Infamous Wee Grafter
What season was it that we dropped out of the main Reserve League and played in the West Of Scotland Reserve League instead? Davie Cooper was still playing and pulling the strings as we pumped teams like Stenhousemuir 8 or 9 nil. Also did we win the Reserve League that year? steelman1991
Don't think we withdrew from the Main league - but played the u19's/youths in the Reserve League West - used to play their games at Bellshill astroturf , sure it was behind Bellshill baths. Infamous Wee Grafter
Nah this was before the days of U-19s teams and we played the games at Fir Park. Maybe around 92/93 or 93/94 seasons.
Yir Elder
I think it was 93/94, mind being at a game against Clyde that we won 9-0, with Coop and Mowgli almost unplayable. Not sure how the league ended up, but we must've done well with scores like that!
steelman1991
Nope we didn't - at least according to this archive we didn't - http://scottish-football-historical-archiv...erveleague5.htm Infamous - Youth teams aren't a recent innovation, Motherwell have had one in one form or another for at least the last 30 years. The period I was referring to may have been prior to the 'Coop' era, but did take place, because there was no organised youth league for professional teams at that time and our entry to that league allowed the team to play together on a regular basis. At that time the players, although registered to Motherwell played for different teams throughout the country on a Saturday. Reserve League West games were played on a Monday night - watched a young Scott Leitch/Stevie Bryce inspired 10-0 demolition of QOS in that competition at Bellshill in 86-
Rickoza
Pretty sure it was called the Reserve League West, and I'm certain we skated it.
Andy_P
As I recall we finished runners-up to Celtic in the Reserve League West that year. I think those days were perhaps the height of my Motherwell obsession and my old man and I, along with a handful of others, trooped around various places like Forthbank and Firs Park watching the reserves that year. We actually got some pretty good crowds for them as well. East Stirlingshire produced a programme for those games and listed attendances. Most of them were 80's, 90's and the small hundreds and when you got to us I think we'd almost a 1000 at the corresponding game at Fir Park. One of the games that cost us the title was a 2-2 draw towards the end of the season at Forthbank. Curiously enough we had to play them a week or so later and I couldn't make it as I was taking the BB fitba team that night. My old man and sister still went though. 14-0 to Motherwell I think it was in the end....
