League on Saturday. Former York defender Webster, 21, is contracted to FK SIAD Most but is free to move following their relegation to the second tier of Czech football. McGhee said: "We've been training indoors and it's difficult to asses him but he will stay here a bit longer." New Zealand midfielder Elliott, 34, is a free agent after being released by Fulham in the summer. The former Los Angeles Galaxy and Columbus Crew player made 13 appearances for Fulham shortly after joining in January 2006, but he has now not played first-team football for two-and-a-half years. Meanwhile, McGhee is pleased to have Slovakia international Klimpl on board until the end of the season. The 28-year-old's debut was delayed by almost three months due to an ankle problem after he signed a loan deal from FC Midtjylland in August. But he shone in a holding midfield role in Motherwell's 3-2 win over Inverness last Saturday. "He did well in midfield," McGhee said. "The great thing about him is that he can give you the option, he can play in midfield or at the back. "It's important in a small squad that you have players with versatility." Meanwhile, McGhee is happy to leave the recruitment of a potential new goalkeeper to specialist coach Colin Meldrum. Motherwell are understood to have shown an interest in Linfield and Northern Ireland keeper Alan Mannus, whose contract expires at the end of the season. Well could need a new number one, with Graeme Smith yet to agree to extend his deal beyond the summer. "We are always looking for good players," McGhee said. "It might be that we find a better goalkeeper than Graeme Smith. "We are always entitled as management to look to improve our team, so that's what Colin will be doing." Juan Kerse Posted January 5, 2009 Report Share Posted January 5, 2009 Assuming he is over 6ft he sounds what we are after, and McGhee is on record saying he likes a big 'scandanavian type' defender. Although, I guess Reynolds isn't in the managers first team plans, at least at centre half with say the Norwiegan, Klimpl, Craigan and Boab to an extent all big guys for the position. MelvinBragg Posted January 5, 2009 Report Share Posted January 5, 2009 Another loan goalie to replace Neilson was always going to be a necessity so at least we've dealt with that issue (I've resigned myself to the fact that we'll never have two goalies registered with us full time ever again). We're looking at two centre backs but forgive me if I don't get too excited as it all sounds very familiar from previous transfer windows. Like Juan Kerse, I'm imagining it would be Reynolds that would make way should any new signing force his way into the first team. On this season's form, that should certainly be the case. Does Reynolds fit elsewhere into McGhee's plans? There have been a few people on the forum suggesting he could play a holding midfield role. With Lasley, Malcolm and Klimpl already vying for that role, I can't see him fitting in there. He would probably offer more than Hammell defensively at left back, but we rely heavily on our full backs for attacking width so I don't know if he'd fit the bill there. A summer move beckons for Reynolds? Question is how much will we get for him if he drops out of the first team?? The guy Elliot is an interesting one. Not knowing what type of midfielder he is, I don't know what he'll bring to the team. What I do know is that with Klimpl's recent showings in midfield, it's the one area of the park we have a few players competing for places (Will Malcolm start a Motherwell game again?). Well I think it would give Mark McGhee the opportunity to rest him, should that be required. If that isn't the case then almost certainly he'd move to left back. From McGhee's past comments, he obviously wanted him to play in the midfield and has been disappointed in the lack of fitness which has prevented from playing that role more often. The_Pup Posted January 6, 2009 Report Share Posted January 6, 2009 Maybe MMG is looking for additions that will allow him to move from the current 4-3-3 / 4-4-2 balance we have - another CB would allow us to go 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 with Reynolds holding down a starting place in either - had Reynolds been on better form since August I think MMG would have been looking to cash in on him. Fat Boab can go whenever - i see no place for him and never have - i'd rather give the young boys a crack in the first team than play an over weight never-will-be on youth - what happened to Archibald ?
