Angelis Charalambous out to prove he can be a big gun with Motherwell

Jul 2 2010 By Neil Cameron

NEW Motherwell defender Angelis Charalambous will this season be the SPL's one and only tank commander.

That isn't the nickname given to a player who is difficult to get past on the park - he actually drives a tank in his other life.

The 19-year-old is a Cypriot and has still to complete his full national service with the army.

Charalambous, who had been at Anorthosis Famagusta, was spotted by Motherwell head of youth Gordon Young and signed a one-year deal last month with an optional 12-month extension.

He said: "I am doing my two years in the army which everyone has to do. I had to go back to Cyprus to get my release papers so I could return to Motherwell and I actually managed to watch the last couple of games of the season.

"I'm not finished with the army yet. I had another three months to go. I drive a tank. But Motherwell wanted me right away so I couldn't finish my army stint.

"That means every six months I have to go back to Cyprus and get my release papers signed again. I have to get three release papers in total and they don't call me back after that.

"It has been tough. For two years I have slept four hours a day. At night time, while standing guard, I could be there for four hours at a time until 6am.

"I was only allowed out twice a week to train for a few hours and then I'd go back into the army."

Charalambous will need to get used to the weather, the pace of Scottish football and the fact he'll get a lie-in now and then.

He said: "My typical army day was waking up at 6am, I'd have a bit of breakfast, tidy my bed and then I would go for gymnastics whether that be push-ups, pressups or chin-ups.

"Then I would go drive my tank! After that I had to stand guard.

"You do get used to it. I did get some free time, maybe until 9pm and then I would go to training with Famagusta. I would get some days off and I fixed them so I could play the actual games. Being a footballer is much better. I'm getting used to the longer sleeps. Training every day is really good for me."

Charalambous is a defender who can play in several different positions. He said: "I'm hardworking and always want to improve as a player.

"I like to listen to my teammates, even if they are younger than me. You can always learn by listening.

"I look up to Stephen Craigan. He is very experienced and knows where to position himself on the pitch. I can learn a lot from him as a defender.

"It has been brilliant so far. Training has been good and I like the club. I can't wait for the season to start."
