Broon's Spl Away Record

I am sure some of you have noticed (it was the talk of the Press box yesterday) that our away SPL record under Craig and Archie is absolutely fantastic.

In full charge (i.e. 2010), we've played thirteen, won 6, drawn 4 and lost just three (Dundee Utd and Celtic x2).

Brilliant stuff - third best in the SPL in 2010 (behind Old Firm).

Onwards and upwards...

It is a superb record, especially when you consider that we've kept 8 clean sheets in those 13 games!!

Mind you, we could do with slightly improving our home record under Craig and Archie, which stands at 5 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats, with only four clean sheets and no wins in our last 5 at Fir Park.

All in all though its a very decent return, and one which if replecated this season should see us in the Top Six again come May.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think the way football is going, certainly in Scotland, teams are better equipped to play away from home (I heard a stat on Sportsound this afternoon that there have been more away wins than home in the SPL this season). Be tight at the back and hit on the counter, taking your chances when they come.

As the gaffer said in his post match yesterday, it suits us as, for the first time in quite some time, we have quite a bit of pace up top. Humphrey, Blackman and Murphy are all really quick and give us great options when breaking at pace.

That's complimented by two hard-working, ball-winning midfielders and a battering-ram like Sutton who can throw his weight about, hold up the ball and link play.

Not forgetting our solid and experienced defensive line too.

In many ways, we've very much set-up to be a counter-attacking team. It might not always be pretty (read some comments about our style of play in the last week or so), but it is (certainly so far) working out well.

Brown's and Motherwell's record in 2010, for a club like ours, is absolutely fantastic and no praise is high enough imo!

The points picked up on the road are impressive no doubt and without them we would be in a completely different place.

Unfortunately fitba isn't played on paper and when we pay 18/20 quid for a home game or £250 for a season book - we're lookin to see football not a stats package. I get enough o' them at ma work.

Like i say - hats off for our endeavour on the road - but somethins broken if we can't overcome some of the pish we've come up against at fir park with some decent football.

I think the SPL has been like that for a number of years to be honest. In my opinion though we are perfectly well equipped to be giving it large to teams like Hibs and Aberdeen at home. If Granpa can sort that side out then he really will have earned such praise again in double measure.

In both these games we lost an early lead and ended up with 1/6 points by continuing to try to play attacking football. Maybe we should try to adopt a more defensive attitude at home?

TBH I'd be happy to see us win 1-0 every week and get intae Europe again! <_>

Ps, as this thread is for stattos, yesterday was only our 8th ever Premier win at Tynecastle since 1975. :D

Different games we watched then. Both times we should have been well clear by half-time, we handed the initiative to our opponents by sitting back on it IMO.

Depends on which way you watch it I suppose :P

Hibs scored just before half time against the run of play and came out with more confidence in the 2nd half and went on to win the game.

Aberdeen scored against the run of play and held out for a point.

In neither game did we really sit back IMO ...

I think Brown has already revealed his outlook in the post-match comments yesterday about us possibly being more suited to playing away from home and in a strange way that sometimes manifests itself in how we play at home too.

It may be he thinks its a gamble worth taking that we are more likely to score if the opposition have committed men forward than trying to break down packed defences a la Aberdeen last week. Could be he's trying to take one step back to take two steps forward with how he approaches home games, or at least in segments of home games.

I read it, rightly or wrongly, that he's fairly confident about us defensively and isn't overly fussed about inviting pressure on the defence in the knowledge that we do on occasion have the potential to break at speed.

I send the old man text updates and even going back to the European games, never mind the SPL games, I remember texting him at both the Breidablik and Aalesund games that we seemed to be set up to inviting pressure on us and playing on the break.

I think it certainly has a place in our armoury, but its a risky strategy and there's a time and a place for it.

Agree we've been guilty of sitting back at home in the past, just dont think it applies so much this season, apart from maybe the Celtic game. Away to Killie we definately sat back in the second half and were a bit fortunate to win the game.

As long as we get into Europe again ICGAF!!! :woop:

Away games are obviously quite different, issue taken is with sitting back at home when in a winning position. Failure to capitalise has cost us twice (I also think Shellic were there for the taking as it happens had we been a bit more adventurous but Old Firm games are a bit different from normal league matches) and had us hanging on against Aalesund when we should have been out of sight. Invite teams onto you and you invite trouble, costing needless points thrown away.

The old - as long as we get the points / qualify for europe / dont lose argument doesn't stack up really.

1) We won't achieve as much as we think if we continue to only perform away from home and 2) Supporting 'well at home will become a very lonely pastime.

Say whatever you like - if the fitba continues to be pish folk will vote with their feet.

The home form is something that the players and management are now at least acknowledging - so maybe we'll try something a bit different in weeks to come.

maybe we'll even have a bash at some "tippy-tappy pish" ;)
