Hi, I am a Breiðablik supporter and we are very exited to be playing Motherwell. Scottish football and it supporters are very highly thought of by Icelanders. Mainly due to the fact of scottish clubs and the national side visiting our northern Island on a regular basis in the past few years and being the BEST bunch of supporters to come here, every time. You guys know how to party, support and celebrate in style. Met a few Scots when Iceland played Scotland last couple of years ago, great lads.

 

Anyway I will be looking forward to this tie and I must warn you to underestimate at us. Of course, if you played us ten times you would win nine times but the fact that Motherwell are only just starting their season will be an advantage to us. Also the fact that we have a very talented squad of young and hungry players eager to show their prospective buyers what they can do. Many of our players are being linked with foreign teams and to play in Europe will be the best shopping window.

 

Six of our players are part of the U-21 group for Iceland which has a very good chance of qualifying to the 2011 European Championship Finals. Iceland currently lies second in the group with 13 points, two behind the Czech Republik and Five MORE than Germany. Iceland drew Germany (the reigning European champions) 2-2 away earlier this year and has scored the most goals than any other side in the competitions, 24 goals in 6 games. The most important Breidablik player and the young player of the year in the Icelandic premiership last season, Alfreð Finnbogason, has scored 3 goals in 4 games for the Iceland U-21s in the qualifiers. Iceland also beat N-Ireland 6-2 in Belfast last year with Finnbogason getting on the scoresheet.

 

Finnbogason is the best player in Iceland at the moment. He is 20 years old and finished the 3rd highest scorer in the Premiership with 13 goals in 18 games last seasn. This season the manager has chosen, because of his footballing brain and passing abilities, to deploy him as the playmaker in most games but he still scores goals and is currently 3rd in the topscoring charts with 5 goals in 8 games. This will be his last season in Iceland. He will go onto bigger things after this season.

 

We at Breidablik pride ourselves of our youth system and nearly all of our players have come through the ranks at our club. We have experimented with foreign players in the last few years but since the economic crisis we depend only on our young talented players and that will pay dividends in my opinion.

I won't be making the away leg unfortunately but I was there for the Scotland game in 2008 and I left having fallen a little bit in love with Iceland so I'll definitely be back at some point in the future!

 

I've kept an eye on Icelandic football for about ten years now ever since I had to proof read an article on KR on my work experience (when David Winnie of all people was manager!), so this should be an interesting tie!

 

But yeah, feel free to stick around and chat!

No thats Kjartan Henry Finnbogason who now plays for the scum KR Reykjavik. Our Finny is miles better, I would not bet against Motherwell offering him a trial after seeing him in action. He's a very talented player and very young.

 

Now onto the beer, its much more expensive for us than you guys. Our Krona has collapsed since the Economic Crisis and its much cheaper to visit Iceland now than lets say 2 years ago.

Thanks for saving us some cash by not having to send a scout ahead of the match. Like you we rely on our youth system. Until the recent management/commercial team took over too many of our talented players left extremely cheaply or on Bosman's. However glad to say we're now securing our young players into 2-3 year deals.

 

We can't ignore your match readiness it will obviously count in your favour as is your current form (many Scottish fans will look back to our WC2010 qualifier against Norway last August).

 

I think many Motherwell fans feel we should be able to continue what we started from January of this year however it looks as if we will start next season 5 or so players down from what we would have definitely made the starting 11 two months ago.

 

I think the hope is we have the experience in our management team, depth of quality in the squad and playing in a higher league should see us through however I don't think anyone feels it is assured as a couple of our Europa qualifiers last summer testify to.

 

Looks like Dundee Utd vs Plymouth Argyle or a Celtic away effort.

Thanks. I am really looking forward to the tie. David Winnie is a legend in Iceland, he was a great defender and managed KR at a real crisis time for the club. He now has an Icelandic wife and is now a lawyer I think. I however have no soft spot for KR.

The stadium is almost never sold out unless its against our local rivals in HK and against the big teams. However this is our FIRST ever european game and the tickets will almost certainly be sold out fast. However maybe some additional seats will be planted at the stadium.

We have been in Europe the past 2 years and our away crowd has varied from nearly 3000 to nancy in France to only 20 to Flumartari in Albania, although we were told by the club not to travel for that tie.

 

We are running an official club charter which will take up to 120 fans + I exepct that another 150-200 may travel giving us over 300 fans. I think a lot of fans are hoping we get through this tie and maybe one other and get a glamour tie v Liverpool/Juventues and the like.

 

That said as Motherwell fans we will NEVER underestimate the opposition. We will play 3 friendlies before the first leg, but that is no substitute to 9-10 competitive matches. At this stage last year we beat Flumartari 8-1 in the home leg. No-one sees anyhting like a repeat of that scoreline. We will settle for winning the tie by 1 more goal

I'm sure I won't be alone in saying my knowledge of Icelandic football is very limited - limited to nothing in fact. How many divisions and clubs are there, and are any of them professional? Isn't the total population of Iceland around 250,000? What is the structure of the game in such a tiny country?

 

Away from football, has life changed much since the economy collapsed during the recent banking crisis?

 

And is it true that Icelandic is the most difficult language anywhere?
